Hi I'm dee, just joined! Found this site by accident when searching web for tongue tingles & head & neck jerking movements. I feel like that hockey player with Tourettes. Been to my regular doctor, thinks its a "nervous tic". Never had it before, and it is visable to others in conversation with me. My tongue tingles once & awhile too. I am 38, had partial hysterectomy at 26, I do use hormonal cream. I do have other symptoms such as the night sweats, hot flashes, all for about a year now. This sudden head jerk thing is really annoying. I'm convinced I have some horrible disease, like ALS, MS, Parkinson's. These were things I was looking up when I stumbled here Could this be menopausal too? My head doesn't twitch it jerks quick & sudden & frequent like someone has a button that is electrically linked to my head & neck. Does anyone else have this too? I am trying to convince my doctor to send me to a neurologist (need referal for insurance). I am going crazy with worry. These jerks came on suddenly last week, and the tongue tingles have been for a few months now.

Hi Dee,
I've never had the head jerks. I am 46 and definitely am perimenopausal. I do have muscle twitching and many other symptoms including burning mouth syndrome. My mouth feels like it's been scalded and my tongue feels tingly/twitchy at times.
My sister recently developed head bob (head moves up and down uncontrollably). She's 36 and went to the ER and was tested by a neurologist for a week while in the hospital. They didn't say it was hormonal but said it was due to anxiety. They couldn't find anything wrong with her and they did many many tests. If I were you I'd definitely get checked by a neurologist just to be sure and ease your mind.
My thoughts and prayers will be with you!

Hi Dee20,
I sometimes get twitches in my head and neck and it feels like my head is jerking, but I don't think it is really outwardly visible to someone else (at least no one has ever mentioned it). I also have a lot of anxiety and muscle tension, so it's almost like a twitch in a tight muscle feels more like a jerk. I know there are some women on this site who have had jerks that are very visible, so I don't think this is that unusual. My neurologist told me he thought it was due to anxiety.....funny, but I was not anxious when this symptom came up. I'm pretty sure it was the symptom causing the anxiety! Oh well, doctors are useless when it comes to peri. After finding these boards, I realized myself that this is due to hormones...that knowledge in itself has helped.

I sure hope it is just yet something new my body is doing due to age.

Hi Ladies
welcome to the Forum.Anything can happen during this journey and usually it is hormonal and eventually dies a natural death. However,it is always wise to have a Doctor's check up for further reassurance.I have had the one eye twitch thing but my head appeared to remain still.
Warm Wishes and keep us posted

Hello all.. I am glad to have found you all.. I too get the twitches and body jerks when trying to sleep, the anxiety, the mood swings etc.. Is this really just peri? I am almost 42 and never thought at this age I would go through this, but I hope to make some others feel better that I too, jerk and twitch and have electrical feelings in my body all the time!

New Friends, welcome to Power Surge!
Dee, I have Tourettes Syndrome, so rest assured that you do not.

If the tics have not manifested themselves by a quite young age, the movements are due to something else. I also encourage you to see a neurologist. If your PCP refuses, I personally would casually throw the word "malpractice" into the conversation. That just might get the ball rolling.
My very best to you. Please keep us all posted.
Warm regards,
Marcy

First of all, welcome to Power Surge!
I can only speak for myself, but when I first started noticing peri symptoms, head jerks were one of the symptoms among a plethora of other lovely annoyances.

I too, convinced myself something terrible was going on inside my body. Not so. I've spent a lot of money at the doctor(s) trying to find an explanation of what was going on. Because of testing to rule out these terrible googled things, my doctor said he believed it was because of a combination insomnia, anxiety and hormonal changes. I have changed my diet completely and it seems to have helped until I start getting the wave of menopause symptoms again, but during these times, the head jerks are less frequent if at all. Keep in mind, peri symtoms are individual. One thing I really recommend is do not google symptoms. Use two sources (PS) and your doctor. Are you currently on any anxiety medication?

Hi!
Well yes I am on Zoloft now because the anxiety was awful and the panic attacks.. I couldnt go out to eat with my Husband for fear of an attack, or with girlfriends. I seem to have the limb jerks early AM when I wake and try to lie there and go back to sleep.. therefore I cant get back to sleep. YES I have had my head jerk too, very scary. I get the electrical vibes too in my hands and legs, feet. My tongue will burn at times, not always. I dont know but I hope it is just peri.. I can live with that.. lol. How old are most of us here anyhow? I ask because my doc thinks I am TOO young (almost 42) for peri. My mom went through it early but she had an ovary removed in her late 20's I believe. Oh I am just thankful to have found PS!!
Hugs!

Bimmergal:
A simple test you can have done is to have blood drawn to check your hormone levels and thyroid.
Menopause is an individual thing. There is no pinpointing a particular age for peri to set in. Have you read the 34 signs of Menopause on the website? It is very informative. Looking back, I think my symptoms started about 3-4 years ago. A friend of mine started peri symptoms at 39.
Always keep good communication going with your doctor. Make a list of the symptoms you are having and take them with you to your next doctor appointment. If you are like me, you get to the doctor and find you have left your brain at home.
Take care and I will keep you in my prayers.

Hello Bella,
I had my blood drawn Wed.. the FSH etc.. will see the doc in a few weeks again, he just chalks my symptoms up to anxiety which it very well could be. I did have a TSH test for thyroid in Aug and it was fine he said... I just know, I dont feel normal with buzzing in the body etc.. I do appreciate your replies though.. I feel much better!
thanks..

I am new to this site and I love all the information, seems I am not as crazy as I thought.
I have the internal racing (I call it) It's like you can be sitting perfectly still but the insides are racing around. I have had this for years. It was diagnosed as anxiety. Take a pill for that.
Lately it has felt more like pain in my chest. Went to Dr. he sent me to Cardiologist, took stress test and ekg and echo. Shows nothing wrong. Have heartburn all the time. Take a pill. Blood pressure won't come down to a stable number. Took bloodwork and everything that should be low is high and the opposite is also true.
Decided to search on my own about internal shaking cause I was beginning to think maybe Parkinson's........
Found this site and said "Ah Ha" finally some other people who share my plight. When I was in my 40's my hormones went crazy and I couldn't get enough sex, now I could care less. I felt better in my 40's and early 50's, now I am 56 and I feel like I am waiting to die and get it over with. My house is a mess, can't seem to get movitivated, tire out too easily and am feeling so old, tired and getting nowhere.
Now what is your suggestion for my next step, I welcome any ideas.
thanks

First, Welcome to PS!
When my motivation was at it's worst I could not figure out what was going on with me...so unlike me as I have always been active. Made an appointment to talk to my doctor about the anxiety, lack of motivation, internal shaking and the thoughts...oh, the continuous what if thoughts.

Dr. tested me for several different things (all tests normal) and talked with me at length about what was going on in my life. He began treating me for anxiety and depression. I'm not my former self completely, but I am much better than I was in July.
I hope this helps a little. Hang in there. We are here for you.

thanks Bella,
I have been on anti depressants and anxiety pills for years so that base was covered in a time when I might have been worse if not for the meds.
The past couple years have been hard on me and I think that is why everything seems worse. I have had 6 family members die in the past 3 yrs, one was my mother almost 2 yrs now and my ex husband (who was my soulmate)passed last year.
I took early retirement last year and so for the past 19 mos, I am bored staying home. I haven't felt like doing anything and thought by retiring I could get a lot done around the house, but that didn't happen. Seems my health has gone downhill.
With all my levels high and not wanting to come down, I am also now pre diabetic, so I have that to worry about.
I am hoping to find someone who is savvy about menopause and treat me for that. That might take care of the other issues.
Who knows, I have tried everything else.

Bimmergal-
I have the muscle twitches, buzzing feeling in hands and different parts of body and am extremely tired. I thought I was dying of something terrible. I believe it is related to hormonal anxiety (which has reared it's ugly head again for me) I have been in peri for 5 years and at times it has been rough. I never heard of peri before this started and I am suprised it can cause this havoc but it can. I hope you are feeling better.

Well it does help to know someone else goes through this too, I just hope eventually it passes! I still dont sleep well and hate to admit it but I take a Lunesta (half) just to fall asleep, then I wake to the lovely body jolts or whatever.. they dont happen constantly but enough each early morning to NOT let me get good sleep. I had my FSH levels checked and the doctor said I was fine, no peri per his mind but I know the levels vary so I want to believe this is why I feel so BLAH..
have you had your FSH checked..

I'm not sure if this will help, but I've had jerking (I think they're called myclonic movements) and twitching for three years or so and was diagnosed with something called benign fasiculation. I get tingling too. Essentially, everyone twitches. Most of us have probably has an eyelid twitch, or seen our baby "startle" when sleeping. All the same thing. In some people it becomes more frequent and more pronounced when the body is under stress, and for most people it will eventually go away. The most important thing here is the word BENIGN. I have had internal buzzing as well, and people with benign fasiculations have that too. Also, anxiety seems to make it worse for most people. We feel a tingle, get worried, and feel more tingles. So try not to stress as much and relax. There's a magnesium supplement called Instant Calm (I can get it at Whole Foods) that really helped me.
