With all the crazy bleeding of perimenopause and periods that get closer together, I am wondering what some of you do to have sex while having a period.

Is it practical to be fitted for a diaphragm in the hopes it would hold back the flow somewhat so there would be less of a mess having sex during this time.

I am unbelievably aroused just before and during my period, but certain days can be so messy.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

The one time I tried having sex during a period my husband got an infection...so I guess it wasn't right for us.   He had to go get antibiotics....

I have a friend who just uses a lot of towels on the sheets to keep from making a mess.   It's not a topic I bring up with many people....

For me I always had so many cramps and discomfort that sex was last on my mind.   I did have more desire right after the period was over...at the same time I was depressed....what a combination..

knitmama 2002,I have seen a product on the shelf at the drugstore that is a sort of cup that is to be used during a period. It's an alternative to pads or tampons.  I have never used them, so I cannot attest to how safe are (e.g., toxic shock syndrome) or to how well they perform.

I bought one of the "cups" to try out.. they are called INSTEAD. Supposedly very safe, nontoxic with no latex involved. They require a bit of practice to get used to correct insertion and removal for emptying out. I am not yet practiced at it. Also there are natural sea sponges available, which purportedly make sex during bleeding much less messy.

I, too, tried the cups for menstrual flow.  If you've ever used a diaphragm for birth control you are already well-versed in how these things work.  The cups go a long way towards improving the esthetics of physical relations during unanticipated menstrual flow -- not uncommon in menopausal women.  My significant other didn't notice a thing.
