How Revival Soy Gave Me Back My Life
By Alice Stamm (aka Dearest)
Original article written in 1998

Guess what? Soy is not new. It's only new to those jumping on the bandwagon of "trends" targetting the baby boomers now addressing menopause. Power Surge has been talking about the benefits of soy for 14 years and about Revival Soy Protein since early 1998. From the time I entered perimenopause, I was so desperate for relief, I must have tried everything. I've spent a fortune in search of anything that would help me through the uncomfortable process of perimenopause that impacted every aspect of my life. Hot flashes, palpitations, internal shaking, anger, mood swings, vaginal dryness, insomnia, general uneasiness. There's a list of 34 symptoms of menopause that's been circulating for years, but my own list of symptoms was longer. I hated the feelings of isolation -- wondering if I'd ever feel "whole" again. Contrary to the mega-multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical industry for years touting HRT (synthetic hormone replacement therapy) as protection against heart disease, I've always been very vocal regarding my concerns about these promises. Too many women on synthetic HRT were coming to Power Surge complaining about elevated blood pressure and cholesterol, migraines, the potential for life-threatening strokes and blood clots, excessive bleeding problems, breast cancer -- to only mention a few of the adverse side effects of synthetic HRT. After years of talking openly about these concerns, in July, 2002, the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) abruptly halted its study of HRT (using Premarin and Prempro) because they determined that the drugs used in the study could increase a woman's risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and breast cancer. Suddenly, after years of being assured that the benefits of using synthetic HRT outweighed the risks, we were now being informed that the risks outweighed the benefits! This left women more confused than ever about how to treat their menopausal symptoms.

Power Surge endorses Revival Soy Protein to treat menopause I had tried more soy products than I can recall during my early perimenopausal years. The newsletters on this site contain many articles about the effectiveness of soy protein and isoflavones, written years before I discovered Revival. I've personally sampled dozens of soy shakes, most of them tasteless, some having grainy textures similar to ground glass, the majority of them made from genetically modified soybeans (GMO). Although soy milk may provide some benefits, I don't know of one soy milk product that contains a fraction of the amount of soy isoflavones Revival does to effect the same overall relief of menopausal symptoms and general health benefits. As for tofu, I've tried cooking it every imaginable way to make it more palatable, but I never find it tasty, nor am I prepared to eat a pound of it every day in order to get the right amount of soy isoflavones.

An avid Web surfer since the Internet became public, I discovered Revival Soy Protein in May of 1998. I was impressed with the large levels of isoflavones, the heart and bone protection, relief from menopausal symptoms, the protection from breast and endometrial cancer. I was further impressed that it had been used in research at the #1 research institution in the country. Moreover, it wasn't another health food store product by some generic company, but developed by mainstream medical doctors seeking remedies for their menopausal patients who couldn't or wouldn't use conventional hormone therapy. I'd tried everything else. Yet, with all the positive studies and results I'd read about, I still had my doubts. Why should this work any better than the others? But, I figured I'd try one last time. So, I placed my first order in June of 1998. I knew I was deriving some health benefits from all my vitamins and minerals, but I needed to *SEE* results. I didn't want anymore hot flashes!

My first order arrived. There was no cannister of loose soy powder with the standard scoop, but individual serving packets. The order even included my own mini portable blender (it now comes with a great shaker cup) to mix my shakes and a 16 oz. measuring/mixing/drinking cup with a built-in straw. BUT, but before trying it, I thought, "Hmmm... pretty packaging, smart people -- it's probably no different from all the others.

Was I wrong! Not only was the shake finely ground, nicely textured, it was absolutely delicious. But, would it do the trick? I still doubted. While sipping my first shake, I read the literature that came with the order. Each serving contains 160 mg. of soy isoflavones from the heart of NON-GENETICALLY ENGINEERED (non-modified) soybeans, unlike the standard soy shakes and soy products which are made from genetically modified soybeans and have come under scrutiny. All those other shakes I'd tried contained a fraction of the isoflavones in Revival. You'd have to drink SIX Genisoy shakes to get the same amount of soy isoflavones in just one Revival shake. Each shake contains as many isoflavones as the average Japanese woman consumes every day. There's a reason they're considered among the healthiest people in the world. They don't even have a word for "hot flashes" in Japan.

I had some questions, so I called their toll-free number, 1-800-700-8687, and spoke with Dr. Aaron Tabor, MD, the Medical Research Director who led the team in developing Revival. He was very knowledgeable about menopause, phytoestrogens and hormones. He was compasssionate about my plight to find something to ameliorate the miserable symptoms I was suffering from. He answered all my questions and explained that the reason he developed Revival was because his mother was having a miserable time with conventional options and, as a physician, he knew there must be another way she could alleviate her menopausal issues.

Suffice it to say that within a week of starting Revival, I stopped having hot flashes and the sweats. Something I hadn't bargained for was relief from the menopausal mood swings that had made my life miserable. The irritability and debilitating mood swings -- gone. I had spent about 4-5 years feeling isolated, removed, uncomfortable in my own skin, out of touch with my feelings. I was once again enjoying life. The rage and anger are gone. It even helped my vaginal dryness issues. I have spent a fortune on products for menopause, but the renewed sense of energy and emotional comfort I feel using Revival is something for which I will be eternally grateful. I'm in good company when people like Dr. Chris Northrup, Dr. Susan Love, and Lillie Shockney RN, BS, MAS, Education and Outreach Director at Johns Hopkins Breast Center, use and recommend Revival. It is so appropriately named -- Revival. It gave me back my life!

There's More?

If all of the above isn't enough, I'd never had elevated cholesterol until I was in the throes of perimenopause. I was astounded to find my cholesterol levels so high. My doctor wanted me to go on statins, but I refused. After three years of trying to reduce my menopause-related high cholesterol with no success, at my next doctor's visit -- six months after starting Revival -- my lipid profile improved tremendously. I couldn't attribute it to anything other than Revival. It was the only change I had made during those six months. I do know that as our estrogen levels diminish during perimenopause, our cholesterol levels can soar. I have never eaten a high fat diet, fried foods, used much butter or margarine and hardly ever ate eggs. After stopping all cheese products, eating only an occasional egg, cutting down on all fat except for a little canola or olive oil and using every vitamin, herb and natural product to reduce cholesterol, still my total cholesterol was up to 311.

After six months on Revival , my total cholesterol dropped from 311 to 196. My LDL (bad cholesterol) was 203. After six months on Revival, it dropped to 104. My HDL (good cholesterol) was 43. It rose to 57. For three years my triglycerides had been hovering around 299. They dropped to 69. When discussing these results with my doctor, he asked, "How did you lower your cholesterol so much? I don't have this kind of success with my patients on Lipitor." I attribute these lowered levels to Revival Soy Protein. Other women in Power Surge have reported extreme drops in their cholesterol as well, to say nothing of eliminating so many of their menopausal symptoms. A few women using Lipitor for quite some time, with little or no changes in their high cholesterol levels, started using Revival for a few months. One's cholesterol went from 316 to 185. Another's was reduced by 100 points. She put her husband, who had severely high cholesterol, on Revival and his doctor was aghast at how his cholesterol had come down. One woman, who'd been on anti-hypertensives couldn't lower her blood pressure. After three months on Revival, her pressure is normal. Go figure.

Note: I'm not saying that Revival Soy is a replacement for prescription medication. You should not discontinue a prescription unless you consult with your healthcare practitioner. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Revival is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

You'll be pleasantly surprised at how many menopause-related symptoms can be diminished or eliminated with Revival. Read the articles in their Health Library. Revival can be ordered via their toll-free number, 1-800-700-1560, or it can be ordered online directly from their Web site.

Power Surge is in its 15th year as an established and well-respected menopause community. After a JAMA article (The Journal of the American Medical Assc'n) expressed concern about the thousands of sites providing inaccurate health information on the Internet, HEALTH Magazine followed up with an article in which they selected the top women's health experts to sort through thousands of sites to find those that met the criteria: accurate, informative, safe and reliable. Power Surge was selected one of "The 25 Best Health Sites for Women" and, similarly, Forbes Magazine's Best of the Web 2001 featured Power Surge in its cover article about the best health sites, Use With Care. HEALTH and FORBES Magazines are only two of many who have praised Power Surge as the #1 site for women in menopause.
