This hasn't happened to me since back in the days when I used to cycle and/or run great distances. Sometimes unexpectedly during a long cardio workout I would 'bonk', at least that's what we called it when you hit the wall. Felt all weak in the knees, kind of dizzy and generally knew you couldn't continue without something to eat. A banana and carton of milk usually had me back on my bike in five or ten minutes.

Well recently I have started to experience a similar sensation but NOT during exercise. Like in the late afternoon when I'm just going about my normal daily activities. The first time it happened I was so shocked. I got dizzy, felt weak and had a strong need to eat something. It kind of seemed like a low blood sugar thing. I grabbed some carrots and cottage cheese. Again after about five minutes I started feeling better. Since then this has happened every few days. Protein seems to be a helpful thing to eat when this happens.

Strange experience and not one that I have ever encountered outside of the cardio exercise realm. Anyone else have this happen to them? Any idea why it might occur?

Now I am trying to eat frequent small healthy meal-snaks to see it this will keep the "peri-bonk" at bay. We'll see how it goes.

This is very normal for me. I try and eat something every few hours. My husband has learned that if I say I need to eat, it means NOW. I think it is tied to dropping blood sugar.

Hi 'peribonk'

I have had this sensation although not as powerful as you describe - more a kind of feeling absolutely knackered all of a sudden

I have had blood sugars checked by Drs to rule out diabetes/hypoglycaemia - also had thyroid checked - good idea to get blood tests just to be sure

I have now gone on a much more healthy diet - no refined sugars - more complex carbs (brown rice/oats/baked potatoes) - I eat small and regular. I cant say I feel steady all day - but it is better. I think my peri hormone spikes/adrenaline surges are to blame - but there is little I can do about that till my body decides to equilibriate. Have terrible anxiety/panic - quite debilitating at times - leaves me knotted up unable to eat - this does not help with maintaining a good diet

Wow! I haven't seen this discussed yet on PS but this has been my most frustrating symptom of peri (besides the panic/anxiety) since this all started with me almost a year 1/2 ago! I felt like it was something peculiar to me and my peri. (I should have known better!) It's comforting to year that others are battleing the low blood sugar thing too. It gotten so I have to make sure I've eaten something before I run an errand or I'll get "the shakes" which is what I call it. I get all weak and kinda sizzy and out of it. It's very un-nerving! Like Mele I've learned I can't let the blood sugar get to low and while I still don't feel like I used to before this all started it's a little more manageable that way. But it's a pain in the you know what! So, thank you longskater for bringing this up! Yet again, it's comforting to hear from others in the same situation. smile.gif
And Jadie, I can so totally relate. I too have gained 20 lbs over the last year and it seems like there is nothing I can do that will take it off. I've tried exercising and it didn't budge but I am keeping it up anyway for the health benefit and trying not to harp on the 20 lbs. sad.gif
