About Enid Fox

(Enid Fox's second visit to Power Surge) OnlineHost: Enid Fox has entered the room. Dearest: I created the GIGS (G)etting (I)nto (G)ood (S)hape Program for Power Surge especially because women going through menopause often have weight issues, feel sluggish, lose bone mass, muscle tone and aren't aware that EXERCISE and FITNESS are essential for optimum health, to say nothing of being viable methods of coping with so many of menopause's issues. How fortunate that among those participating in Power Surge was a woman certified in Strength and Personal Training. My guest tonight accepted my offer to head up the Power Surge GIGS Program and the rest is history :) E N I D F O X says, "At age 45, I am a passionate advocate for women's fitness, especially resistance training for women." Enid has been a dialysis technician for 20 years. Her job is physical and she boasts, "I can do everything the "guys" can do, and more!" :) After suffering a host of joint injuries, due to over training, Enid feels that at age 45, "I feel stronger and fitter than ever and I really want to help motivate other women to feel this good!" And, indeed you have :) Thanks for joining us tonight in Power Surge, Enid. Why don't you share with us some of the success stories you've seen since becoming Power Surge's "GIGS" Personal Fitness Trainer.. thanks and welcome :) Enid Fox: Thanks this is great! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity for sharing your spot in cyberspace with me and the ongoing support. Thanks also to the GIGS Surgettes who show me that the feminine spirit gets stronger and better with age. Success stories... we have several here tonight. Several women have reached goals for weight loss. I think the most significant successes are those of women who feel better, feel more vital and have a more positive outlook on life now. Dearest: Thanks, Enid... tell us why exactly exercise and diet are so important in coping with menopausal complaints. Thanks :) Enid Fox: Being in balance is important for overall health. Physical and emotional and mental balance is difficult during this part of life. If we can take care of our bodies, the process of menopause goes better. Yoga is physical but it also helps one feel less stressed. Dearest: I'm so proud of what you've accomplished with GIGS, Enid, as I'm sure many others are :) Dearest: VB, go ahead with your question :) VBrando101: When I do any extensive walking or riding my bike, my legs start to itch like crazy have you ever heard of this? Enid Fox: This may seem silly but when I shave my legs that happens!! You may have an allergy to something and sweating irritates it. VBrando101: I saw a woman write to a personal trainer and they said it has something to do with circulation? Enid Fox: Circulation, I really don't know about that, it could also be dry skin. Dearest: Enid, I just thought of something I'd like to ask you, what about exercise when it's so hot? Enid Fox: Keep hydrated, listen to your body if you feel weak or tired - go slow. Dearest: Thanks, Pandora, go ahead Pandoralou: 47/post men/ have 40 lbs to lose - have been lifting four months, no real results. Should I reduce first and then lift for results? Enid Fox: No, a high volume, low intensity resistance program will help you but you may actually gain weight as muscle weighs more than fat. Pandoralou: Light weights or heavy? Enid Fox: Light. Dearest: Enid, Dr. Andrew Weil said on Oprah the other day that "walking is the only exercise we really need." Your thoughts? Enid Fox: For many people it is, it is easy and low impact, you can reap big benefits from walking regularly. Dearest: Thanks. Shayron, go ahead :) SHAYRON47: 48 / hysterectomy - can estrogen supplements cause weight gain in middle? how to lose this? Enid Fox: Yes and this seems to be the million dollar question! A fitness program that includes resistance training, aerobics and flexibility will help. Dearest: Sleepylady, go ahead. Sleepylady: I joined a gym but never go, I want to diet but am not motivated, do you have any ideas? Enid Fox: Get support, like GIGS, make it fun, easy does it, make and keep exercise appointments and listen to your body. Dearest: Thanks, Enid. Jellyfsh, go ahead. JEIIYFSH: Is it normal to loose desire for sex if so how do we get it back? Dearest: Remember that Enid Fox is a fitness trainer :) Enid Fox: This isn't a fitness question but from what I've read about menopause, the answer is yes. Dearest: Ren50, go ahead, please. Ren50: Just started doing T'ai chi, will it help meno symptoms? Enid Fox: It will help to balance your body and mind which is very useful during menopause. Dearest: Catalina, go ahead. Catalina5: I have noticed that I tire relatively quickly--how can I increase endurance? Enid Fox: You mean while exercising? If you are talking about aerobics, try interval training, do you know what that is? Catalina5: No, I tire after a few hours walking, for example. Enid Fox: Catalina, try increasing the intensity and then slowing down, interval training. Dearest: Enid, many of us never had weight around the midriff area... can you recommend an exercise for this? Enid Fox: The midriff weight problem cannot be spot reduced all we can do is spot tone. We can increase muscle mass in an area which will make the body look younger and firmer, but when we lose fat, we lose it all over, not area by area. Dearest: Zelda, go ahead :) ZeldaGM: 32/ total hysterectomy July 97. Am on the Climera estrogen patches have gained 70 lbs am hungry and tried all the time the only exercise I can do is to swim but its hard to get motivated. Glad to hear your answer on the midriff area. Enid Fox: Start off walking, don't focus on your long term goal of losing the weight, just get active so you can feel better, have fun with it!! something to look forward to, your time for yourself. Then, you should start feeling stronger and more energetic and can add some resistance training to your program. Dearest: Zelda, please email PianoMary for info about the "early pausers" chats. ZeldaGM: ok thanks dear Dearest: PFWLJ, go ahead, please :) PFWLJ: Recent studies indicate weight training is better for bone building than calcium supplements. How do you feel about supplementation? Do you take any vitamins? Enid Fox: I do take calcium, Vit C, B and E. I think that you should do both, take supplements and exercise! Dearest: Opadopa, go ahead with your question. Opadopa1: I have palpitations quite often, worn halter monitor, checked out ok. Dr. doesn't seem concerned, but I am! When palps start when I'm exercising, it makes me very nervous & I stop exercising. Help! Any suggestions on dealing with this? Enid Fox: If you aren't comfortable but your doc is, maybe you should get a second opinion I'm not a physician so I really can't recommend what you should do, sorry! Dearest: Missy, go ahead with your question. Missy968: My question is I have been walking on my treadmill for over a year and have lost about 13 lbs but now I am also working out on a machine to work your muscles and don't seem to be losing anymore weight. I don't want to put muscles over this fat and want to know if I should stop working the muscles and just get back to the treadmill until I have lost enough what should I do? Enid Fox: Have you had your "body fat composition" done? Muscle weighs more than fat and you may gain weight but lose fat. Using a bathroom scale won't help you understand your body composition. I wouldn't stop the resistance training, I would get a body comp done. Missy968: Ok...thank you Enid! Dearest: Hmwrpr, please go ahead. Hmwrpr: I understand exercise helps lower cholesterol. What's the best thing to do? Enid Fox: Regular aerobic exercise can reduce cholesterol as will stress reduction Hmwrpr: Is walking enough Enid Fox: Yes, walking is great!! Hmwrpr: I do two miles a day; hope it works!! Thanks Dearest: Wonderful answers, Enid... tell us.. what's your daily regimen for fitness? Enid Fox: I do aerobics 5 times a week and weight resistance training 2-3x a week. I do yoga 4 days a week, I kinda mix it up during the week. I try to listen to my body and my mood and do what will make me feel good! Dearest: Great, Enid... you look marvelous, darling.. just marvelous! LOL Hockey, go ahead. Hockey8423: How can I get my son to stop eating fats he eats a lot? Enid Fox: Laurel Mellin has a great book out about how food can be an emotional issue, I suggest you read her book. Dearest: Do you know the name of the book Enid? Enid Fox: Opps, it's called "The Solution" Dearest: LOL Enid Fox: LOL Dearest: MARFGR, go ahead :) MARFGR: Does the Easy Glider really help to lose in the hips and thighs. Enid Fox: Again, spot reduction is a myth. It will help tone. Dearest: Joheid, go ahead. Joheid: What is the latest on HMB? Is it true that while stimulating muscle twitch it also helps lean fat? Enid Fox: HMB is an amino acid used to retain muscle mass. I am not sure about it helping lean fat. Dearest: Win, go ahead :) WINDOCK1: Can you tell you tell us what the "Fat Burners" being sold are? Enid Fox: I am not a big supporter of supplements for short cuts to good health, I believe in eating healthy, whole foods and a balanced physical fitness program for optimum health results, those products cost a lot and often don't do anything. WINDOCK1: Thank you Dearest: MARFGR, go ahead, please :) MARFGR: Does Chromium Picolinate really help to lose weight and help with metabolism? Enid Fox: Again, it may have some effect but for optimum, long term health benefits, stick to old fashioned exercise and good eating! MARFGR: Thanks Dearest: Zelda, go ahead. ZeldaGM: How do you feel about a vegan diet does this help with weight loss more and better fitness and with menopause? Enid Fox: I followed a vegan, no animal products, diet for 2 years in my 20's. I felt great at the time but it sure was boring. You will probably lose weight because it is very low fat. Dearest: Enid, is the protein in tofu burned up as easily as that of animal protein? Enid Fox: More easily! Dearest: Oh, great. Thanks :) Debbie, go ahead with your question :) Debbie454: I read an article that claimed 45 min. of brisk walking a day and you have no need to diet, what is your opinion? Dearest: Excellent question :) Enid Fox: Everyone is different! How can we know that? The walking is very good but add to it a healthy diet and it's better. Dearest: All I can say is after 45 minutes of walking, you'll probably be too tired to eat :) Bay, go ahead. BayouClog1: I dance 4 days a week, too tired to exercise the other, would just doing sit ups count on the other days? Enid Fox: What a great idea!!! If you enjoy it and you're adding a little something as you go along, that's a great way to succeed! Dearest: Enid, are any of our GIGS success stories here tonight? Enid Fox: Yes, Cdgee4, Catalina, PianoMary, Cpouy THRV Coll: ::::applauding success stories:::: Dearest: Perhaps after the next two questions (Mimi and MAR) we can find out their secrets :) Dearest: Mimi, go ahead :) MIMISUSAN: What are your thoughts on Calarad (sp). I see it all over. Expensive. Enid Fox: I have never heard of Calarad, I am not a supporter of supplements. Dearest: MAR, go ahead. MARFGR: My doc said that fresh fruit is fattening because of the sugar what's your opinion? Enid Fox: Sugar is not fattening but caloric. Fresh fruit is very nutritious, vitamins etc. I disagree with doc! Dearest: So what else is new Enid Fox: LOL MARFGR: Thanks. I'll continue eating it. Dearest: If you're a GIGS Success story, can you please type YES to the screen? Cdgee4: yes Wingy54: yes Catalina5: yes CPouy: yes PianoMary: yes Dearest: Cdgee, tell us how you got motivated and what have you done? I have lost inches. Toned all over. Dearest: Fabulous! Catalina, and you? :) Catalina5: Make exercise my daily priority - for ME. Dearest: Great, Catalina... and you're feeling better as a result? Catalina5: You bet. Dearest: CPuoy, how have you done? CPouy: Walking, weights, careful eating, practicing better breathing, and Enid's support. Enid Fox: Like they don't get enough! Dearest: PianoMary, how have you been motivated by GIGS? PianoMary: I go to WW and workout 3 -4 times a week at my gym. I lost almost 30 pounds since Sept and 4 dress sizes. Dearest: SanFranTastic!!!!! Enid, isn't it wonderful? Enid Fox: It's great, in the last 5 months we have learned so much together, it's a wonderful feeling. Dearest: Sleepy, please go ahead. Sleepylady: How do I get more info on GIGS program? Enid Fox: I will send it to you, no problem! Sleepylady: THANKS Dearest: Pandora, go ahead, please. Pandoralou: Heel spur--any suggestions? Enid Fox: Need to see an orthopedic doctor, sorry! Dearest: SAS, go ahead, please. SASCREAT: Enid, I lurk on your board, but been most helpful to me. Thanks! Enid Fox: Thanks, love to hear you thoughts next time you're lurking! Dearest: Enid, besides getting us back into shape...looking better... tell us how exercise can help with things like hot flashes....depression.... mood swings and other menopausal complaints. Thanks ;) Enid Fox: Studies have shown that women who exercise regularly do indeed have fewer hot flashes than women who don't. Also, it reduces stress. Dearest: Win, go ahead :) WINDOCK1: Can you tell us more about yoga and how to start with it? Enid Fox: Yoga is excellent for balancing the body and mind. I have a yoga routine for menopause that I will send to you or anyone else interested. There are good videos available and many YMCA's, fitness centers and colleges offer yoga classes The best way is to take a class. I will send you my yoga info. WINDOCK1: Thank you I appreciate your time and help. Dearest: Thanks, Enid.. Nette, go ahead with your question :) Nette76: But does exercise help with the depression? Enid Fox: Yes, it can be very effective for mild depression. Nette76: What about deep depression? Dearest: Nette, exercise is effective for depression... perhaps you have to see a doctor for severe depression first. Nette76: Thanks ! Enid Fox: Dearest is correct for severe depression see a doctor. Dearest: THRV Coll, go ahead :) THRV Coll: Enid Fox what is the difference between Yoga and regular stretching? Enid Fox: Yoga has postures that are designed to stimulate internal organs and glands, it is more than simply stretching out the muscles. It helps develop balance and poise. Dearest: Okay, Bucher... go ahead :) Buchermj: Can you recommend any good books showing/telling Yoga? Enid Fox: Yes, Yoga Over 50 by Mary Stewart 20 Minute yoga workouts by the American Yoga society Dearest: I have one here, Bucher....a guest who will be in Power Surge in May. Mara Carrico -- "Yoga Journal's Basics." Buchermj: Thanks Dearest: SAS, go ahead. SASCREAT: Six small meals a day, verses 3 larger. Your opinion, please? Enid Fox: Several small meals, grazing some call it, is a very healthy way to eat and is said to help with weight loss. SASCREAT: Thank you, now I feel like grazing cow! LOL THRV Coll: lol Sas Enid Fox: lol Dearest: Enid, what's the best way for someone to *begin* a fitness regimen? Enid Fox: First, get support, join Dearest's GIGS Program! Make it fun, and start off easy. Many women have great expectations and push too hard to start, then they burn out and lose interest. Easy does it is a good way to start! Dearest: May people Email you for your plan? Enid Fox: Absolutely, I have lots and lots of info I send out weekly Dearest: Tell us about setting up "appointments" too, please :) Enid Fox: It's important to make a commitment to yourself to do this if you have it written down on a schedule, and keep your appointment you will see progress. Dearest: Excellent.. .thanks, Enid. GB122645, go ahead. GB122645: Why do I always feel so bloated am 52 and had a hyst. at 40 Enid Fox: It could be HRT if you are on it, I really can't make that "diagnosis" from here.
