My whole family has female pattern baldness. I have been using Minoxidil topically for 30 years and have a full head of (fine) hair. I don't want to lose any. After meno, I completely lost my libido. It has been this way for three years. \My doc put me on testosterone cream (applied "locally") and it made things comfortable and I got back a teeny tiny bit of libido. HOWEVER, my hair began to fall so I immediately stopped. Now, my doc is recommending I use the male drug Proscar (NOT for use by women), and testosterone cream. The logic behind this is understandable. Proscar stops 5-alpha-reductase from converting testosterone to DHT - the hormone implicated in hair loss and prostate enlargement.
I do NOT want to fill these prescriptions. I do not like the idea of being on Proscar. Although I recognize that the primary risk applies to pregnant women, the manufacturers are adamant that the drug is for men only.
Has anyone tried this therapeutic combo? Am I posting in the wrong forum?
