Hi everyone,
When I was pregnant with my children it was impressed on me at childbirth classes that the only reason we feel pain during childbirth is because of our lifestyles in the West, our attitudes to childbirth and the positions we use. Out in deepest Africa childbirth is quick & simple and pain is negligible.
Also it is true that animals don't appear to suffer either.
...but what about perimenopause. Does it exist in remotest Africa or Asia? ... or is it our Western diet/lifestyles?
Anyone heard of other animals with symptoms? Monkeys with migraines, Pandas with palpitations, Giraffes with gastritis, Aardvarks with anxiety - that sort of thing?
Just a passing thought of mine - I'd be interested to hear other peoples views!

Actually, just read the PS article on Hot Flashes. It appears we are indeed far worse off in the west for our Peri symptoms!
Does this mean if we change our diets to high soy/ low fat/high fibre, the symptoms will decrease or is it now too late?

HI Squiggle
I think we have peri worse in the West cos of many factors and it isnt just recent times - this has been the case for hundreds of years according to articles I have read.
Perhaps it is somewhat about perceptions - perhaps our lives are so stressful and 'unnatural' that we feel all this so much more than people who live more in tune with their envirnoment.......
From what I have read online women in Asia have less insomnia, anxiety, mood swings & depression than we do in the west and also less vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes, palpitations, night sweats and the dizzies). Japanese women between 40 to 60 apparently complain of stiff shoulders more than anything else?
I wasnt expecting peri and certainly didnt know all these symtpoms I was having - so I didnt wish them on my self - they came first before my realisation that this was peri (and not death!) - so expectation had nothing to do with it for me......
If you suddenly go on a low fat / high fibre diet you could find yourself with even less oestrogen - introduce chnage gradually - have a balanced diet with lots of exercise and relaxation on the side!!!
