hi,

does anyone get tremendous headaches right at the end of their period and anything you take doesn't take the headache away? Whew! i have been getting these lately but they seem to come right at the end of my period and last 3-4 days and it's horrible!!!

thanks

I get bad headaches starting about day 2 of my period and it lasts for about 5 days, sometimes longer.I haven't found anything that helps yet,i usually use either an ice pack or heating pad on my head...the ice seems to help more than the heat.

Hi TC,

I get really bad migraines at the end of my period. NOTHING has helped. I've tried it all. Herbals, vitamins, everything. I never got migraines prior to peri. When they first started, I got them either the day before or the day I started my period. Then they started coming at the end. For a while they would only last a day. Now, they usually last two days, sometimes three. I have posted on several other threads re: migraines hoping someone had some advice. Often my neck aches as well. Hot showers help this a little. My mother said she got migraines as she got closer to post meno. After post meno, she never had another migraine and she's been post for 24 years now. She hasn't had one migraine. I am hoping to follow in her footsteps.

Some of the others have posted that Excedrin Migraine helps. I haven't tried it yet. Today, I am on day 5 of current period and not looking forward to the migraine attack. I think I would rather just continue to bleed forever. laugh.gif

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Sometimes it just makes you feel better knowing that you are not alone. biggrin.gif

Hi TC,

I also began getting "period migraines" when I was about 46 (now 52). There is usually a bad headache the day before my period, lasting into the second day. Then, I usually have a reprieve from the pain for 2 days. Then, the day before my period ends and the last day of my period, the more intense migraine appears. If I take asprin or ibuprofen starting 2-3 days before my period, I don't get the pre-period migraine; but often still get the after-period migraine. You need to keep a schedule of dosing. Every 4 hours, starting 2-3 days BEFORE your period.

Even with the proper dosage, NOTHING would make the after-period migraine stop; the OTC pain med. only lessened the pain. It would wear me out! I have a high tolerance for pain, but I would get so tired of my head hurting, and trying to function anyway. sad.gif

A few months ago, I decided to try Pro-gest (OTC). I followed the directions and 3 weeks later, when I had my period, there was NO painful migraine. I was amazed and joyful. The next month, however, I did have normal headaches. Ibuprofen was enough to make it go away comletely. So Pro-gest and Ibuprofen helped get rid of the headaches.

This month, I stopped taking BCPs. I felt great and all my meno symptoms disappeared mysteriously. blink.gif On day 19 of my cycle, I began a headache that lasted all afternoon and evening, so I decided to begin taking my new bioidentical sublingual tablets. The headache was gone when I woke up and has not returned!

From the research I've done, it appears that headaches and migraines are a sign of estrogen deficiency. Our estrogen level falls sharply--down to its monthly low--in the days just before and during the period. Women like us, who usually suffer from estrogen deficiency will have specific symptoms at this time.

Obviously, by taking progesterone (the Pro-gest & now my bioidentical Progesterone) I was able to balance the little bit of estrogen I have with the added progesterone...and it made me pain free. The real test will come this weekend. If I have a period, I will be able to see if I have a recurrence of pre and post period migraines. I hope to God(dess) that the bio P. works!

Hope some of this info helps!

I start the headaches the day before and usually last about 2-3 days. As I sit here and type I have a slight headache, I took 2 advil before bed and woke up this morning and took another 2 it help very little, but not completely gone. I have never had a problem with headaches while having my period until this peri stuff started. sad.gif

Zoweee....I remember those pounders! I'd get migraines so bad I couldn't even find a good position for my head so I could go to sleep, and sleep was the only cure! If I was away from home when I got one, fortunately I was able to take aspirin. Three regular Excedrin worked [temporarily]. After about four or five hours, I always knew the aspirin was wearing off because I'd feel that dull pounding starting up again. The headaches definitely had something to do with hormones. I could expect a headache a day or two before my period, and it would come and go until a few days after my period ended.

Now that I'm post meno, I can't remember having a migraine! Maybe once a year, and nothing like before.

This is what I have tried and it does work. It definately has something to do with the unbalance of hormones. I think it is different every month too so it is hard to figure out. I have been taking the OTC Progets cream for over a year now and it usually helps most of the time. One month I ran out of cream and I had such an awful headache that month that I know that the cream is really helping me. It isn't a cure all but I used to get migraines every single month before I started taking it. I really hope that when I am done, I won't get any more headaches either. They are just terrible. I really feel for anyone that gets these monthly migraines.

Thank you all for your replies... whew! it is awful. my period has been gone for a week and dang if i didn't get that headache again. it starts at the base of my head top of neck and then takes off from there. laying down is the only thing that helps me. and lord knows we can't lay around all day! then the weird head feeling comes after my headaches and i don't feel right. this has to go!

Good luck all.
