(Ann Louise Gittelman's first visit to Power Surge) Dearest: It is with great pleasure that I introduce you to tonight's Power Surge guest, one of the country's foremost nutritionists, best-selling author, lecturer, women's health advocate and former Nutritional Director of the Pritikin Longevity Center in California . . . ANN LOUISE GITTLEMAN Ann Louise's background is in both traditional and holistic health. She is a highly regarded consultant and has appeared on nationwide TV and radio. The recipient of numerous awards for her expertise and communcative savvy, Ann Louise has been interviewed by numerous national newspapers and magazines. Among her best selling books are: "Super Nutrition For Menopause" and "Your body Knows Best," plus her latest books, " Get The Sugar Out: 501 Simple Ways To Cut The Sugar In Any Diet," and "Get The Salt Out:501 Ways To Cut The Salt Out Of Any Diet," (Note: Be sure to check Power Surge's Bookstore for newer books by the same author). Dearest: Ann Louise, a very warm welcome to Power Surge. In your opening remarks, I wonder if you would address the fact that although we should always be concerned about our health and good nutrition, women seem to become even more interested during menopause. What is your experience with this phenomenon? Thanks :) Ann Louise Gittleman: You are right During the menopausal change, you have to keep track of everything because what you used to get away with nutrtionally and otherwise comes back to roost. Dearest: Great, Ann Louise.. is it okay if we call you Ann Louise? :) Ann Louise Gittleman: Yes MissR30: What recommendations do you have for bloat and weight gain during menopause? Thanks Ann Louise Gittleman: First of all make sure you are not eating a lot of sugar which includes lots of fruit juices and simple carbos from white flour like bagels and muffins. The other nutrients which are essential include more B6 and magnesium. Dearest: Ann Louise, isn't B-6 a natural diuretic? Ann Louise Gittleman: Yes. And most women do well with at least 50 - 200 mgs Dearest: Wonderful, thanks, Ann Louise... Hmcgill, please go ahead :) HMcgill: I'm 60 and wonder why I still have hot flashes. I've used HRT,but stopped prefer the holististic methods Ann Louise Gittleman: You might want to try naturally micronized estrogen which you can get via a doc's prescription through Health Pharmacies number is 800-373-6704 Dearest: Mardi, go ahead. Mardi44: Are there any seasonings that we should be careful about other than salt? Ann Louise Gittleman: Yes, all the hot ones like chilis, curries, and the like. Believe it or not hot and spicey foods make for lots of water retention. Dearest: Ann Louise, thank you. I have nothing left to eat :( Ann Louise Gittleman: Oh yes you do. Think about all the veggies, nuts (yes nuts) and seeds and wholesome proteins you can indulge in. Dearest: Thanks so much, Ann Louise.... WRasmus, please go ahead :) WRasmus306: With all the talk about supplements, what about things like colloidal minerals and the like? Ann Louise Gittleman: Good question. Minerals are absolutely important but they don't need to be colloidal. The most important minerals for THE CHANGE or THE PAUSE are magnesium, calcium, zinc, and boron. Dearest: How do zinc and boron affect women in menopause? Ann Louise Gittleman: These minerals help to stabilize blood sugar, and blood sugar that is out of control can lead to hot flashes. The boron is good for bones. Dearest: Thanks, Ann Louise... PFWLJ, please go ahead :) PFWLJ: What's the correlation between caffeine and fibrocystic breast tissue? Ann Louise Gittleman: I believe that there is a connection between the two, according to some research study, so do not drink more than two cups of coffee a day. Also consider some Vitamin E, which has been known to help fibrocystic breasts the best. PFWLJ: How much vitamin E? Ann Louise Gittleman: The amount of E is individual, but if you have no problem with high blood pressure than I suggest at least 800IUs CescaSF: How do we get enough calcium without getting constipation as well? Ann Louise Gittleman: Oh my. I suggest that you balance your calcium with magnesium, with is a fantastically effective natural laxative. BColl38000: Hair falling out, Dr. prescribed vitamins to build up hormones, will this work? Ann Louise Gittleman: Hair that is falling out is a sign of low progesterone. May I suggest a natural progest cream. Check with the Health Pharmacies for their naturally micronized progesterone. Also, are you eating enough protein and are you eating too much sugar? SUGAR makes the hair fall out with certain individuals. Lacewing28: Would diuretic B6 deplete potassium? Ann Louise Gittleman: Maybe. And so just in case, make sure you are eating enough potassium rich veggies and fruits including lots of tomatoes which are a fantastic source of potassium. I also like squash as a K source. Mheenie: I am 43, have been going thru meno since I was 39. I have hisiocytosis and diabetes insipidus - on too many meds but have hot flashes and still a period once a year.... what can I do? Ann Louise Gittleman: First off, let's talk about your diet what are you eating? Mheenie: Fish, vegetables, fruit and a lot of water. Sometimes red meat, fake eggs. Ann Louise Gittleman: Is your blood sugar controlled and are you taking some extra chromium and zinc? Mheenie: Diabetets insipidus is not regualr diabetes it is a pituitary problem, I dehydrate. Ann Louise Gittleman: Then, you may also be a candidate for natural hormone replacement Mheenie: I have to take replacement hormones for the missing antidiuretic. Dearest: Mheenie, if you wish to discuss this further, please feel free to email Ann Louise Gittleman :) BOOST23: Should middle aged women be taking ginseng? Ann Louise Gittleman: If you have a problem with energy, it may be OK Dearest: Ann Louise, can't ginseng cause blood pressure to rise in some people? Ann Louise Gittleman: Yes. It can, therefore, you need to make sure you are on the lower side of the blood pressure fence for ginseng or any other adrenal/energy booster. Dearest: Thanks, Ann Louise.... HMcgill, please ask your question now :) HMcgill: 60 yrs. old, been on proges creme and still have hot flashes every day, also use primrose oil. Ann Louise Gittleman: You may need some natural micronized estrogen. HMcgill: What is that? Ann Louise Gittleman: Natural micronized estrogen is derived from soybeans and does not have the side effects of the synthetics. Dearest: You can get natural micronized progesterone from our own pharmaceutical consultant, Pete Hueseman, R.Ph, R.D. Mardi, go ahead :) Mardi44: What about face breaking out, especially around the nose area? I'm menopausal. Ann Louise Gittleman: Again, hormones may be out of whack. With skin breaking out, be sure that you are off sugar, white flour, and fruit juices. Also, the natural progest creams can often help this situation. BChilltop: Is estrace a naturally micronized estrogren? I have been on it off and on since 1989. Should I ask for a different Hrt? Ann Louise Gittleman: I think it is. SHashmani: Is it okay to take vit B6 and B12 to increase metabolism? Ann Louise Gittleman: Why not? These vitamins are probably the most deficient in the American Diet. SHashmani: Should I take potasium with it? Ann Louise Gittleman: I think EVERY BODY needs more potassium. Dearest: Thanks, Ann Louise. SHasmani, go ahead. SHashmani: How much vit b6 and b12? Ann Louise Gittleman: Vitamin B6 can be anywhere from 50 to 200 mg., up to 2X ] per day. And the Bl2 from 200 mcgs three times per day. Dougmar: What can I take for severe anxiety and panic attacks? I take Xanax 3 x a day. Have Lupus. Ann Louise Gittleman: Severe anxiety and panic attacks can be treated quite effectively with more magnesium at least 800 to l000 mgs per day. As far as the Lupus is concerned... that is another matter. Please E Mail me. GinRosebud: You say if you have no problem with high blood pressure then you suggest at least 800 IU's of vitamin E. What if you do have a problem with high blood pressure? Under control, but still there? Ann Louise Gittleman: Then, just check with your Doc. Normally you can work up to 800 mgs., starting off with the 400 mgs. per day. Dearest: Thanks, Ann Louise.... okay, Bayou.. you can go now :) BayouClog1: Heard bananas are good to fight depression and help keep you calm. Any truth to this? Ann Louise Gittleman: Well, bananas are also a good source of magnesium, the menopausal women best nutritional ally. Don't overdo the fruits, though, because they can create yeast and cravings. PFWLJ: Can you suggest a multi-vitamin for women athletes in menopause? Is Centrum Silver ok? Ann Louise Gittleman: I don't like the synthetic vits I prefer the food based ones - like the Super Nutrition for Women vitamin I talk about in my books. You can order the formula. Dearest: From where, Ann Louise? Ann Louise Gittleman: From Uni Key at l -800-888-4353. This vitamin is copper free - a bonus for those of us who suffer from anxiety or panic attack problems. Dearest: Thanks, Ann Louise.. a veritable barrel of information, you are :) CescaSF: What ratio of calcium to magnesium do you recommend re constipation? Ann Louise Gittleman: I like l,000 Mg of calciuim and l,000 mg. of magnesium. But I like them taken at separate times of the day. Because researchers suggest that the two can compete for the same absorption sites. WRasmus306: Me again... wife's hair fell out 3 years ago, and partially returned,white... what about prog cream = as opposed to minoxidil , and how to use it? Ann Louise Gittleman: Progest cream. Use about l tsp of the cream rubbed into the body twice a day. Rub on the soft parts of the body - the tummy, chest, inner thighs and the like. And also make sure your wife is not eating SUGAR...because it effects both calcium and protein levels. Hair is made out of protein. Geebee2000: Are you familiar with the "blood-type diet" and if so, do you have an opinion? Ann Louise Gittleman: Yes. I have written about the blood type diet in my book "Your Body Knows Best". I do believe that O's need to eat more protein and most A blood type are needing more hydrocholoric acid, which may be the reason that there is so much osteoporosis. We are not metabolozing our calcium due to a lack of HCL. Dearest: Ann Louise.....will you remind everyone.. who is the publisher of that book.....so everyone can get a copy :) "Your Body Knows Best" Ann Louise Gittleman: Pocket Books is the publisher of the book. BeemersMom: I am cold almost all the time, recently I was even cold during an exercise class! What could be causing this? Ann Louise Gittleman: You need to get checked for iron or Bl2 and folic acid. BeemersMom: I was anemic during my pregnancy. Ann Louise Gittleman: Oh. Then there you have it. Could your doc run a serum iron and a ferritin (stored iron) test for you again? BOOST23: What are natural progesteron creams? Ann Louise Gittleman: They are creams made from wild yam which contains natrual progesterone precursors that have been actualized in the lab. One name I can recommend is the Progest brand. BOOST23: Where do you find them? Dearest: Boost, please email me for this information. Thanks. BOOST23: ok thanks Dearest: There are many articles about natural progesterone creams in the newsletters..also, Ann Louise has recommended a source......And the Power Surge menopause resource list...is up on the Web site. DMM412: What supplement(s) is good to help decrease LDL cholesterol levels? Ann Louise Gittleman: Vitamin E is the nutrient you are looking for. Remember that the LDL cholesterol is the oxidizing cholesterol and the Vitamin E will help because it is a great antioxidant. Lacewing28: Esteriol and Progesterone, Natural from ApotheCure - I have rash, I question if that is cause? Cream sounds good, but it doesn't provide estrogen, what can be used with it.? Ann Louise Gittleman: Could be if the prescription is off for your needs even though the hormones are so called natural Did you have some sort of test to determine your specific requirements? Also, the progest cream has been found to balance estrogen levels as well. Dearest: Ann Louise, share whatever information you have for women in menopause who suffer from palpitations. Thanks :) Ann Louise Gittleman: I have found that palpitations can be best controlled with a potassium/magnesium combo called Cell Mins from the aspartates. Dearest: Thank you, Ann Louise.... BColl, please go ahead :) BColl38000: Continue to take vitamins to up hormone levels along with progesterone cream for hair loss? Ann Louise Gittleman: Yes. But please remember that if your vitamins and minerals contain too much copper, then hair loss can be increased. LeggyBlnde: What is the relationship between copper and panic attacks? Ann Louise Gittleman: Researchers have found that excess copper from birth control pills water pipes, vegetarian diets and even copper in multi vits can contribute to hair loss because the copper displaces zinc. Dearest: Ann Louise, vegetarian diets? Ann Louise Gittleman: Vegetarian diets provide too much copper and not enough zinc and so often times I find that a vegetarian has hair loss problems, skin breakouts and emotional ups and downs which can be related to this mineral imbalance. Soy is notorious for providing too much copper if you have it everyday in the form of soy milk, Etc. Ann Louise Gittleman: The progesterone creams will also balance estrogen levels although they do not contain estrogen per se. The progest can go the estrogen receptor sites when it is filled up. Hope this helps Leggy. Dearest: Okay, Cesca, go ahead now :) CescaSF: What are some sources of hydrochloric acid? Ann Louise Gittleman: You have to buy hydrochloric acid at the health food store. It comes from beets and is known as betaine HCL. Thelma3000: What is Wild Yam Cream? Ann Louise Gittleman: It is a natural cream made from the Wild Yam which is known to have the precursors of progesterone in it. BChilltop: Carcinogens and veggies? Should I have concerns about any in particular? Ann Louise Gittleman: Yes, Strawberries are loaded with sprays as are apples. Of course, if they are organic, then don't worry. The problem today is that with all of the newer pesticides, they act as estrogen mimics, increasing the risk of breast cancer. Dearest: Ann Louise, what about thorough washing of these fruits prior to eating? Ann Louise Gittleman: Great idea. But regular soap and water won't do the trick. I recommend a Clorox bath for all my fruits, veggies, and animal products. The recipe can be found in my books. Dearest: So, are you recommending we put them in the washing machine with the rest of the laundry? Ann Louise Gittleman: LOL BayouClog1: Everytime I try to drink the recommended amount of water, I have a problem. I am a teacher and can't go to bathroom all day, will my body adjust? Ann Louise Gittleman: I can relate. I believe, that you may be an individaul who can use more natural sea salt in the diet, which will hold your water better, if you know what I mean. CPNEWTON: I have Addisons disease and also take synthroid. Is progest safe for me to use? Dr says I am not menopausal. Ann Louise Gittleman: Yes, the natural progest would be fine for you. Remember it is the very best thing to combat PMS. Sp it is not just for menopause. CAJASS: Do veggies have copper? What Is the need for copper in our diets? Ann Louise Gittleman: Most veggies do not have copper but if you are on a strict vegetarian diet, you will not be having enough zinc which important for hair, nails, skin, and healing in general. Dearest: Ann Louise, what about if we add zinc supplements to our diets? (those of us who are vegetarians) Ann Louise Gittleman: Yes, Perfect. Suggest you supplement with not more than 50 mg. of zinc per day. Especially if you are a vegetarian. BColl38000: Took black cohosh, gave me migraine and raised blood pressure, will nat. progest. do same? Ann Louise Gittleman: Thanks for your comment. I have heard of alot of bad responses from black cohosh, a natural estogenic herb. NO. The progest should not give you problems. CescaSF: Suggested daily dosage of betaine HCL? Ann Louise Gittleman: The amount is standardized on each bottle. Follow the label. Generally two per meal is suggested. Remember this is particularly helpful for those with Type A Blood. Dearest: Thanks, Ann Louise..... Samccaron, go ahead with your question :) Samccaron: I'm considering taking creatine monohydrate. Is it safe? Ann Louise Gittleman: Creatine is known to help the muscles and many of my body builders use it. Just make sure to drink a lot of water. BChilltop: How can one tell if their birth control pills have copper--and how to balance that. I am hypoglycemic. Ann Louise Gittleman: Birth control pills raise copper levels because they raise estrogen. I suggest to help with your hypoglycemia that you eat small amounts of protein at each meal, and that you also consider some adrenal supporting nutrients like pantothenic Acid and vitamin C. CAJASS: You suggest potasium & magnesium for palpatations. Can't potasium be dangerous if levels are high how do we know? Ann Louise Gittleman: You are right. But the combo I am suggesting with the magnesium is a 200 mg. per three capsules which is way way below the danger point. BayouClog1: In reference to earlier question of mine. I have a problem with water retention, that is why I want to drink more water. Does body get used to all this water Ann Louise Gittleman: It can sometimes, but oftentimes the water retention can also be caused by weak adrenals. Do you have low blood pressure - a common symptom of adrenal burnout? BayouClog1: Not really. Ann Louise Gittleman: Then, my dear, why not consider B6 and sea salt to hold your water? Lacewing28: How can Progest balance our body with estrogen, since it is progesterone? Ann Louise Gittleman: Once again, let me reiterate. Although the progesterone cream contains the progesterone once the progesterone receptor sites are filled, in many cases the body uses the progesterone to satisfy its estrogen needs.
