I have been in perimenopause for 14 years! It amazes me how many symptoms can
come and go. I now have a new symptom of nausea and was wondering if this is
connected to low or high estrogen? I bought some ginger and thought this would
help. It has not. Any other ideas to combat nausea? I hope I am near menopause
because I will be 50 soon and want some quality of life back.
Any tips for nausea would be appreciated.

Hi Ice,
Peppermint tea or just plain old peppermint extract in hot water with a teaspoon of sugar. I find it very calming on the nausea. Also really pay attention to what triggers it the most. I was very surprised to find that suddenly I couldnt stomach different foods that for years havent been a bother to me. I am a cheese aholic....the older and the stronger the better....not anymore!! It was almost like waking up one day pregnant........and going right off certain foods.
Also try to avoid drinking cold water.....this seems to make the nausea worse I find. Hope it settles down for you soon!

This is my first post so I hope I'm "on board" correctly!
I had to respond to the post(s) about nausea. I'm 49 1/2 and am perimenopausal. No periods for the last 3 months and hormonal blood tests show I'm in the post menopasual range for LH level. That said, it's been quite a year and a half! From consistent pains in my left side that resulted in a visit to ER and then subsequent colonoscopy, endoscopy, barium enema, CAT scans, etc.... all were "fine" (thankfully) yet the pain/heaviness continued. Got some relief with acupunture and now the last 2 months, nausea has been a "new" component to many of my days. I could find little information about menopause/perimenpause and nausea until I found Power Surge. What a relief!
My nausea sometimes lasts all day and night and other times only in the morning. I've been woken up in the middle of the night by "nausea out of the blue" that is then usually accompanied by dizziness and sensations of imbalance. I truly thought I was losing my mind (and health)! My doctor at the time said there is/was no connection between menopause and nausea but I knew there was a connection indeed - in my body! An interesting sidenote is that I also have leg pains when I'm nauseous .... in my hamstrings, my inner thighs and down the front of my legs to the knees. It feels muscle in location and almost always accompanies the nausea. Again, "no connection" was the response by my doctor. My nausea reached levels that another doctor thought I might have parasites and has had me on bottled water for the past 2 weeks. I'm on bottled water and the nausea has returned the past 3 days accompanied by horrific stomach aches .... I remain 90% sure these are all tied to hormones. I will persue a consult on the parasite issue - just to be sure, esp with the intense stomach ache that has maintained for the past 3 days. But, I KNOW it has to have hormonal ties ... it's too coincidental!
I have found that eating dry saltines before getting out of bed is very helpful. I also keep saltines at my desk at work for nibbling. Yes, I too have lost weight because of the nausea.
Has anyone else had intense stomach aches and/or side pain/heavines - with our without nausea?
I am grateful to find this forum and look forward to navigating through it all! I think it is So important that we each and all know that we're not alone in this journey and that we can and need to support each other along the way!

Do you have anxiety? I have had stomach pain in the past caused by anxiety. It can be intense and affect my whole intestinal track also.
As for side pain, I have that too, although it is more on the side of my chest versus the side of my abdominal area. Hard to believe this is a peri symptom, but after all the scans and everything I've been through with the doctors and everything being "normal", I have nothing else to attribute that too.

Welcome Kathleent to Powersurge! You will find a lot of excellent information here.
I have started skipping periods and that is when I noticed the nausea. I think de-
clining/fluctuating hormones can create many strange symptoms. I also get stomach
aches. Like a strange hollow sensation in the pit of my stomach. Feel like I am going
to have a period but it is a phantom one.
What gets me is no other woman in my family has gone through perimenopause
like I have. My sisters, mother, aunts, and grandmothers seem to have breeze
through it all. My 84 year old grandmother is working full time, hikes, square
dances, plans church outtings, and feels like a million bucks! If it wasn't for
PowerSurge I would probably be in a mental institution feeling very much alone.
This forum is great to excange information on what is on your mind and what
issues you might have in common. The emotional support is wonderful. Just want
to let you know you are not alone with nausea and stomah aches.

I know what you mean. My entire family--aunts, mother, grandmother, cousins and sisters--just look at me like I am crazy when I have to pause for a flash, or a cramp, and try to laugh it off with"you girls know what I mean".
Most often it is SOOOO lonely. My best support is my Mom-in-law, who is 80, and claims to have "just ignored" THAT TIME. But, she lets me get it out of my system, wags her head and wonders how Honey can possibly put up with me!
(She's just kidding, but still, she lets me vent---best girlfriend I have!)
Jacquie-she is a Red-Hatter, and I made her a hand-beaded and feathered bonnet for Christmas last year. She has worn it once, because they don't have ""SPECIAL""occasions very often. How can I convince her to make it her everyday RedHat? The crown is beaded, and there is a "boa" of purple and red around the base, not like there's a train or anything! (Quite tasteful was my aim!)

Mine can be triggered by anxiety but more often as a warning that I'll get a hot flash.
Like I said before I think older ladies may have had it easier because there is more estrogen in our meat, milk and even water (or why have male fish got traces of female thingys in them).
We're the baby boomers going through meno having eaten "messed about" food

I am currently experiencing the nausea. Sometimes I just feel a bit queasy. I don't throw up but just feel like I could. I think it's just another symptom (among many) but I must admit at times I just feel like I could spend the whole day in bed. I wish I could just fast forward and be done with this. For me it's been one thing after another and none of my symptoms have totally disappeared they just wax and wane....not bad for a week or two then they flare up. Hang in there.....do we really have any choice??

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post about nausea, stomach cramps, etc. What a relief! I am grateful you each took the time to share your experiences and stories! No nausea today for me (hurray) but my stomach and left side remain "tight and heavy feeling". My leg/muscle cramps are not here today either (hurray) ... and thus, each day begins anew!
I went to our local food coop and purchased progest - has anyone tried this with good results or otherwise? A nurse friend also recommended some digestive enzymes and a probiotic to help in my stomach cramps/heaviness. I'm hopeful they will work as well.
Again, I thank you so much and look so forward to surfing this site for support and help - a TRUE oasis for me! My mother says she "sailed" through menopause with a couple of hot flashes and then just stopped her periods -so I assumed it'd be similar for me! I do wonder if mine is different too because I have never been pregnant ... has anyone heard anything about this impacting one's menopause journey?

Katheent, welcome to PS hun,..and to reply to your question about being pregnant or not having any difference,?... I havent heard anything, I can share with you my experience, I have had 6 pregnancies and 6 children,..and this has been one ride Baby..
My mother has had 5 pregnancies and 5 children, and hardly any problems thru meno she says...

You are SO right. A friend of mine who is 86 NEVER went thru all this stuff I am and she is contributing it to the foods we eat today. Go figure! Anybody read the book " This Poisoned Planet"? Can't remember who the author is BUT after you read it - you won't want to eat anything again (haha)!

I have had horrible nausea at different times during the peri and now the post. I found two wonderful teas that are very helpful with taking it away. You can find them in the healthfood stores but also alot of supermarkets. Traditional Medicinals is the one that makes them and I have used Organic Chamomile herbal calmative and digestive tea and the second is Ginger Aid. The Ginger Aid taste horrible but does the trick and that is the first one I found. Then I found the Organic Chamomile and the taste is much better and does a great job as well. Hope this helps.

Hi everybody! I'm new to this site. I'm 46 and have been having perimenopausal symptoms for at least six years now. About a year ago I had a spell of nausea/queasiness and dizziness or light-headedness that must have lasted for six weeks or more pretty much non-stop. I had zero appetite - I lost a lot of weight and was absolutely miserable the entire time. My GP told me right off the bat he thought it was hormones, and I believe he was right. He gave me a prescription for Levsin which is just a digestive system tranquilizer and it did help some. I also found ginger to be a little bit helpful but it caused my gastric reflux and acid problem to flare up. I ended up in desperation going to an after-hours clinic early one Saturday morning and the doctor there gave me a stronger anti-nausea drug and told me that if we were in California, he would advise me to smoke some pot, believe it or not. I can't say whether or not it would help you, I don't know anything about potential risks involved, and I certainly don't endorse illegal drug use, but just wanted to tell you what he told me. I know that some people use it to combat nausea from chemotherapy. Anyhow, my dizzy/queasy episode ended as abruptly as it started shortly after that and I haven't had anything more than brief spells since then. Until today, I have never heard of anybody else having this kind of perimenopausal symptom other than as a brief accompaniment to a hot flash. I have had such a broad spectrum of strange symptoms from tingling feet and hands to being hot and cold at the same time to depression, anxiety, and lethargy, that I'm sure my husband thinks I am a raging hypochondriac. It is very validating to find other women going through the same things. Maybe I'm not so crazy after all! Best wishes to you.

Just started having really bad hot flashes & nausea. Plus lethargy/tiredness. Going to investigate & try vitamins & soy/flaxseed. Read a book that says avoid hot drinks but this website recommends hot water/lemon for nausea relief. Will also try wet towels at night for hot flashes. The nausea is really the worst-it's constant. Any other ideas out there. Thanx!

I'm posting for the first time today. I'm 46 and my symptoms started about 1 year ago: palpitations (which took me to the ER), EXTREME mood swings, periods 3 months or more apart, and most recently, as of 3 months ago, nausea almost every day in the mornings!! My Ob/GYN gave me one sample pill of some medication but I haven't taken it. It's something very expensive - $30 for one pill and I think, even if it helps I can't afford to buy and use it every day (it's not covered by insurance). Anyway, I'm at work and feeling like I'm gonna puke, but if I go home I'll still feel bad. I'm looking for any more suggestions to help with the nausea. I'm allergic to wheat so I can't eat Saltines, and ginger tea doesn't seem to help.

I also have had nausea. I am 38 and have had my tubes tied. I think that this is what has brought this stuff on. Last year I ended up at the ER with chest pain and have had every test that you have had plus a few more. The nausea lasted for almost 4 weeks. It finally went away and I was feeling good until 3 weeks ago and this crap started again. I went to the doctor and everything (blood, EKG, CT Scan) have all come back normal. If you hear of any good remedies let me know.

Nausea is the pits,isn't it? I wake up a lot of mornings with a yucky stomach and I have to watch what I eat these days too. Seems like everything bothers my stomach.
The only thing I have found that helps is tea. I drink lemon balm tea that I get at a health food store but peppermint is also good for nausea. I have also heard ginger tea works good but I've never tried it myself.
Good luck with this and let's hope it passes quickly for all of us!

I have had success wtih ginger capsules and licorice extract - DGL -- NOT licorice ROOT. I was plagued with nausea 24hours a day - I even dreamed I was nauseaous! Ick! But, now it's more transitory - and the ginger capsules and the chewable licorcie extract helps me greatly. Hang in there. Kathleen

I can't tell you how relieved I am to have found this website and all of you! I have been experiencing nausea for about 2 years now. It comes and goes, usually for weeks at a time. At first I thought it was my Crohn's disease ( another laugh and a half!?!?). But my Gastro tested me thoroughly and didn't feel it was Crohn's related. I feel like I have morning sickness!!! I have it a lot first thing in the morning. I get up a half hour before I have to just to wait for it to pass. But sometimes I have it all day! I just came back from a trip to California and I actually had to leave a party because looking at (and smelling) the food made me sick. I thought my husband was going to kill me! (and he is very patient about my Crohn's). My question is...do we just treat the symptoms, or do we treat the cause (possibly the hormones going crazy??)? I have been drinking the mint tea and taking nausea medication that my Gastro kindly gave me...but I wonder if this should be treated in another way. Or is hormone replacement in some form overkill for nausea? All I know is the quality of my life had been greatly affected by the nausea. I can live with the flashes and nightsweats, but the nausea is the worst!

Hi all, I suffered from nausea when all of this peri stuff started for me nearly 2 years ago. I started seeing an acupuncturist for all of my various symptoms and the nausea disappeared really quickly and hasn't come back. Might not work for everyone, but it certainly did for me! Jess

I will be 50 soon, also. It started around the age of 45 but has tapered off considerable. My nausea, intense at times, is helped by Pepcid Complete. I take it at the first sign. I also sleep on a wedge if I eat later than 8:00 p.m. I still do experience it though, during exercise, so I take the Pepcid before I start. Hope this helps.

Oh thank the lord ! I thought I was going crazier than I already am! This nausea is a new one for me it comes and goes...usually worse in the AM. Whoever said like morning sickness is right ! That's just what it feels like to me. NOw, as I look back I realize I've been in Peri for years ( I'm 51 ). All those things that sent me to the Dr. and they couldn't find a thing wrong!
Anyone get the racing pulse thing that is usually followed by a bout of diarrhea? That one had me stumped for months, I though I was allergic to like 10 different foods!
Anyway, glad ot know I'mnot alone in this because I'd probably have to run screaming intothe streets!

Hi Ladies,
For over a year I've suffered from huge bloat and irritable bowel symptoms; losts of intestinal cramps and diarrhea from almost everything I ate. Had nausea too from time-to-time. The best thing I tried, and it worked EVERY time was Ginger Aid tea by Traditional Medicine (Whole Foods). You drink it before or after eating and it settles everything down almost immediately. I was so bad, I would make a batch and keep it in the frig (effective up to 2 days in frig) so it was ready to drink with a microwave warm up in 1 minute.
I took a teabag with me wherever I went and would get hot water from waitress in restaurants, to drink before the meal (or after). I works!!!!! When I was especially bloated and crampy, I would drink it before every meal and thing would calm down, otherwise, I would just drink it if I was having problems at the moment.
My boyfriend teases me about my reliance on the tea. He said I should get a vial and wear it around my neck so that whenever, and whereever I am, I can just whip it up to my mouth and take a swing and keep on moving!

I like his idea!
(Note: after 32 yrs on BCPs I went off 17 days ago and ALL of my symtoms (so many!) went away instantly, except for insomnia. I haven't had to drink my Ginger Tea at all in the last 17 days. I've got my bioidenticals ready to start whenever my symptoms start up again.

Please try the Ginger Tea! It's so cheap (about $4.50 a box of 16) and it works!

Hello All !! I`m guessing this is an American site by some of the brand names but you have alll saved this English girl`s sanity!!! I can identify with so many of you re the nausea. Being a Nurse i have self diagnosed stomach cancer, brain tumour and coronary but I can plod on with all that now I know i`m not suffering alone. Thanks very much !!!!

Since entering peri I have developed food intolerances right and left. High fructose corn syrup caused bloat, often diarrhea and if I get too much, vomiting. Refined food in general causes digestive upset. I've had to adopt a low sugar natural food diet. As a result I have dropped 80 pounds.
