Nature's Own Antidote"

(Julia Elliott's 3rd visit to Power Surge) Dearest: Julia Elliott is the author of three books about the benefits of soy, especially for women in menopause: "Beating Menopause & Early Ovarian Failure With The Help Of 1 Natural Ingredient," "With A Little Help From The Soybean," and her newest, "Simply Soy: Nature's Own Antidote". Julia holds workshops and soy sessions to pass this important information on to other people who are not happy with the cancer-causing preparations they are offered at menopause. Julia began using soy as an alternative to Premarin. Julia has appeared on numerous radio and TV shows, speaks at hospitals, local colleges and senior citizen events. It was Power Surge that gave Julia the nickname, "Soy Source." She is also a professional writer and is on the Editorial staff of News-line Publications, a Medical Professionals magazine. Julia has occasionally been met with disapproval from those skeptics who believe soy products are not worthy of consideration, but that hasn't stopped her from forging ahead to spread her knowledge about the benefits of soy. Julia, it's a pleasure to have you back in Power Surge :) Julia Elliott: Thank you Dearest, it is a pleasure to be here, It is always nice to come back home:) Dearest: What are your thoughts regarding the halting of the WHI, Women's Health Initiative, Study because the "risks" outweighed the "benefits" (they used to say the opposite) of hormone replacement therapy? Julia Elliott: Dearest, I think they halted the tests because they found inconsistencies. They found that more women were having problems with the HRT issues. Dearest: Do you think it has resulted in people looking more favorably on alternative methods like soy? Julia Elliott: Yes Dearest, I do believe that is so true, they want an alternative. Nat: Julia, I feel processed soy is not as effective How may I obtain unprocessed soy? Thank you. Julia Elliott: Nat, you can obtain unprocessed soy by growing your own soybeans, or going to your local healthfood store and purchasing them right out the bin, I have done that and started my own crop. Gail: Hi Julia, What is you opinion of the Revival Soy formula? Julia Elliott: Revival Soy protein has been known to help some women, so I say, if it works, use it. SuperGrammieJean: Do you think the high isoflavones in Revival soy can have any long term negative effects? Julia Elliott: SuperGrammieJean, I do not know of any long term testing, but again, if it is working for you, use it. KWFlora: Can you take too much soy? Dearest: Boy, I wish women were as concerned for years about taking HRT as they're worried about using too much soy. Julia Elliott: KW, yes I do believe you can consume too much soy, it is a good idea to check with your doctor. When you first start a regimen of soy he or she can take baseline studies. KWFlora: Thank You. Dearest: Julia, what concerns would there be about taking too much soy, a natural food supplement? Julia Elliott: The toxicity is the main concern, a good choice would be to get baseline studies, and have them checked every six months. Jean: what would you consider a recommended amount of soy isoflavones 47 mg is good for me, Revival has so much more. Is it an individual number? Personally if I take too much soy, I don't feel good. Thanks Dearest: What do you feel when you take too much soy? Gas? Bloating? Jean: I feel unbalanced, and unhealthy in contrast to feeling great with the 47 mg I get in the Soy Dream. Dearest: Unbalanced how? Jean: Symptom free. Julia Elliott: Dearest, you can feel all of that plus headaches and nausea. There are so many side effects when too much soy is ingested. It is natural but it is powerful. Jean: No fog thinking, fatigue Julia Elliott: Yes, sluggish. Jean: No panic attacks Dearest: I was just wondering what she meant by feeling unbalanced when she used too much soy. I suppose every woman who uses soy has to determine how much she can comfortably use. Julia Elliott: Soy is a powerful food. It has to be respected as a high quality form of food for medicine. MaryO: You can grow soybeans from the ones in the health food store?? I usually just make chili out of them. I didn't know that I could grow my own using those. Do you just plant them in the ground or start them in water first? (Oh, yeah...I'm one of those that RevivalSoy helps - 4.5 years now!) Julia Elliott: That is right MaryO, you can use the soybeans right out of the bin to start your own crop. Grow them as you would green beans, really easy. Nat: Do you feel genetic altered soy is found in processed soy? Thanks Julia Elliott: Nat, I do not like the sounds of genetic altered soy, I believe in the original way. Nat: do you think it is processed soy? Julia Elliott: The genetically altered foods leave a lot to be desired. Stick to the original, that is where the whole power is. Dearest: Lots of soy products use genetically modified/engineered soy. Of course, natural soybeans, such as Julia uses don't and neither does Revival soy modify the soybeans in their products. Julia Elliott: Right Dearest, and that is what we want to steer clear of, we do not know what they have removed or modified when they do this. Dearest: Exactly, and, unfortunately, the majority of products on the market today, soy shakes, soy burgers, etc.. all come from genetically engineered soybeans. Revival DOES NOT. Trish: My question was asked.....I wanted to know how much mg of soy is required daily? I read somewhere that over 100 mg is too much. Is this so? Julia Elliott: True and so true of the soybeans you yourself can grow, even on a patio garden. Dearest: Well, of course, that's the most natural way :) Julia Elliott: Trish, I have understood that anything over 100 is too much, but again, doctors have to test your TOTAL estrogen frequently to determine how much will work for you. Dearest: Julia, isn't it true that using soy doesn't elevate your estrogen levels? Julia Elliott: Dearest, soy will only elevate your estrogen levels if you need it. If you have enough estrogen circulating throughout your system, then it will not turn to estrogen. Dearest: Can you elaborate? I have always understood that soy doesn't change your estrogen levels even though it has estrogenic effects on the body. Julia Elliott: Only if your body calls for it. That is the beauty of it. Dearest, you are so right, it is a natural food that will only turn to estrogen if your body requires it, according to James Anderson University Kentucky. Dearest: So, you are saying that using soy can raise your estrogen levels? Julia Elliott: Dearest, if your body needs estrogen, yes, soy has been known to raise that level according to your needs. Dearest: Thanks, Julia. Again, that isn't my understanding, but I will certainly look into it :) IreneCrites: What amount of soy do you suggest a post menopausal woman should consume on a daily basis? I have been using Revival daily for 18 months and find it very effective for my symptoms. Julia Elliott: Irene, I would have my doctor check my total estrogen and see what amount is circulating, and adjust as per need. SuperGrammieJean: How do you use soy beans to cook with? I am a Revival soy user too. Julia Elliott: Super, check out the book, "With a Little Help From The Soybean," you can email me at JElliotSoy@aol.com for a discount price or go to amazon and check it out there. Dearest: Her E.mail is JElliotSoy@aol.com MaryO: I just wanted to add that I use Revival, and eat tofu and/or drink other soy milk, Boca Burgers and other soy products. I've eaten tofu nearly daily since college (a zillion years ago). I don't have any side effects or anything - could I have built up a tolerance or is my body "soy friendly"? Maybe others could build up to it slowly, too. Julia Elliott: MaryO, your body sounds soy friendly to me, but, again I would check with my doctor to see how much of this is turning into estrogen that you need. that is TOTAL estrogen, a test you have to request. MaryO: I think I have every test known to woman already :) Julia Elliott: LOL MaryO, but have the total estrogen taken anyway. MaryO: ok, will do :) Dearest: Julia, just out of curiosity, how low can estrogen levels go in post-menopausal women? Julia Elliott: Dearest, I am not sure of the exact account, but a meno woman can go very low, and that is what causes the symptoms. The addition of hormones or soy can elevate these numbers and the symptoms can go away but as we get older and further through meno, the amount required is lessened. Jean: How can the doctor know how much soy you need by testing your estrogen level? Most doctors are not nutrition and health oriented. Thanks. Julia Elliott: Jean, ask to have the TOTAL estrogen test taken. This will tell you and them how much estrogen is currently circulating throughout your body presently and he/she can adjust your intake of soy or hormones accordingly. Jean: Total estrogen test, the doctor will know about this? Julia Elliott: Jean, yes, he/she should. If not, inform him or her. Minou: My husband makes soy smoothies every morning and has been doing this for years. How does soy effect the prostate? We've heard varying views on this? Julia Elliott: Minou, he is protecting his prostate health, kidney health and even bone health, encourage him to continue. Dearest: And heart health, too! :) Julia Elliott: Yes Dearest, I forgot that part thanks for reminding me! MrsSLG: Does Soy affect absorption of Thyroid medication for Hypothyroidism? I have used Revival Shake and Bar daily for over 1 year. At first I lost some weight, now struggling to keep weight down with no other lifestyle changes. I separate Soy intake 4 hrs. from taking thyroid medications. Thanks! Julia Elliott: Mrs, I would check with my doctor on that. I am not a medical person, so I cannot comment on that, but get to the doctor with that question, OK? Dearest: MrsSLG, you will find information about soy and thyroid in the archived answers of Dr. Aaron Tabor. Here's one that should answer your concerns about soy and thyroid. Trish: I am postmenopausal. I had stopped having hot flashes, but started taking soy again, and noticed that the hot flashes started. Could this be from the soy? Julia Elliott: Trish, I would go to the doctor and have my hormone levels tested and tell him or her of your experience. If you are taking too much soy the test will indicate as such. Dearest: Trish, are the hot flashes regular or just occasionally? Trish: Regular basis, 2 or 3 times a day Dearest: Because you do know that it's not uncommon whether you're using soy or not for hot flashes to return even after you've been without them for some time. I would still get myself checked by my healthcare practitioner. Julia Elliott: Trish, back up on the soy intake for a while, see what happens. Dearest: I had the same experience but the hot flashes stopped. MaryO: Does your current book contain more recipes for soy? I always like new ones. :) Julia Elliott: MaryO, it sure does! You have to take a look, and being here to tonight qualifies your for a discount and an autographed copy, just email me at jelliotsoy2aol.com and you will get a $3 discount off the list price for your association with Power-Surge.com. Dearest: For anyone interested in purchasing Simply Soy, Julia is offering a discount for Power Surge members. If you're interested, E.mail Julia at JelliotSoy@aol.com. That's very nice of you, Julia :) SuperGrammieJean: So what is a good level of estrogen a woman should have? And can I take soy the rest of my life if I don't need it for the estrogen? Julia Elliott: Super, check with your doctor to see what level you need for your particular time of life. The need is reduced through time, I know this for a fact. Dearest: I agree with Julia. I'm postmenopausal and find I need less soy now because my symptoms have lessened. PatC: Do you know if there a test a man can take to determine the appropriate levels of soy? Julia Elliott: Yes Dearest, it happens that way. Pat, if you are consuming soy, the tests should reflect the levels in estrogen, increase it and the level goes up, and vice versa. PatC: Thanks (I'm asking for my spouse - I am a woman) Julia Elliott: OK Pat, that works too. Dearest: Sure, men can have their estrogen levels checked, too. But let's hope your hubby doesn't have estrogen levels that are too, too, high, or he may want to share your clothing! Julia, for those who don't know, can you explain what phytoestrogens are and how they work? Thanks. Julia Elliott: Right, Dearest, only they have to have the male estrogen tested in this case, if that wanes, meno sets in for them too. Phytoestrogens are the plan estrogens that are found in plants and are a weak form of estrogen. When combined with a healthy diet of limited red meat and dairy, they may help you achieve the needed hormone balance that your body seeks as you grow older. That and exercise will help maintain that balance, and of course yearly physicals. Trish: Does soy also helps with libido? Julia Elliott: Trish, it sure does! Dearest: And vaginal dryness, depression, fatigue and so many menopausal symptoms. Julia Elliott: If your hormones are up to par your lubrication is also and therefore your other "needs" are eminent. The soy in your system keeps you as you were pre-meno. MaryO: I just want to say, that I like really soy in various forms (including the Revival, tofu, Boca Burgers, soy milk and yogurt) and I can't see me ever giving any of it up, no matter what :) Dearest: Same here. MaryO: It's just a part of my life. Julia Elliott: MaryO, that is probably what is keeping you going so well after all of these years at Power Surge ! :) MaryO: True, Julia! Slim: Does soy protect you from cancer? Julia Elliott: Slim, the genistein in soy is a cancer protect of sorts. There is a host of cancers that it protects you from. Most are hormone dependent, such as breast cancer etc. DebbieMGreen: Does Revival help with anxiety? Julia Elliott: Debbie, if you are sugar sensitive, I would try the sugar free form. Trish: Is soy good for younger people also. My daughter who has premenstrual cramps also takes soy occasionally. Julia Elliott: Trish, check with your doctor before you out your daughter on soy. Dearest: And after you check with your doctor, many of whom don't know much about soy, soy is excellent for PMS. Julia Elliott: Better be guided when they are young, Trish. Dearest: I'd just give her less than you'd take. Julia Elliott: Yes, Dearest, it is a proven fact it is a help. A gradual introduction would be a good idea. IreneCrites: My doctor was very happy that I had chosen to use soy and was especially impressed with Revival. Julia Elliott: I am so glad to hear that Irene, more and more doctors are understanding this concept. Dearest: Julia, thanks for visiting with us tonight and providing so much information about soy and menopause. I recommend Julia Elliott's newest book, "Simply Soy: Nature's Own Antidote."
