(Dr. John McDougall's first visit) Dearest: My guest tonight in Power Surge's GIGS series, is the founder of The McDougall Program, a remarkable program to effect lasting health benefits. I'm pleased to welcome to Power Surge. . . . . . . D r. J o h n M c D o u g a l l ..... Physician and Author of numerous books, The McDougall Program introduced us to the remarkable twelve-day plan. Building on the idea that the traditional meat-rich American diet is hazardous to our health, Dr. McDougall developed a medically sound, low-fat, starch-based diet that not only facilitates weight loss, but also reverses serious illness, without drugs, and provides a broad range of dramatic and lasting health benefits. Step-by-step, he takes you through his revolutionary new program with a comprehensive listing of health problems from arthritis to ulcer disease, comparing the traditional, often drastic medical approach and The McDougall Program's nutritionally based alternative. Dr. John McDougall's in-patient program at St. Helena Hospital in Santa Rosa, CA, is a live-in experience that assures success with the McDougall Program. Dr. McDougall has written numerous books (with his wife, Mary McDougall). Their latest, The McDougall Quick And Easy Cookbook is a beautiful book, rich with excellent recipes for healthful living, plus a review of The McDougall Program. Dr. McDougall, in saying hello to a group of mostly women in menopause, can you please tell us why your McDougall Program, in particular, would be especially beneficial to women in menopause? Thanks and welcome to Power Surge :) Dr. John McDougall: Because women of all ages want to look and function well. When you look around the world and you find people who are trim and healthy, you find women who are living on diets of the proper proportions (for example, Asians, Japanese and Chinese). And women who follow the starch based diets do not dread menopause. Evidence of this is that there is no word for hot flash in the Japanese language. Dearest: Thank you, Dr. McDougall. MStein, please go ahead. MStein1949: Is there one specific type of food that seems to make Menopause worse? Dr. John McDougall: No...not one in particular. Osteoporosis and heart disease are do to the high fat, high protein American diet. The hot flashes are due to hormone changes caused by too much meat and too little plant food. Dearest: PFWLJ, go ahead, please :) PFWLJ: What dietary suggestions do you have for men athletes with very low iron levels. Dr. John McDougall: The anemia may be caused by the amount of exercise ..so the answer would be less exercise. Anyone with anemia should be evaluated by a Doctor. BayouClog1: Have gained a lot of weight since starting hrt, any suggestions on how to lose it? Dr. John McDougall: You go on my diet of low fat, high carbohydrates and exercise. Slinky351: Do you have to take estrogen and progesterone? I will be having a complete hysterectomy and am scared of this hrt. Dr. John McDougall: I prescribe hormones creams estridial and progesterone. Dearest: Joan, please go ahead. Joan5000: Dr., what in your program is different from low fat, salt and sugar, plus dairy? Dearest: Good question, Joan. Dr. John McDougall: We don't use any dairy Dearest: Can you tell us why dairy is omitted, Dr. McDougall? Dr. John McDougall: Because of allergy anemia autoammune diseases and infected often with microbes such as ecoli, salmonella, tuberculosis. Over 60% of the herds are infected with bovine aids virus and bovine leukemia viruses. Dearest: Scary percentages. Thanks. Crazy, go ahead. Crazykonz: What about my mood swings? I'm 42. Dr. John McDougall: Mood can be controlled by diet, exercise and sleep. Diet changes nuerotransmitters; exercise releases endorphens and too much sleep causes depression. Therefore for a better mood, eat a high carbohydrate diet exercise and get about 5- 6/12 hrs sleep a night. Dearest: Dr. McDougall, is there any particular food you might recommend that is helpful for women suffering from menopausal symptoms? Dr. John McDougall: Not healthy to look at food as a "pill". Instead consider the body healthy as supported when accompanied by good food, good exercise and healthy habits. I M Emanon: I need to know if my symptoms are indeed menopause or perhaps something else. Dearest: IMEmanon, can you be more specific. I M Emanon: Constant 97.2 body temp..severe headaches ...hot flashes 10- 12 times all day and night. Dr. John McDougall: See your Doctor. That's hard to answer online Bubbly007: I take tamoxifen for breast cancer and it makes me hungry...could anything curb my appetite? Dr. John McDougall: No...however you can answer the appetite with the right foods. You will not only stay trim, but help also slow the progression the of the breast cancer. Dearest: GM Coffey, go ahead. Blush: GM wants to know the connection between food and depression. Dr. John McDougall: The connection is high meat diets block the passage of trytophfan, an amino acid, from the blood into the brain fluids. Tryptofan is converted into seratonin which relieves depression, depresses appetite, and calms the world. Ncyg46: What do you think about estrogen replacement and how can I get my cholesterol and triglicerides down. I had bypass surgery two years ago but nothing seems to help the cholesterol. Also, I have severe claidication in my legs - makes it hard to walk or exercise. Dearest: How old are you, Ncyg? Ncyg46: 51 now Dr. John McDougall: I use HRT for women in the form of estradial and progesterone creams. I wrote a book called "The McDougall Program for healthy Heart" which will explain to you how to lower the triglycerides and cholesterol. Don't forget to avoid fruit fruit juice and sugar Dearest: Interesting, Dr. McDougall.. seeing as how we're generally encouraged to EAT fruit for good health. Ncyg46: I have all your books. Are the fruits really bad? I love them!!!! Dr. John McDougall: Fruits are healthy for most people but not for those with a tendency toward high trigylcerides . The fructose is converted into triglycerides Dearest: So, that would go for most sweets? Don't sweets / sugars raise triglyceride levels? Dr. John McDougall: Yes for some people Ncyg46: I eat mostly brown rice with veggies. I still can't get past 145. Started out at 180. Dr. John McDougall: Exercise will lower...145 is excellent. Stop complaining!! BChilltop: Will this eating program actually eliminate the plaque build-up in the arteries? I am 50. Dr. John McDougall: Yes, reverses the heart disease. Dearest: Fantastic Suzyque001: How does the starch diet affect diabetics? Dr. John McDougall: The University of KY reports that 75% of adult diabetics get off all insulin and nearly 100% get off the pills with a high starch diet. Suzyque001: thank you NR915: Any good news regarding multiple sclerosis medications? Dr. John McDougall: Yes, for the last 45 years Roy Swank MD from the Univ. Oregon has reported that a low fat diet will stop the progression of MS. All drugs fail to stop the progression of this disease, which results in half the people being dead or disabled within 10 years. Z J Gragg: If meat is the problem, why do mostly vegetarians have menopause problems? (like Dearest?) Dr. John McDougall: Vegetarian means many things. Some live on cokes and potato chips and others live on eggs and cheese. Dr. John McDougall: People who live on a starch based diet have little problem with meno and are in greater health. There is a new book called the "Mc Dougall Quick and Easy Cookbook" in stores. Dearest: Dr. McDougall, can you give us an example of a day on your program? What would be an example of breakfast...lunch...and dinner. Dr. John McDougall: I eat hash browns with tomato relish and oatmeal for breakfast. Dearest: Mmmm.... hash browns? Dr. John McDougall: Dr McDougall's soups with vegetable sandwiches for lunch. Bean burritos, spaghetti, soups, stews and chilies for dinner. Dearest: I think you eat more than most of us do.. and lots better, too :) Dr. John McDougall: We have 1800 recipes in 9 best-selling books. Dearest: Wonderful... thanks so much :) My oldest brother lost 50 pounds on your program. Dr. John McDougall: Congratulations to him! And it will be forever because he did not do anything strange or difficult like taking dangerous pills. L7847M: What suggestions do you have for overcoming cravings for sweets while on the McDougall Plan? Dr. John McDougall: We naturally crave sweets. Remember the taste buds on the tips of the tongue. Answer that craving with starches, vegetables and fruits. L7847M: I have and still crave sweets. Dearest: What do you recommend as a treat when we have such cravings? Dr. John McDougall: On my birthday I have a chocolate cake...but you can't have a birthday everyday. MsLizzieB: Dr. McD, how similar (or different) is your diet to the macrobiotic diet? Thanks. (And my birthday was yesterday and I did Not have chocolate cake!! (sigh!)) Dr. John McDougall: Very similar - and also like Pritikin, Cornish and ascribed in the first chapter of Daniel in the Bible. Wingy54: Would organic dairy products be as unsafe as nonorganic dairy products? Dr. John McDougall: Organic would still cause allergy and auto immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and childhood diabetes, and the fat will still give you heart disease obesity and cancer. But there may be less of an infection and chemical contamination problem. BayouClog1: If you don't have dairy what about osteoporosis?. Dr. John McDougall: World wide people with the strongest bones Chinese, African etc consume the least amount of calcium and vice versa. Animal proteins are the main cause of osteoporesis. Animal proteins are acidic and cause the bones to dissolve and change the kidney physiology so the bone material is urinated into the toilet. Dearest: What's the greatest source of calcium on The McDougall Program? Dr. John McDougall: Since there has never been a case of dietary calcium deficiency, don't worry about it. Slinky351: What diet do you recommend then for woman heading in the change direction? I am confused here. Dearest: His own program, Slinky, The McDougall Program! Dr. John McDougall: People may be confused, but much of the confusion can be solved by looking at the world picture. People living on high starch diets are trim and avoid common diseases. When Asians and Africans move to the US they get fat and sick because of the change to the higher fat and higher protein, low carbohydrate diets. RGVY: How can Starches be good for you, don't they turn to SUGAR in the body? Dr. John McDougall: You must look at the world picture and basic understanding of human physiology that cells burn sugars preferentially. Blush: I'm on Zoloft, a seratonin booster, my appetite has changed and I don't eat meat anymore. Is this normal? Dr. John McDougall: It may be the brain cells on Zoloft. Really can't say. Z J Gragg: My brother is 53, diabetic since 18, was on high protein diet 'till heart prob.- now mostly beans. Is this ok? Dr. John McDougall: Too many beans can cause too much protein. Better choices would be potatoes rice etc... See my books !! GFanton379: Do a significant number of people tell you that they have a hard time maintaining their weight while on your program ? Dr. John McDougall: No. Do you mean they lose too much weight?? GFanton379: yes Dr. John McDougall: This does happen and I tell them to eat more breads, bagels and pastas - or dried fruits - and sometimes to add nuts and seeds, avocados. MEH99206: I have heard that atrial fib is caused by sudden drop in blood sugar from to many carbs. Comment please. Dr. John McDougall: No, atrial fib is caused by atherosclerosis (high fat diet). Erica: What do you suggest for people who want to get more calcium while on your program? Dr. John McDougall: It is almost never necessary. They can take calcium pills, but milk is too dangerous. Dearest: You can order Dr. McDougall's books directly from 800-570-1654 Dr. John McDougall: You can also order my food products at 800-367-3844. They can also be found at major chains and health food stores. MsLizzieB: How can you be sure trim people in other countries are so only because of diet? What about exercise, stress, genetic type, etc. Dr. John McDougall: My 20 years of experience of putting people on the high starch diet confirms the observations. BChilltop: Dr.McDougall-your new cookbook will bring such nice changes to our eating plans, thank you! Dearest: Yes, thank you, indeed :) The newest book is wonderful.
