I had my 4th D&C on friday. I had bleeding for almost 5 weeks. This type of bleeding pattern has happened many times before and Prometrium, Provera and Aygestin do not help anymore. I am 54 years old and still going thru peri. My gyne suggested giving me Depo-Provera shots. They are supposed to lower the estrogen levels. I read the side effects and they aren't too pleasant...including weight gain, migraines and irregular bleeding. Has anyone tried this and have any luck with Depot Provera? dry.gif

Aurora,

That was one of the first things I tried when all this peri nonsense started. My periods were all over the place and at the time,no doctor ever suggested peri. He just told me it was "part of getting older".
I was on the depo for about a year and the only side effect I had from it was the my period went away completely after about the 2nd shot. It was wonderful!
Of course, since then they have also discovered that being on the depo for any length of time can really leach the calcium from your bones and help cause osteoporosis so I would definitely check with your doc about calcium supplements if you decide to get the shots.
My sister took them for awhile too and she gained 30 lbs so it can affect everyone differently. Sometimes you just need to keep trying things to see what works for you!

Good luck!

Aurora44,
My daughter has used the depo-provera shots for several years. The only side effects she has experienced with them is the migraine headache for a day or two after the initial injection. She has not had too bad a problem with weight gain or irregular bleeding, this could be attributed to the fact that she is only 25, but from her experiences...I'd say give it a shot. Good Luck!!!

I was on the shot for about a year also. This was about 4 years ago. I tried it to get rid of migraine headaches and it really did take away my hormone migraine headaches but I had a number of side affects wth the shot. They were weight gain, terrible acne, very dry in my vagina. It was like having a constant yeast infection and hurt during intercourse, elevated blood pressure and my hair fell out. I wanted to stay on because my migraines where gone but the other side effects just got worse and worse so I finally got off of it.

Personally, I wouldn't take the drug Depo-Provera. When I was studying for my health degree 5 years ago, I did indepth research on womens health in third world countries. They they were given this drug as a form of birth control and as a result, suffered negative side effects. They even give this drug to sex offenders to kill their sex drive!

Make sure you do some research before you take the drug and then ~ proceed with caution unsure.gif

Its good that you are getting a balanced view- please dont let my post deter you from taking it, if thats what you want to do. Its just my personal opinion.
