Well I finally broke down and purchased some flaxseed oil last week (with a little encouragement from Dearest!!

) and I must say, even though the taste is a 'little different', I am noticing a difference already! I have IBS and have been taking metamucil for it after a MAJOR flare-up in August. It has helped a bit, but I feel like I'm taking 'medicine' every day when I use it - NOT to mention it coats my tongue and I HATE drinking it every morning (talking about the metamucil). Since taking one tablespoon of flaxseed oil every morning with my oatmeal, I have been having regular bowel movements and I don't have to drink a full glass of 'crap' now! I'm really noticing an improvement in how I feel - I've NEVER been regular before, and this is great!!!

Not to mention the health benefits that come from taking the Flaxseed:
protect the body against high blood pressure, inflammation, water retention, sticky platelets and lowered immune function
shorten recovery time for fatigued muscles
relieve the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Diabetes Mellitus
alleviate some allergies
prevent Atherosclerosis (accumulation of fatty deposits in the blood vessels)
lower high blood pressure
treat some cases of depression
improve the mental function of the elderly
help in the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis
improve the behavior of Schizophrenics
relieve some cases of Premenstrual Syndrome
increase the body's production of energy increasing stamina
accelerate the healing of sprains or bruises
ease weight loss
stimulate brown fat cells and increases the metabolic rate allowing fat to burn
improve the Calcium absorbtion
strengthen finger and toenails
improve eyesight and color perception
improve the functioning of the liver
relieve the side effects and stop many forms of cancer
relieve some cases of Asthma
treat Eczema, Psoriasis, and Dandruff
and the best part for me: Flaxseed also contains plant nutrients like phytoestrogens. These are natural estrogen-like substances that can lessen the discomfort of menopause.Sure sounds worth the trip to me!! I'm one that is always leery about trying/starting something new.......but I'm gonna stick with this one!!! Sorry for the boring post....but I'm excited about trying something that is actually showing me some improvements!!
HUGS!

Kleeo,
This sounds like a magic potion

Ive been toying with taking it myself for a while now.I think you just pushed me over the edge.
How much do you take?
Ive been eating all bran cereal, for my irregularity....Ive NEVER been regular and Ive been having great luck with the cereal, its not the most flavorful though.
Kinda like chewing on tree bark
thanks for the info,I'm going to give it a try,I'm even going to have hubby take it too
Take care,

You can also buy the flaxseed oil in capsules. I find this easier than the oil.

Hey Che Che, I take 1 tablespoon a day, and I take it with my oatmeal in the morning, or if I forget, with my dinner. Do NOT take it alone......the taste will drive you batty! It's like swallowing Vitamin E oil!! I'm getting used to it now, so it isn't as bad. I guess the 1 tablespoon is the recommended dose, so that's what I'm going by. Might be just as bad as eating your bran cereal (taste wise) however, one quick swallow with food and it's over and barely noticeable! Not sure if it is a magic potion, but it sure is good for the body, and has helped me become regular WITHOUT taking laxitives, etc!!
Mops, I'm not sure what golden flax seed is, but I bet if you do a quick google on it you'll be able to find out!
HUGS!

Flaxseed oil has many benefits. I have read that is good to take it with cottage cheese.
I took this from another website:
"Dr Johanna Budwig diet
Cancer, Arthritis, Multiple sclerosis, Psoriasis, Eczema, Acne, ...
Flaxseed oil and cottage cheese
Six time nobel award nominated doctor says this essential nutrient combination actually prevents and cures cancer!"
Does it really cure cancer - who knows. But I do have a story to tell - how I came across this.
In July I woke up one morning to find my dog lethargic, her gums and tongue almost white. Rushed her to the vet. After many tests and xrays, it was determined that she had a tumor on her spleen - and 80% chance or greater it was cancerous. I discussed the options with the vet and then did tons of research on line.
I could have had her spleen removed - with a very low chance of survival beyond 60 - 90 days if not sooner - this is because the type of cancer is blood borne and the spleen bleeds a lot and the surgery would more than likely spread the cancer even more throughout her body.
I didn't think she would make it through the night. It was awful. I slept by her side and she woke a lot better, but still not 100%. While researching on line - I discovered some alternative/holistic sites for animals and read many stories about dogs and cats with cancer - and cottage cheese with flaxseed.
Because I didn't feel like the surgery was worth putting her through with such low odds, and the vet had no other suggestions. I changed her diet based on what I read and gave her other herbs, minerals etc to help boost here immune system and flaxseed with cottage cheese. Within a week she had noticably more energy and was doing the best she'd been in many months. It was really amazing.
I just wanted to keep her as healthy as I could and didn't want her to suffer. I treasured the time with her thinking her time to pass was near. She is still alive today. She is an older dog and does have some other issues - geratric vestibulitis - but is other wise very healthy and doing great.
Last time I took her to the vet, she was shocked that my dog was still alive. So who knows. I started taking the cottage cheese and flaxseed myself - try to do it everyday - although I have to admit I sometimes forget, but I do think it is good for you regardless of peri.
The end........sorry so long.

I like flax seed oil, it is actually authentic russian used by poor farmers instead of butter with grain cereal, like kasha(buckwheat). Russian women are known to have long and lucious hair.
Seriously, it is great for skin, hairs, skin conditions since it's almost 100% Omega3. It should be stored in opaque bottles and refrigerated, never cook with it or heat it, since it goes rancid just sitting on the direct light. I like it with yougurt and cottage cheese and it's great in protein shake with berries, but I add it at the end and just whirl it at alow speed shortly. It's also a known remedy for constipation, much better than bran, which is damamging to intestinal walls. I try to take 2 tbs daily, one in in the morning and on in the evening. I buy EV and unrefined with high lignans by Borlean, and once the bottle is opened, I will use it withing 3 weeks. It's better to buy bottles vs capsules, this way you will know if it gone bad, it will have distinct fishy smell, yikes. When fresh it taske very pleasant and nutty, almost like walnut oil. I like to add a tbs to my home made vinegret too. Since I have been taking flax oil and biotin daily, I see much improvement in my complexion and my hair stop falling and grow faster too.

What a great story gelleraruba. We're thinking about getting another dog. Enough time has passed since my narla passed away and I said never again. Kind of like childbirth. lol
Thanks for the info ladies. I've been thinking about making flaxseed part of my daily regimen also. Same with the soy bars and shakes too. I have an appointment with a nutrionist on Thursday so I'll see what I will be changing in my diet first and go from there. I hope she gives me a magical answer to this 15 pound excess of fat I need to lose.

Girls listen, it's a great food, a wonderful supplement to your diet.
It might not perform miracles in terms of symptoms but it's a great source of nutrients and will do you a lot of good in ways you might not immediately see, and it is very, very unlikely to you do any harm.
Any of those 'good' oils can do wonders. I've been taking EPO for years for sore breasts. It's done absolutely zilcho for the sore breasts, but it's done wonders for my hair and skin and that's why I keep taking it.
Flaxseed oil is cheap, it's healthy, it's a wonderful source of lots of good things. To some it tastes great, to others not, but for the sake of taking a couple of spoonfuls a day in the hope it might be doing some good, or not, as the case may be, it's well worth it.
Flaxseed is something so many of us, with our western processed diets, could benefit from. So go for it is my advice.

EPO (evening primerose oil) is great for breast tenderness, and it's sold in caps, I used to take it few years ago whem perimenopause just started. Worked like a charm. But I also take flax and have no problem with breast pain. Avoiding coffein helps too.

I've heard so many great things about flax seed oil and I have a friend who is taking it, so I decided to get some. I had an awful reaction to it though. I put some on my food at dinner on Saturday (1 TBS) and didn't feel very well. I attributed that to just my body (I have GERD and IBS). I tried it again on Sunday (still 1 TBS) and had horrible stomach pains for about 45 minutes, afterwards plus gas and bloating. Has anyone had a reaction like that? My stomach was sore the rest of the night. The oil tasted fine and I don't think it was spoiled, but I'm afraid to try it again.

Some folks with IBS can tolerate ils and fat in general, so I doubt that it's flax oil. But flax oil is a rememdy for constipation, so if you are not, then it may cause runs and contractions. I like it in my protein shake, well blended and never have problem with it. But i east plenty of fat daily : olive oil, butter, even cream , so my body is used to it. If you eat very little fat in general, any oil can cause adverse reaction.

I take flax seed oil every day for over a year....the best to get is the cold pressed...it is labeled withan expiration date. Otherwise the potency is not as good, if at all. I was advised this by a expert Nutritionist. In fact, the Barleans has the highest lignans in it.....I get it at the Franchise store "Vitamin Shoppe" in the refridge section.....I take 2 tablespoons in my smoothy every morning.....however, my husband has a quarter of the smoothy or the left overs....I think I might start putting more in....but 2 tbs. is good each day...you can put on salad, over yogurt or just take it.....

I tried the Oodos oil (a combo flaxseed oil, safflower oil etc.) and i had similar reactions, I think it might have been that i tried too much at first and didn't ease itno it like i should have. I took the recommended 1 TBSP but felt as if it would have been better to have tried half that at first. Sometimes when you introduce something new to your body it doesn't handle a large dose as well. I ended up finishing the bottle and then got the Barlean's brand of flax oil and now have been using that one. I do still notice if I take on an empty stomach it does get a little upset. If the oil doesn't work I use the whole or ground flax seeds from the store and add them to my outmeal, banana bread and other dishes like that and never got a stomach ache from the seeds.

I always had problems with cysts in my breasts before "post". Several had to be aspirated and it was always frightening to feel a new one. At times they became very large. After adding flaxseed oil to a milkshake with brewer's yeast, lecithin and honey, the cysts went away, some very quickly. The shake is tasty also.

Joools, that is great that flax seed oil cured the recurring breast cysts for you.
I've been using flax seeds in my diet for several years. I eat a mostly vegetarian diet with fish occasionally, so flax is a great way to get omega fatty acids into my diet. I've used the oil, but decided I like the idea of using the "whole food" better. My thinking is there are probably many health benefits of using whole seeds over oil that we're just not aware of. I buy the seeds, store them in my freezer, and just take out a few spoonfuls at a time, grind them in a coffee grinder that I only use for seeds, nuts and spices. I find it's delicious on cereal, in smoothies, sprinkled on pancakes, French toast, etc.
Another advantage to using seeds is it's a lot cheaper than the oil. So, for anyone who can tolerate the seeds, it might be worth thinking about. And, that's what my thoughts on flax are!

I have been told that the flaxseed oil is rich in essential fatty acid omega 3 and omega 6 that helps the body to function properly. I have been on it for 2 years , a tablespoon daily in my cereal , salad or yogurt . Taste better than taking alone

. My skin is much better now ,it is not as dry and dehydrated like before.

I just can't seem to adapt to the texture of milled flaxseeds in anything i eat...have any of you tried the Zoe flax and soy bars? They have 1 tablespoon of flaxseeds in each bar.I was just wondering about the taste and texture of the bars and if they are worth trying.

The thing about flaxseed oil is that there is actually neither DHA nor EPA (the kinds of omega 3's from fish) in it. But the body can convert a small amount of the ALA that it does contain into the omega 3's. A small amount only. That's why doctors still advise that we consume fish about twice a week.
The other problem I've read about with most oils, but especially flax oil, is that it turns rancid quickly. Most advise you use it up in under a month and it be refrigerated.
Like some other posters, I grind it fresh (but, of course, there isn't much oil from it that way). It's pretty good if you put it in a berry shake in a blender with some yogurt..

There was an article today on HealthCentral.com warning of an increased risk of atrial fibrillation with consumption of omega-3 fatty acids, especially if you do not have known coronary artery disease. Just my opinion but I think people need to be careful about taking supplements unless they have been ordered by a physician for a specific cause. Little is known about many of them if they have not been thoroughly researched and you want to make sure you are doing more good by taking them instead of adding harm to your health.
