I am post menopausal and have just been diagnosed with vaginal dryness and thinning. My mother passed away over 30 years ago from breast cancer. The RN just perscribed Premarin. I am not sure if she read my file. After doing a little research on Premarin, I am still not sure whether or not I should be using it. Does anyone know any info on the product/subject? Is it ok for a woman with cancer history to be using an estogen product? Or should I go the herbal direction and vitamins? Help

First of all, if I were you I'd set up an appt to discuss this with your gynecologist (including your mother's medical history). You have some major decisions to make and need as much information and/or guidance as you can get (from the doctor, not the nurse).

I suffered with what I called neverending vaginitis for years. Then my gyne convinced me to use premarin cream twice a week (also, pelvic examinations were getting unbearably painful due to the thinning of the vaginal walls). I don't have your special concern, but I'm still concerned about Premarin but I've always gotten a PAP test annually and figure that's my way of keeping an eye on things. Maybe for women with your concern who use Premarin, they will check twice a year? (and there may be a way to get your insurance to cover it twice a year...something to check out)

You might also want to do some research on the Internet (some of the medical websites) and I believe there are some books written by Susan Love?? (not sure if that's her name) who is an MD & has written about all the side effects of menopause (yes, definitely check her stuff out - she has a great reputation).
