peggysue: I think Advil Sinus has pseudophedrine in it (you might want to check the label.) As long as you don't have blood pressure problems, I think it's generally safe to take it once a day. I wouldn't have it continually in my blood stream...I remember back in my high school years, when I was working in a pharmacy...the pharmacist told me never to take an extended-release decongestant (the kind that last for 12 hours)...he said the body needs a break from them every couple of hours.

The reason I mention BP is because sudafed can raise blood pressure in some people (me, for one.) I have a terrible time with this particular drug, which is a shame because it is very good at de-clogging your head when it's stuffed up. Also, it makes me feel all wired and weird...so I avoid it. I have friends though who take it regularly with no problems...

Hope this helps.

Hi Peggy Sue,

RoundRobin is right about the pseudophedrine in Advil Sinus (and Sudafed) possibly raising blood pressure. With me, it also increases my anxiety, giving me a "wired" feeling. Sudafed makes another product without the ephedrine called Sudafed PE. I'm not sure if the ingredient in this product is okay for blood pressure (phenylephrine hydrochloride). Anyone know?

I use a natural approach to unclogging my head and sinuses. I bought a "Neti pot" at the health food store. Neti is the brand name; I'm sure there are others. It's a ceramic pot with a handle and long spout. You use a warm salt water solution and pour the mixture through a nostril while tilting your head sideways over the sink. The water flows out the other nostril. Blow your nose gently, then do the other side. It works amazingly well, leaves my nasal passages clear, yet moist, unlike the dryness that a nasal decongestant causes. It's not as quick as popping a pill, but just takes a few minutes, and just feels so dang good!

I find that eating dairy products stuffs my sinuses. And, it's such a problem because I'm a hopeless cheese addict! I'm trying to cut down though. smile.gif

I sure understand your discomfort, Peggy Sue. It's no fun having a head that feels like it's tightly stuffed with cotton.

Red, my husband uses a Neti pot too. I love to tease him when he's doing it. You'll appreciate this because you know what the whole scene looks like -- I sneak into the bathroom and I say, Oh, can I watch while you use your Neti pot? It really turns me on!

I've been thinking of trying it, but it sure looks nasty to have all of that water running out!

HAHA, Meryl! That is too funny! When I use my Neti pot, and my husband walks in the bathroom, I ask him if he wants to watch! biggrin.gif He always leaves quickly! ohmy.gif Before I started using one, I thought, "Ooh, ick, gross!" One of my sisters raved about hers, so I thought I'd get one and try it. At one of our recent family internet chats, she and I were raving on and on about how much we loved our Neti pots, and now our brother refers to us as "Neti-potheads"! So, next time when you walk in on your husband, you'll have something else to tease him about!

Try it, Meryl. You'll quickly forget about the grossness, because it is soooooo refreshing! Be a Neti pothead too! laugh.gif

Hi RedFox:

Phenylephrine hydrochloride has a similar action to sudafed...it's a vasoconstrictor (actually it's one of the active ingredients in preparation H) and can also raise blood pressure. Actually, when someone is under general anesthesia, it's used to maintain a stable blood pressure (as the anesthetics can lower it too much...)

I've never taken it, but you've got me curious...does it make you feel wired like the sudafed?

what can we do about this head pressure? I am so sick of it, if i hadnt had 2 head ct's i would swear i had a brain tumor, does your scalp tingle too? my pain moves all around and sometimes just sits there right in the middle, one thing that does help me though is aspirin, i have tried everything that is otc, excedrin migraine, advil sinus, you name it, but aspirin does give me relief. Those of you using that neti pot, are you using because of headaches, does it help that, i am willing to try anything, i have never had sinus like this before, my head is always stopped up,but this has to be the worst symptom yet, i also have the burning head face thing, too, thank god other symptoms seem to be in check right now (like gerd) but what happens if it all comes at once,

Thanks for listening cool.gif

RoundRobin, thanks for the information on phenylephrine hydrochloride in the Sudafed PE. I'm so glad to know about its effect on blood pressure, as mine goes up and down some, though I'm usually able to keep it down around the normal range. I don't take the PE very often, and will probably take it less often now! It doesn't make me feel wired like the psuedoephedrine does. That's one advantage, at least.

Neucindy, when my sinuses act up, I usually have a headache, normally on one side, usually around my eye area, and often have an earache on that side too. I don't get a runny nose, but do feel all stuffed up in my sinus area and head. The Neti pot helps a lot, but sometimes I'll take aspirin or another pain reliever to help. The Neti pot gets to the main problem by clearing congestion and pressure in the sinuses and nasal passages. It helps the sinuses to function properly and enables you to breathe freely. The first few times I used it, it felt pretty weird, but I quickly came to love the feeling. Honestly, it's something I look forward to, and use it nearly every day. Look it up on the Internet by googling "neti pot". There's a lot of information out there. I paid about $15 for it, and it's the best investment I made. Think of all the money you pay for Sudafed over the years! And, this is a perfectly natural health approach -- no pharmaceutical chemicals, no side effects.

My husband uses a thing called a Lavage,it sounds just like a neti pot. It's basically just a squeeze bottle that he puts purified water canning salt and baking soda mixture in. He squirts it up one nostril and it comes out the other side. He uses it because he was getting a lot of sinus infections. He said never put unfiltered water in it though. He gets lots of head symptoms from his sinus problems.
peggy sue
do you use a air filter? ive been finding out that helps to..as far as sinus goes
i get head pressure pretty darn bad.it makes me cry alot....
i know its menopause....at least i hope so..
i also have a head massage by my boyfriend & that realy helps to
he massages my head & i push on my temples..side of my head...that seems to help to
i also take aspirn to..i used to take advill sinus. but it made me sicker than a dog ..

Hello All,
I am new to this board, it seems very helpful, I have the same thing, but my head feels so full, I feel like it affects my balance at times, does it make you feel the same way. Thanks

I get the head pressure too, it's not a headache but is comfortable, and it's not sinus. Just fills like my head is full-pressure? Also I feel confused and get foggy thinking with it.. I have started using Head On, so far it seems to help!

Shall read >>but is UNcomfortable
RedFox
Snowmoon, what is "Head On"?

RedFox
Snowmoon56
You haven't seen the commercial for head-on? It's something new, a homeopathic headache treatment... Looks like a big old chap stick and you roll it on your forehead when you have a headache.. At first I felt a slight burning when I apply it, so I send the company a e-mail and they said that was normal most people called it a cooling or warming sensation... I no longer notice the burning and for me it has help! Go figure!
They have a web site> just look up head-on, can't post it here... they also have one for migraines and one for headaches & to help you sleep, going to try that one next.... Not to expensive either, like 5 bucks at wally land!

Hi Snowmoon,

Nope, I haven't seen the commercials for Head On. I found it on the Internet and it looks interesting. I'll check it out next time I'm shopping. Thanks for the info!

Does the Head On work for head pressure around the whole head, only occassionally do I suffer from frontal headaches, like right now, i have pressure on both sides of my head, cant say real pain but just feels full on both sides, I am hoping to try this next time I go to Walmart. Head pressure is by far the worst symptom, I hope this passes soon or I will be sure to lose my mind, i am a teacher, and my kids are constantly wondering why i am scratching my head, it just tingles all the time, Can anybody else relate to this? thanks for everything
Snowmoon56
neucindy, you shall give it a try, I bet the burning or heating sensation is just a distract until we forget about the pressure. Doesn't matter if it's tricking me or not, it seems to be helping and it has had no side effect... SO YEAH! It's really a weird thing this pressure, not really a headache, well sometime a headache. Plus I can get comfused and dizzy.. I was never a headache person before peri, rarely had one!
neucindy
Snowmoon,
Thanks so much for your help. This is going to seem like the dumbest question but how do you know that you are in peri, I have been suffering from crazy symptoms for over 2 years, and last month I finally had courage to get blood tests for hormones and thyroid level and they showed absolutely nothing, so of course dr. says everything is ok, for over a year i have had break thru bleeding, then a d&c and now irregular periods. I was never so disappointed in my life. Every test for every crazy symptom has been negative, i will tell you though this head pressure is driving me crazy, i have never had sinus like this in my life, i am worried ( sad.gif ) about sinus surgery (of course worried!!!!) Any word from anyone is great!!! Thanks for listening.
LoriO
NeuCindy,

I'm not Snowmoon, but I can share my experience. I don't know how most people know it's peri, but for me it was self-diagnosed. I found out because I was having a whole range of seemingly unrelated symptoms and I thought I was falling apart! I searched the net based on some of my symptoms and "voila", I found Power Surge. I've been feeling better ever since!

I am fortunate that my doctor recognizes peri although it is very difficult to prove with a medical test. He confirmed my suspicions and told me what I might be able to expect next. He said the only time the hormone tests are reliable is after your period has stopped. By that time, you can be pretty sure you were in peri! He's kind of funny! Based on what I've read on PS, I'm very lucky that my doctor is so supportive and knowledgeable about peri.

I have the head pressure to, but I think I had this same feeling when I was pregnant with my kids. I remember both times that my sinuses just went nuts and I was constantly congested and "headachy" (is that a word?). I remember at that time my doctor (same guy as above) told me that it was a common because your hormones are fluctuating during pregnancy. Now it seems weird to me that your sinuses are connected to your hormones, but I clearly remember having the same feelings at that time. Has anyone else had the same experience? Gosh, I wish I could be sure this would go away in nine months like it did the last time! rolleyes.gif

neucindy, it's so funny but I want to reply with the answer I heard when I ask the same question>is this menopause?... I swore I would never say the words but they are true>> you will just know! I felt horrible and went on-line to find answers. Plus with other medical issues I wasn't for sure what was going on.. Peri is like nothing else I have experience! Some people compare it to thyroid problems but even with all my thyroid problem it is still unique in it's own way! Plus Peri like to magnify & worsen other problems!
Anyway I found PS, I read and read and thought>> I have my answers! I'm NOT crazy and I'm NOT dying! Hallelujah! (wish I could add music here)!
It's easy to see peri now, but not a couple of years ago. Even with the night sweats and heavy bleeding it wasn't obvious. After seeing my gyno at the time and since we where the same age she recognize peri right off. But I still thought something else had to be more serious wrong. So I went from specialist to specialist...

Hi I am also new to this board, I also have a terrible time with balance it can be quite scarey at times. Anyone have any suggestions on how to control this. Billy
Peribelle
neucindy et al...the head pressure is the most horrible thing, it is almost unbearable. I have it at the moment (again) and really don't know what to do. I get it in the ears as well, at the same time. I find I clench my teeth because of the pressure - which of course makes it worse. My jaws are stiff and it feels like someone is pushing my eyeballs out from the inside blink.gif I've ordered a sinus cleaning kit online, in desperation really, hope it works.

As for knowing how you are in peri - it never ocurred to me until I found this site!
neucindy
Do you think it will ever let up again, I need a good day soon, Monday was my last one, Tuesday and Wed. were killers. I could barely function. I can only hope that things will get better soon. Laying down is my best bet. I know exercise is important but who can do that when you are so off balance. I feel like I am going to fall down all of the time. Next week is spring break and I of course am dreading it, I will extra time to dwell on it and that only makes thing worse for me.
I tried that Head ON, makes your forehead feel good, I am game for anything.
I thought gerd was bad, but this is horrible. I wish some sort of OTC would work!!!!

Hi ladies,
Some mornings I try waking up with a headache. I try to close my eyes and make it go away by thinking of something pleasurable. Sometimes it does go away...but when it doesn't I know and its really a sickening one I know it's a migraine. I take Relpax for mine and they go away in 30mins. Otherwise, I try Excedrin for migraines. It works pretty quick also.

Maybe this note can help someone. It's all due to our hormones and the drop in estrogen, you know?

Hugs,
Gina

Today I am also experiencing the head "pressure." Between my eyebrows. I am wondering if the barometric pressure plays a role. We have a winter front coming through and this pressure can happen in a split second. Feeling fine and then WHAM! Why I don't know.
mrsb76
I've gotten those kinds of headaches for years. My kids both do too. I can always tell when it's gonna rain!
Peribelle
neucindy...I don't know why this happens. Mine started last year with a really bad attack of dizziness, nausea and feeling hot. So bad I was taken to the ER as I couldn't stand. It tailed off over about 8 weeks. The pressure thing in the head and ears was part of it.
Since then it has come back only mildly and only for a couple of days at a time, but this episode has been going on for 2 weeks now and I am SICK of it.

The original diagnosis was labyrinthitis and I was advised to keep doing what I normally do because my brain (HAHA) would adapt and take on the new balance. If you can keep on functioning, albeit slower than usual, I think it does help with the off balance thing. As for the head pressure well, if someone could tell me what to do I'd do it like a shot to be rid of this.

I've read that sinus problems could cause it, also neck problems. Quite honestly I just don't know.
I sympathise with you my friend, I wish I could do more than that and take this away for both of us.

This is for everyone suffering head pressure. I was having extreme difficulty the last 2 weeks with this feeling like I have a tight cap on my head. I was on high bp medication and I called the doctor several times about what I was feeling. He told me to stop it this past Monday. I had to leave work yesterday I felt so bad with this pressure in my head and headaches. He told me people suffering with tension headaches often describe that feeling. He took my bp and it was 128/80 something. My blood pressure has been spiking for the past six months since - coincidentally I found out I was in perimenopause and he said it could be from that. Or, maybe it was the bp medication - which is what I thought. He said the feeling would subside. I could take an over the counter medication for migranes (Excedrin or Tylenol for migranes or something). He said the bp meds should have been out of my system if I've been off of it since Monday. Well, I came home and found a web site where people post their side effects from this medication (which I brought all of the side effects to the doctor with me and told him that's what I was feeling) and many were going through the same thing. The point of my post is - if your on medication of any kind, make sure that's not the issue. I've been having a terrible time functioning because of this and hope to feel better soon.

Thanks for reading.
