Soy Isoflavones

Dearest: My guest tonight is Aaron Tabor, M.D., Medical Director of Physicians Pharmaceuticals, a group of mainstream medical doctors trained at top health institutes, such as Johns Hopkins. Dr. Tabor directed the team of physicians that developed Revival Soy Protein, a patented manufacturing process that allows a single small serving of Revival to naturally contain the same amount of plant estrogens found in a pound of tofu. Revival delivers the benefits of soy without the usual bulk or bad taste. Physicians Laboratories conducts human clinical studies using Revival Soy Protein at premier medical institutes. Studies include the effects of soy isoflavones on breast, endometrial and prostate cancer. Revival is now recommended by more doctors than any other brand of soy and holds 12 patents and counting. Dr. Tabor believes that patients have the right to learn about nutritional management therapies from their physician or other health care providers, not the college kid at the health food store. Physicians Laboratories is dedicated to making soy an accepted mainstream nutritional option. Revival has quickly become the #1 Doctor-recommended soy protein. This is the *longest* time we've gone between chats, Dr. Tabor. It's wonderful to welcome you back -- especially after last week's technical problems! Dr. Aaron Tabor: Thanks Dearest. Good to be back! Dearest: Good to have you back. Let me start off with a question (as usual) :) In the nearly six years that I've personally been using Revival Soy protein and recommending it to other women in various stages of menopause, I've been so thrilled to hear so many women amazed at how much better they feel once they've started using Revival. Can you begin by providing as simple a primer as possible to explain how Revival soy protein works to ease and/or eliminate many of the symptoms of menopause? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Scientists became interested in soy for menopause when they discovered that Japanese women have very few menopausal complaints compared to Western women. About 14 clinical trials have now shown that soy protein and soy isoflavones reduce symptoms of menopause. Many doctors believe it is because of the natural phytonutrients called "isoflavones" found in soy that account for soy's many health benefits. Dearest: Dr. Tabor, can you share with us any new news, I.e., new studies on the effect of soy isoflavones on menopause and achieving optimal health in general? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Hundreds of new soy studies are published every year! Many new exciting studies have recently been published in areas of menopausal health, bone health, heart health and weight loss. The research data is very compelling that soy helps you feel fuller longer, and with in-between meal and late night snacking a primary reason for dietary plan failure, this is an important benefit. Of course, soy shouldn't be used to prevent or cure disease, but can be a very healthy nutritional component to your overall health plan. We encourage all of our customers to work with their physician and dietitian to get the most health benefits from Revival Soy. Weezie: How long before you see effects from the product? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Thanks Weezie. Most women notice a difference in how they feel within a few days to a few weeks. For menopause, my mother noticed a very big difference in just a few days, but other women may need several weeks to start seeing a difference. One area that many women point out is a big increase in energy. Soy is a low-glycemic, low-carb protein that is rich in amino acids that are good for energy. For heart and bone health, regular daily use for many months is suggested. Stel32452: I take Estrace and prometrium for irregular bleeding. Can I still take Revival Soy or will that be too much estrogen in my body? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Soy protein does not contain "estrogens" -- the term "plant estrogen" is a misnomer -- we call them isoflavones. Enjoying soy will not increase your estrogen levels, but in fact, many studies show that regular daily soy consumption will balance your estrogen levels to a more healthy level. Of course, with any dietary supplement, you should discuss mixing with prescription medications with your own doctor. Eve: I am a 3 year breast cancer survivor. Will this product increase any chances of recurrence? Or is there data that it might prevent it? I also had ovaries removed, so I truly need help with my symptoms! I am on Femara. Dr. Aaron Tabor: Thank you for this question. A recent review by a large soy manufacturer has led them to file for a FDA-claim that soy would reduce the risk of certain cancers. However, we do not claim that Revival Soy cures or prevents cancer, and would not advise anyone to rely on dietary supplements for this reason. There is data to indicate that soy may support healthy breast tissues by lowering circulating estrogen levels and shifting your body's metabolism to produce less unhealthy estrogen metabolites. Interestingly, the latest government data from the WHI (Women's Health Initiative study), found that estrogen does NOT increase risk of breast cancer. An increased risk of breast cancer is only seen when estrogen is used in combination with progestin. I would recommend that you speak to your own doctor about these questions to see how soy can fit into your overall plan. Dearest: Progestin being the synthetic form of progesterone. Di41798: I have completely lost all of my sex drive, everything is dried up and I feel nothing. I have been to the doctor for HRT and it made me very mean. And now it hurts to have sex, even with lubrication, and I never have an orgasm anymore. Very frustrating. I have not had a period in over a year and a half, so I'm in menopause. Will Revival help me with this? My doctor put me on Paxil CR, which decreases my sex drive too, but I have horrible panic attacks sometimes. Been to counselors too. Will Revival help me with any of this? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Soy can be a good part of your midlife plan. The vaginal dryness is likely due to declining levels of estrogen. Estrogen is important for stimulating connective tissues. A recent study on a soy-rich diet suggested that soy may support healthier vaginal tissues, although such a possible effect would take 6 months or more of daily soy use to start supporting better vaginal health. I'm sorry that you are having such a miserable time. Dearest: There's also a helpful article on Power Surge at www.power-surge.com/educate/sexuality.htm to give you some additional suggestions. Precious: Articles that I have read mentioned that the Japanese soy is fermented. Taking an abundance of this soy hasn't been used long enough for health results to be tabulated sufficiently. Dr. Aaron Tabor: Nearly 100% of the controlled clinical studies documenting the health benefits of soy have been done with unfermented soy protein powders (isolates and concentrates) like found in Revival Soy products. There are very few clinical trials using fermented soy products. The FDA's official heart health claim for soy was based primarily on unfermented soy studies. With Revival Soy, you can actually enjoy the flavor, which is important for long-term daily consumption. Dearest: What are "free" and "bound" forms of soy isoflavones? Sounds like something sadomasochistic. Dr. Aaron Tabor: Natural soy products contain beneficial phytonutrients called "isoflavones" that are "bound" when you first eat them, but digestive process in your digestive tract "free" the isoflavones so they can be absorbed by the body. Research is going on right now to see if pre-digesting the isoflavones is beneficial to absorption. GoBo: I am 44 and believe I am starting the pre-menopause, my periods are very heavy and would like to know if soy will help the moods and my periods? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Perimenopause can start in a woman's late 30's or early 40's -- as estrogen levels begin to decline, periods become erratic and you can start to experience symptoms of menopause. Women in this perimenopause can benefit by adding soy to their diet too. It is really never too early to start benefiting from soy. Dearest: Dr. T., is it my imagination, or is there a new product for menopause on the market every week? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Yes, there are 'thousands' haha, but the great thing about soy is that is has been used safely for many thousands of years, and with Revival's patented, natural concentration, just 1 Revival shake or bar contains the amount of soy isoflavones found in 6 cups of a typical soymilk. We have many other patents for soy products that we may develop in the future, with some clinical trials for them underway now. Marlo: If you drink Revival, which is 500 milligrams of calcium and a calcium pill with vitamin D 600 milligrams, and a container of yogurt, is this an efficient amount for the day? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Most people recommend that a woman consume 1000 to 1500 milligrams of calcium per day. You would have to consult your own doctor though to determine the exact amount that you need, but that is approximately the amount needed. Dearest: Power Surge has recommended 1,250 mg. for perimenopausal women and 1500 mg. for postmenopausal women. That's pretty close, Dr. T. Weezie: Can you use it with HT or do you stop the HT or wean off it while increasing the soy? Had the hot flashes come back with a different type of HRT and don't want THAT again! Dr. Aaron Tabor: You would have to consult your own doctor about discontinuing a prescription medication, but there is no reason we know of that you can't use soy along with HRT as part of your nutritional component. Dearest: There's an excellent article about weaning off HRT (even while starting Revival Soy protein) at www.power-surge.com/educate/weanoffhrt.htm Stel32452: Would my husband benefit from using Revival soy? Or is it strictly for women? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Men have a lot of potential benefits from using soy. I start my day each morning with a Revival shake or bar. Heart disease is the number 1 killer of men and women. Soy can help lower cholesterol as part of a health diet, boost energy, and long-term use may support healthier prostate tissues. A recent medical review found that soy does not harm fertility for men or women. Renee47: Is Revival Soy safe for folks with Celiac disease? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Most of our products are gluten-free, thus can be enjoyed by people with Celiac's disease. You can find out which products are gluten-free (including all of our shakes) at www.revivalsoywomen.com Dearest: Dr. Tabor, why did you choose not to sell Revival in health food stores or such? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Good question -- we can provide a better value by eliminating the middlemen. Also, we value our relationship with our customers. One example: we provide a free newsletter every 2 months to keep our customers updated on the latest soy research. By shipping directly to customers, we also ensure the product is fresh. Finally, with so many doctors and dietitians recommending Revival, it gives them control over what their patients learn. Aw: Will Revival Soy help you to sleep at night? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Several studies indicate that soy helps with menopause-related sleeplessness. When you are having hot flashes at night (night sweats), it is difficult to sleep, so by soy helping reduce hot flashes, many women see a good improvement. OBXHarleyChick: What is the best way to slowing add soy to your diet? can you "overload" too quickly? I am only 30 and in surgical menopause and am wondering how to add it to my diet? Dr. Aaron Tabor: The key with soy is eating enough on a daily basis to see real benefits. A recent panel of international soy experts recommended 160 milligrams of soy isoflavones per day for the full potential benefits of soy. The second challenge is to find a soy product you can enjoy because you need to consume it every day. Revival Soy solves both of these issues. Just 1 Revival bar or shake, because of our patented natural concentration process, allows you to get the amount of soy isoflavones (160 milligrams) found in 6 cups of regular soymilk. And, as Dearest can tell you, our taste is the best on the market. Dearest: Very true, Dr. T. I tried enough soy shakes before finding Revival to know. Mindis2596: I know Revival is good for cholesterol - does is lower LDL or raise HDL or both? and triglycerides? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Recent studies show that soy protein lower LDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides, while slightly increasing the good HDL cholesterol. This is very good news. Soy may also act via other means to support the cardiovascular system such as preventing "oxidation" of bad LDL cholesterol, a process that makes bad LDL cholesterol even more "sticky" to your arteries. This may be important for diabetic health, as high blood sugar levels cause oxidation of LDL cholesterol, leading to premature heart disease. Weezie: Is it possible to take in too much soy, if so, how much is too much and what would be the possible ill effects? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Asians have consumed soy-rich diets for thousands of years without adverse effects. Several recent human toxicity studies have found no effects either. We are not aware of an upper limit that has been established on soy consumption, and the FDA has not issued any warnings. We feel it is important with any dietary supplement to always be under the regular care of your own doctor. Dearest: What are the commonest allergic reactions to soy? And what percentage of women are actually allergic to soy products? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Soy is much less allergenic than cow's milk. The latest data suggest that only 1 out of 3000 people are allergic to soy, which would manifest as a mild digestive upset. Adults are not thought to develop soy allergies, so most people already know if they are allergic to soy or not. Precious: How many years have Soy consumption studies been going on now? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Soy studies have been going on for decades. In fact, soy was suggested as healthy for diabetics in the early 1900's. Since soy can help you feel fuller longer (as well as being low-carb and low-glycemic index), it can help with weight loss (beneficial for Type 2 diabetics). Dearest: I hope this question isn't convoluted...It's interesting to me when I read some anti-soy article - even the nay-sayers, in the final analysis, say the overwhelming majority of data favor soy. Your thoughts? Dr. Aaron Tabor: The overwhelming majority of soy studies show that soy is a great part of a healthy diet. Some of the early criticisms of soy, such as thyroid health, have recently been shown to have little merit. The FDA considered criticisms of soy when approving the soy-heart health claim and didn't find evidence that soy causes any harm. Jackie: How much time is reasonable to give Revival a chance to work? How new is this product? What, if anything, is the downside to taking this? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Most women notice a change in several days to several weeks. Because Revival Soy also gives you energy from the soy protein, many women feel better right away. Revival Soy has been on the market for 6 years (April). There is no known downside to consuming soy as part of a healthy diet. Aw: I have heard Soy causes bad gas:) Anything to help with this? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Some minority of people have difficulty digesting vegetables, but Revival Soy is very low in the flatulence causing natural sugars. If you do have a problem, we have a great digestive enzyme that works well. Overall though Revival Soy is very easy to digest. Dearest: For additional information, you can call Revival's offices at their toll-free number: 1-800-700-1560 Marlo: How do you feel about the enzyme pill with the soy? I eat papaya which is an enzyme. Do you yourself take it? Dr. Aaron Tabor: I don't have any problems digesting soy or vegetables, so I don't take the enzymes. The enzymes that we have are specific for breaking down the natural soy sugars (called raffinose and stachyose). Marlo: So would the papaya help too? Dr. Aaron Tabor: I believe papaya helps break down protein, so it may be of some help too to ease digestion, but soy protein is easily digestible without enzymes. JolieJacq: Does soy help with perimenopausal anxiety/depression? Sorry if someone has already asked this. Dr. Aaron Tabor: Perimenopausal women can enjoy soy, but Revival Soy doesn't treat or cure disease. If your mood swings are related to hormones (i.e. perimenopause), then soy may support better health for you, but if you have clinical anxiety or depression, you need to see your doctor. Weezie: I've been recently diagnosed as hypothyroid. Does soy have any effect on thyroid medications? Dr. Aaron Tabor: The makers of Synthroid, a popular hypothyroid medication, suggest taking certain foods 4 hours apart from Synthroid. These foods include walnuts, any food with calcium and soy protein. Note that this doesn't mean that soy harms the thyroid, but that you should simply take it at a different time of day than Synthroid (as my own grandmother does). As with any dietary supplement, we recommend that you talk to your own doctor before mixing with prescription medication. PattiInSC: I have had a menopause blood test. I am 44 years old and my Gyno said I was well into menopause. I have gained 15 pounds in 8 months without a change in eating habit, eating less actually. I have been exercising every day, Pilates and yoga and riding stationary bike yet still have not lost a pound. It seems it is all cellulite on my thighs and a belly in my lower abdomen. Can you tell me a way that I can get rid of this? I also am on Xanax have been for over ten years for panic anxiety disorder. I can get rid of this? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Many women notice that during menopause it becomes harder to keep off the pounds. This could be due to estrogen loss or simply lack of energy. Soy is a great way to feel fuller longer, thus reducing hunger cravings. Revival Soy can be used to supplement your diet with more soy protein and soy isoflavones. Also, soy may give you that extra energy boost you need to work out longer. SueQ: Are soy pills as good as soy? Dr. Aaron Tabor: Soy pills don't provide all of the health benefits that soy protein plus soy isoflavones do. OBXHarleyChick: Is the 160 milligrams the recommended dosage for all women? Should I speak to my Doctor before taking? Dr. Aaron Tabor: The panel recommended 100 to 160 milligrams for soy isoflavones' full benefits -- recent medical studies have shown that higher levels do produce better benefits. This is the level my own mom and grandmother consume daily. Dearest: Dr. Tabor, thanks so much for joining us again tonight to field our questions about soy, menopause, how our health can benefit from Revival soy in general.
