I know that after menopause one can develop atrophic vaginitis and experience light bleeding after sex. Does anyone know (or has had experience) if you can have light bleeding/spotting without having sex. It is possible for the lining to crack or tear spontaneously for other reasons?

Noodles, any post-menopausal bleeding should be checked out by a doctor. It's probably just hormonal, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Hi, Meryl!! I am sending you many hugs, by the way. ((((((MERYL)))))) You are absolutely right with your advice. The first few times I experienced vulvar tears, I had everything checked out by a doctor - five in all!

Noodles, I will tell you that I have experienced very light bleeding from tears that I developed in the vulvar area, due to extreme dryness. It was very frightening for me, since I had a hysterectomy in 1994, and I imagined the very worst possible scenario. During my very darkest menopause meoments, which I pray are now dwindling, I became very obsessed with the notion that something was terribly wrong. Once you have this checked out, as Meryl suggests, you will feel so much better - I promise you!

Take care and let us know how all goes.

Big Hugs Back to You, Belinda! We must all try to fight the "fear" monster in our lives. It is our biggest enemy, and certainly affects the quality of our lives. Remember the slogan, "Just Say No"? This is what we must scream at ourselves in our heads when we let our hypochondriacal thoughts out of the cage!

To make a long story short, 16 mos. ago I developed some postmenopausal bleeding. Went for numerous tests (MRI, D&C, attempted endo biopsy) .....most of which were inconclusive because my huge fibroid was in the way. Gyn-onc. felt from what he could see/feel during D&C nothing was wrong and bleeding was probably from stress on fibroid. Went for 8 mos. with no bleeding at all but recently saw literally 2 drops on underwear. The day before I felt irritated and achy in my vagina.....did not have sex... and that's why I wonder if vaginal dryness can cause minor bleeding at times other than sexual intercourse.

Hi noodles
I know its a pain but honestly I would get it checked out properly. It is unusual to have spotting or bleeding from just v. dryness although Belinda says she has had it.
Even she had it checked out. Nobody will be able to tell you its ok except your gyn.
There is nothing worse than worry-trust me in this!
Im sure it will be ok
