Does anyone else feel like they are woosie/tilted almost all the time?
This is my first post after reading many threads here. I am 39 and believe I could be starting peri. My symptoms started a few months ago. The most disturbing to me is the woosie feeling almost like I am drunk or being tugged to one side or another. I've also had these symptoms off and on: racing heart around 120-130bpm, night sweats, hot flush or feelings of being feverish especially on upper body and face, tingling feeling up the back of my head, and anxiety to name the big ones.
I also have had episodes where I feel a quick dizzy spell, then sever anxiety like something isnt' right, then racing heart, then the heat comes.......seems to occur around mid-day but not everyday. Anyone else experience this or have this weird feeling prior to hot flash? In addition to these symptoms I often have thoughts that there is something wrong, and I might be dying.....anyone else have this too?
I've been to the doctor for bloodwork, Thyroid is fine and have had EKG and worn a monitor. So far everything is considered normal.
Thanks for your feedback.

Hi Lucent-
You are certainly not too young for this to be peri. I have had the woosie tilted feeling too. I really felt off balance when walking around. I remember having to hold onto the bed post while trying to vacum. Racing heart (had that) anixety (have that sometimes 24/7 thru the roof) Feeling something is not right (that too). My blood tests were all normal along with other tests taken. This started for me at 45. I am now going on 48 and still dealing with it as best I can.
What helps me is bio-identical hormones. Tried exercise, CBT, supplements, homeopathic potions.... nothing else was really as effective for me. I have to keep tweeking my hormones and this can get discouraging ( been doing this for 3 years now) but that is what I have to do.
I wanted to go thru this the natural way but I just could not function without the hormones and you do what you need to in order to feel good.
Perhaps you should order a saliva test thru Bellevue Pharmacy (on PS) and get started on hormones. You might be able to avoid some of the crappy symptoms I have had to deal with. Yes for me they get worse as this progresses.
Keep posting and reading

On this board, you will find many strong women who have experienced what you are going through, will be going through and having gone through. Read their advice, offer solace and on the other side (years from now

) you will be a strong person for having been on this board.

Aren't all of the symptoms of peri terrible? Add me to the list of all of the above! I also get the woosie/dizzy feelings. While going through them I wonder if I am going to pass out . I find that when I am getting anxious and I feel my heart beating rapidly that is when it happens. Some days I just feel woosie, dizzy and extremely tired all day long (like today). When you get these mixed in with the chest aches (which are really bothersome to me), the leg aches, the headaches, the insomnia and everything else you really feel as if you are not going to make it through the day. At least that is how I feel and I am sure that there are alot of other women here that feel the exact same way. But you have found the most helpful, understanding place here. If ever you feel that you are going crazy with a symptom, come here, post and you will come to know that you are not the only one in the world that has felt what you are feeling or going through. What I do with the woosie/dizzy feeling is to just sit or lie down for 20 minutes and just try to take it easy or go at a slower pace. I think that is all that we can do. Good luck and take care!

I have that tilted feeling too. I was in Walmart today and I get so spacey and dizzy in that
store - I just can't figure out why ! I've had the dizzies for over a year, but the tilting sensation
is relatively new ...
It sounds like you are starting peri. Welcome to the boards.

Hello everyone. I am new here to this site. I have read a lot of your replies and I have to agree that feeling dizzy and off balance at any given time of the day is bothersome. I have actually been out training on my bike and the sensation hits. I am 49 and have had the worst year ever. Sweats/dizzy/depression/anxiety. Some day I hope to wake up and go wow am I ever glad thats over, but I have a feeling it will be a gradual thing. Does it ever get better? I am tired of fighting this.

Lucent..I started this crazy ride last year when I was 36..so you are def not too young. If it weren't for this board, I dunno what would have happened to me. I really thought I was dying, I started off with what you are describing..feeling like I was going to pass out, I'll never forget where I was or what I was doing...it scared the mud out of me! I get the racing heart thing, much less now thankfully, which of course sends you into a panic mode, and I had all the heart testing too and everything is normal! So..welcome to the ride
They all are right, those who posted before mine, read read read these boards and you'll find such amazing similarities and we all go "and doctors can't figure out WHAT this is?"..but this is a great resource!
Welcome!

Hi
I haven't posted in awhile. Sorry about that. I have been reading the posts though...feel a little bit like a vouyeur.
Anyway, I've been okay (more or less) for the past couple of months but last night, all of a sudden, I started to get that dizzy, vertigo kind of feeling. It's funny, I'm fine during the day but then at night (like now) I'm starting to feel it again.
Based on my experience, I should chalk it up to peri but there's always that scintilla of a thought it's something else.
Ain't it grand!
Have a great night.

lucent,
Hi - yoiu are not alone. My first big symptom was the racing heart thing last October. It woke me up in the middle of the night and scared me so much that I went to the ER the next day. EKG was normal then I had a holter monitor on for 25 hours at the cardiologist on Nov. 4th last year and of course it didn't happen while it was on. I went thru it for several weeks then sporadically since then. Last night it happened again, I woke up and there it was. My skin last night also had a burning tingly feeling then my face felt warm toward the end or the racing heart - it also happened a 2nd time last night but not as bad as the first. I'm exhaused today. I've had many other things happen as well, especially the last 2 month, one being a tension headache since April 14, 2006, 24/7 non stop. I'm on my 4th headache medicine. I'm on bioidentical hormones as well as taking Lexapro because I went into a terribe depression when the headache started too. It's tough but this site has made it bearable. Wonderful people are here to help you get through this. Please join us in the Insta Chat - it's fun and helpful.
Hugs to you.

Looking back, this was my very first symptom of peri. It was a very slight sensation of lightheadedness for about a second. The kind of thing you notice because it's a new sensation, but because it wasn't painful or longer than a second, you just put it aside. I didn't have another one until so many months later that I didn't connect the two experiences. I've had them over the years, but always quite slight and short...sort of
the same feeling you get when you've been bending with your head lower than your waist for a while and then straighten up. Very easy to explain and ignore. Never even mentioned them to anyone. Little did I know it was a symptom of peri.

Oh yes, earlier this year I went through a period of time feeling woosie, felt like I was leaning towards the right, weird head sensation, and feeling anxious. I was able to find relief by taking flaxseed, primrose and borage oil. I hope that you find relief soon.

kar4242, the racing heart was also my very first peri symptom and it scared me to death. I also made a trip to the ER and next to the doctor for a holter monitor which showed extra beats but of course the racing heart didn't happen. I also have the tingly feeling and hot face when it happens. The doctor tried to put it down to hot flashes( I have those and they are definitely different) but to me it has more of a resemblence to a panic attack. It doesn't happen as often now but it can still definitely strike immobilizing fear through me when it does happen.

What a relief it was for me to stumble across this websight! I was "googling" all of the symptoms several of you have listed here... the dizzy feeling... racing heart... fatigue etc... and up you popped. Reading through all of your postings made me feel so much better. Nothing in 8th grade Health class prepares you for the emotional tidal waves, the anxiety, and the stunning realization that "it's" here... that time of your life when change is the norm. Anyway... thank you all for the comfort of common experience!

Hi lucent~
I as well get the dizzy feelings. I cant even really describe them because they seem to be different all the time. Like sometimes when I am walking and I stop it still feels like things are moving. Or sometimes I'll just be sitting and I have this wave of dizziness come over me. I have actually dealt with dizziness for years but since about last fall it has gotten so much worse. My neurologist feels it could be due to migraine associated vertigo. Which I guess would make sense but I get most of my migraines around my period which is when I get most of my dizziness so I have to assume its all linked to hormones. I just hope when all is said and done my migraines and dizziness go away as well.
Take care and know you are not alone!!!

Thanks... I'll take your advice and dig in to the rest of the site. What I've found so far has been amazing... I'm 44, and incredibly releived to find other women in this age brackett who understand what it means to have all these feelings. Both emotional and physical. There are times I know... I KNOW I'm being difficult, irritable, or moody... but I just can't seem to help it. And it's true... you can't explain it to anybody, or expect them to understand. Well, if all else fails, I'll make my husband sit here with me and read through some of these postings! Thanks again for the kind welcome.

Yes I agree that doctors are quick to dismiss this particular symtpom - or put you on a medication for inner ear disturbance ! I often have the tilted feeling, especially in large bright stores like W-Mart. It helps to hold onto a basket for support.
I have dizziness almost all the time now, but it worsens right before period. Coffee and eating sugary things makes it worse too.

Okay, not sleeping through the night for the past 3 yrs is catching up to me. My son is multi-disabled and I have had to listen to his breathing since day one. He was born @ 23 Weeks and was 1 lb 5 oz. You can only imagine how precious he is. He now has a G-tube. More worry. I can't figure this board out. I want to reply to lucent.
I feel like I am heading down the peri-menopause highway too. I have hot flashes and have had to open the freezer to cool down. I am constantly warm even in a cold room. I have vaginal dryness and wierd popping/ bubbly feelings. I have the creepy crawly skin, feels like a spider. Heart flutters and have worn a monitor too..........everything is fine. Right now I am experiencing period like symptoms but no flow???? I feel dizzy most of the time and seeing the reflection of our kitchen ceiling fan in the chrome on the stove totally throws me. I can't stand the sound of the computer, the bathroom fan or be near a pop machine because of the buzzing. It makes my skin crawl. I have no sex drive, insomnia. Total confusion if not for my giant calendar I would be lost. My son had medical appt after medical appt. Pins and needles in my hands and they fall asleep at night. It doesn't matter what the position is. Overall cloudy feeling, the only thing that helps is music..........the oldies. I am 44 and also got the lovely weight around the middle. I have been slim all my life so this feels very strange and I don't like it. My husband is no help. He refuses to believe anything hormone related............thanks a heap.....
Thank you for being in the same boat............I hope we can help each other.........here's to cooler days

Hi Tuscany
If you want to reply to Lucent on a Personal message go up to her message and click on her name - and you will find a page comes up that enable you to reply to her personally!!
I am just 45 - so we are similar age - it is so relieving to find women of my age on the board as my Dr told me I was far too young to be talking about menopause - what dork he was!!!! Now I know better!!!!! Your symtpoms are VERY similar to mine.
You sound as if you have your hands full with your little baby - what a precious little life - and coping with peri too - you must be exhausted
I was laughing at you having the freezer open to cool down!!! I have not had many hot flashes - the one thing which has moslty passed me by - had a few earlier this year - but touch wood they have not returned...although i have learnt that if it is anything - peri is very unpredicable.
My temp control has gone weird too - I also get crawly skin at times - although that was worse a few months ago - but one thing I have EVERY day come wind or rain or snow or sun - is PALPS - they drive me NUTS and they wont go away......the missed beat phenomena is my bane.....
I was period free for 5 months this year and I knew when my body was trying to cycle - it was grotty - the tension was awful - I have had 2 periods this year so far - so we'll see what the rest of the year holds in store.......
On the dizzies - this was my first symtpom - violent off balance feelings - and i have recrrent dizziness and vertigo since last May (that is 18 months ago)
I also have no sex drive and I have terrible insomnia (taking tablets and herbal brews to combat and getting 5 hours average sleep which is bliss) . Yes and i also had pins and needles and numb feelings like I thought i was having a stroke when i was lying in bed
My hubby has come to cope much better with all of this - I tell him all about it - he has been very good really - but it has taken a year to train him that I am not mad or depressed on insane - he now believes me and not the Drs - which is a start!!!
I hope you find some help and advice and support here on PS - goodluck PMing Lucent - you will get the hang of it fine

I had the EXACT same symptoms - dizzy, heart palp's, anxious, thought I was dying...everything. Lasted for about a month. Had an EKG because I thought I possibly had or was going to have a heart attack. Results of my blood work back showed a lower than normal potassium level.
Bought a bottle of Pedialyte (electrolyte replacement for kids) and it got rid of the dizzyness within 2 days! I now make sure to eat more potassium-rich foords - banana's, orange juice, potatoes, gatoraid, whenever I start feeling dizzy or off-balance. I don't know if perimenopause affects electrolyte levels but it seems to affect everything else...
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Hi all,
I am new to this site and this topic is very interesting to me. I am 48 and for several years I have had that woozy weird head sensation that you all talk about. I went to doctors and had MRI's and CAT Scans done they were all normal too. What a relief it is to here that other women are feeling this symptom. Fortunately I haven't noticed this kind of symptom any more. So it must get better with time. However, now I am noticing other symptoms, which is why I am on this site. My symptoms now are, insomnia, crying bouts, iratability, or just plain grouchy. I also noticed a loss of memory and itchyness on the inside of my upper thigh. My husband can't figure out whats wrong with me. Has anyone used Phyto B? Currently I'm using Estroven and it seems to be working but I am gaining weight, which I can't afford. Thanks so much. This is a great site.

Hi all,
Stumbled upon this site about a week ago and am certainly glad that I have found it. This is my first post. I am 47+ with 3 teenagers and a stressful full time job. I have been dizzy my whole life (12 years ago, but to me it seems so long). Seen at least 20+ doctors and been through all kinds of tests : blood tests, ECG, echocardiogram, ENG, MRI etc. but none of the doctors are able to provide a specific dagnosis. Many concluded that I have anxiety disorders.
Couldn't remember how I survived all these years.
About 4 years ago, started to have insomnia. Currently on clonazepam to help me get some decent sleep. About a year ago, doctor said that I have perimeno, as my period cycle started to become shorter, had tension headache every cycle, heart palpitates for no reason, and yes, hot flashes as well. Since a month ago, my dizziness became unbearable. I am not sure whether anyone experience such dizziness : kind of imbalance when walking, veering towards the right all the time, and often I had to put my hand against the wall to prevent myself from walking into it. The dizziness has been with me every day since a month ago. Also, I have cold clamy and sweaty hands and my legs are weak like jelly. Other than forcing myself to work every day, I am home bound most of the time.
Feeling v depressed.
Glad that I am not alone for most of the symptoms. But, I am not sure if the dizziness is an unique experience. Uncertain whether it is a peri symptom.

I hate to chime in here, because dizziness is nothing new to me, peri or not.
As a child and teen I suffered (and my children have the same) from positional vertigo. Certain positions exacerbate and precipitate a spinning spell. I don't have spells now, but would if I indulged in back and forth or tipping head movements. I am VERY careful and don't do these things.
All I can suggest is to find a stabilizing sleeping position that does not induce your dizziness and can settle you.
For YEARS, I only slept on my left ear and never rolled over in bed or a violent and fast spinning spell would immediately ensue.
I don't tip my head back or even to far forward like you would have to do to get under a bathtub spout. I am careful about switching sleeping sides now, which I do gingerly and have beenfine.
I'd also avoid progressive lenses as the least amount of head movement, the better for you and those kind of lenses require you to constantly adjust your head position for clear vision.
If vertigo is part of peri, I am not looking forward to the constant return of these symptoms. I would see and ENT specialist as there have been major discoveries concerning vertigo since I was a teen.
I have read that loose small bits of calcium deposit are what causes the turbulation in the sensory organ.
Sorry for what you are going through. I certainly can empathize with you.

Hi Doodle,
I get the same dizzies too. I'm 47 and have had this for a number of years. My life has been very stressful for the last five years and I'm not sure if the outside stressors or peri or a combo of both have caused these crazy symptoms. My dizzyness does seem hormonal though.
One suggestion would be to journal your symptoms. I have been surprised to find that after my period things kind of go haywire for about a week for me. When I was younger it was before my period. I have also noticed that I have anxiety at night for no apparent reason. I have found that as my hormones are changing, so are my symptoms. Keeping track of everything helps me to find patterns and therefore maby some relief.
This is a great website for support and information. I could not have gone through this without the help from these wonderful people.

Hi ladies,
Thank you for your responses.
Hi Vickie, my current dizziness are not vertigos though I did have that in the past. Usually, a few doses of Cinnarizine helped. The last one was in Nov 05 which lasted for a month. My head spinned badly with slight movement and when I laid down. For that,, medication didn't help. I finally had an Apley maneuver done by an ENT and it solved the problem. It was probably due to calcium deposits which you had mentioned. And yes, vertigos are frightening.
My current dizziness are more like feeling dazed and unsteady in my gait. Even when standing still, my body will sway front and back, and side to side. I can't walk straight, and felt like a drunkard. Sitting down helps, but as my job require me to move around, I feel frustrated. Also feeling anxious that I may lose my job because of my peri problems. Seen neurologist, but no abnormalities detected.
Hi Shakti, thank you for your suggestion about keeping a journal. I do keep a journal, but currently I notice that my symptoms can either be at their worst before or after the period. No fix pattern yet. But will continue to log the symptoms.
Feel comforted by all your postings. Going for thyroid test next week. Have done that before with negative result though.
Take care.

When I was 35, I had a terrible bout of palpitations and almost passed out. I went to the doctor, then a heart doctor. I wore the 24 hour monitor, and had an ultrasound of my heart. Everything is fine, my heart is in great shape (thank God). So then my doctor sent me to an OB/GYN specialist. He said I had severe PMS. He put me on Xanax, which made all my symptoms worse. The palpitations, woozy-headed feeling... Then I started having the woozy-headed palpitations, and sweating and shaking while driving. Needless to say, I don't drive too much anymore. I am so scared to have another panic attack while driving. The doctor has me on Lexapro now. Then in June, I had a PAP smear, it came back normal. I went to work the next day, had the palpitations, and woozy-headed feeling to the point where I had to go home. That very same evening I started my period. Coincidence? I think not. I had been trying to tell my stupid doctor since the first time that they always seem to happen around my period. Anyway, my July period should have due on the 5th. I didn't start. I was 3 weeks late, then went to the doctor and had a pregnancy test done. I was scared to death! Pregnant at 44

Negative! Whew! Then I started spotting a little pinkish, the the brownish discharge, like what you'd have at the end of your period, since then, I have been bleeding heavy for 3 weeks, and now I have insomnia, too. My doctor has been telling me from day one that I am too young to be going through peri and/or menopause. All of this started when I was 35, I'm now 44. Now he says because I don't have hot flashes that it may or may not be menopause.

Men!

tesstruheart,
Your post struck a chord with me. Why are Doctors so reluctant to consider perimenopause unless a woman is in her late 40s or is having hot flashes? Most women I know ( and certainly many on these boards) are proof positive that this can all start as early as your 30s. I started having very heavy cycles and irregular periods at 37. By the time I hit 40, 4 yrs ago, I started having insomnia, palpitations, hotflashes, anxiety - you name it!
I went to the ER twice with my heart racing and surges of heat and when I asked if it could be hormonal they said - no, you are too young!
It wasn't until I say my OBGYN, who said it ALL sounded hormonal.
Unlike so many other doctors he said MOST women start experiencing changes in their late 30s and early 40s.
Just had to rant a little!

Hi ladies,
I'm 47 and reflect back that many odd sensations I've had over the years from racing heart to the idzzies to anxiety and depression to the hot flashes in the night (although thankfully, they seemed to have relented quickly although there's still time LOL) are most likely correlated to my dear hormones....
As for doctors ignoring or reluctant to blame our symptoms on menopause, I think it's because they really don't know to the degree that hormones wreck havoc on us and are trained to diagnois and treat. With peri menopause, symptoms can be so random and fleeting that pinpointing the origin is too difficult ....so, we're patted on the arm, handed some AD or xanax and told to go home.......brings to mind the Rolling Stones somg titled "Mother's Little Helper"........me thinks Mick was living with a menopausal mother or grandmother when he wrote this one....the lyrics:
What a drag it is getting old
Kids are different today,
I hear evry mother say
Mother needs something today to calm her down
And though shes not really ill
Theres a little yellow pill
She goes running for the shelter of a mothers little helper
And it helps her on her way, gets her through her busy day
Things are different today,
I hear evry mother say
Cooking fresh food for a husbands just a drag
So she buys an instant cake and she burns her frozen steak
And goes running for the shelter of a mothers little helper
And two help her on her way, get her through her busy day
Doctor please, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old
Men just arent the same today
I hear evry mother say
They just dont appreciate that you get tired
Theyre so hard to satisfy, you can tranquilize your mind
So go running for the shelter of a mothers little helper
And four help you through the night, help to minimize your plight
Doctor please, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old
Lifes just much too hard today,
I hear evry mother say
The pusuit of happiness just seems a bore
And if you take more of those, you will get an overdose
No more running for the shelter of a mothers little helper
They just helped you on your way, through your busy dying day
Hugs,
Momz

I've had most of the symptoms you are describing, and then some, and they have not been pleasant. I truly feel for you, believe me. I get an off tilt feeling when I'm driving at a high speed - like 55 - I drive much slower at times because of this. Last year it was just horrible. I've also had a daily tension headache for 4 months now - been through 4 medications, I've had CAT scan, MRI, blood work, had my ears checked and my eyes checked. The most they found was that I'm prediabetic (diabetes is in my family). I'm going to see a headache specialist at Columbia University in NYC on Monday. I hope you start to feel better soon. Keep us posted. Karen
