Hi. I just heard on the news that Dana Reeves, Christopher Reeves' widow, has lung cancer.

This woman has certainly had her share of problems over the years. I feel so badly for her. I pray that she will get through this okay.

Good God. Sometimes . . . I just don't understand the whole order (or lack thereof) of life's events.
My prayers are with Dana. What a stalwart, loving, devoted partner she was to Chris Reeve.
Unbelievable.

No!!!

There are young children involved, correct? I believe God gives us only what we can handle, but sometimes, it's hard to understand the balance. Let's keep her in our prayers.

wow ... that’s a shocker She has been such a dedicated woman to go through all she did with Christopher. If it is in Gods plans there must be a reason. I can’t imagine being in her shoes and yes insueml that is the first thing that entered my mind there is young children involved.
I agree we need to pray for her.

Dana and Chris have a 13 year old son, Will.
I was SHOCKED to hear this also. How much can one woman deal with? I will pray for her recovery as well. She's a 44 year old non-smoker. How do these things happen???
The reason she came out with a statement is because the National Enquirer ran with the story today, and she wanted to make her own statement before that sleazball rag came out. That woman has my total respect.

I just found this:
Statement of Dana Reeve
Based on the imminent release of a tabloid article regarding my personal health, my family and I have decided to release our own statement. I have recently been diagnosed with lung cancer and am currently undergoing treatment. I have an excellent team of physicians and we are optimistic about my prognosis. My family and I deeply appreciate the care and concern of our friends and supporters and trust that everyone understands our need and desire for privacy during this time. I hope before too long to be sharing news of my good health and recovery. Now, more than ever, I feel Chris with me as I face this challenge. As always, I look to him as the ultimate example of defying the odds with strength, courage, and hope in the face of life’s adversities

As I said earlier, my prayers are with Dana Reeve in this very difficult situation.
An interesting and important statement in numerous articles I've read about Dana Reeve is the following:
"Dr. Scott Swanson, chief of thoracic surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan, said that researchers have noted an increase in lung cancer in non-smoking women under age 51 and are trying to find the cause."

I heard a doctor on CNN last night say that they are seeing this in menopausal women and believe it is hormone related.
Dana Reeves is a remarkable woman. I wish her the best.

I feel so sorry for this woman. Luckily, I've given up trying to find any "fairness" in this world, but I do not for a minute believe that tragedy is ever according to God's "plan," because that would make Him insufficiently moral. Just my opinion.
I listened to several physicians (I think from USC and UCSF--I missed the first part) on NPR today talking about women's cancers, particularly lung, due to the current news. It was mentioned that 20% of lung cancers in women and 10% in men were in non-smokers. That still means the overwhelming number of cases are in smokers, but you have to wonder why the non-smokers.
One doctor spoke of some women being more sensitive to second-hand smoke and developing lung cancers. But I'm wondering whether some of these non-smokers might have lived in homes with high radon at some point, or even been exposed to asbestos.
The doctors agreed there seemed to be a "nutritional" component in lung cancer, as well as others. I didn't hear the whole show, but I'm sure they must have discussed the air pollution we are exposed to.
Again, I am so sorry for Dana Reeve.

I just heard it as well. It's terrible. She was such a lovely, talented person and devoted mother and wife to Christopher Reeve, especially during the 10 year battle after his accident. She became so involved in stem cell research and was also reviving her singing career.
I don't know if it's just something I'll never have the abiilty to comprehend, but no matter how old I get, I can't make sense of a loss like this. She was all of 44 years old. She died of lung cancer and never smoked. There are people who live to a very ripe old age who do smoke, or who may not but have given so little to others or society in general.
I can only repeat that it's terrible. I started to cry when I heard it. Such a pretty, talented, caring young woman - snuffed out just like that. If I'm not mistaken, she also lost her mother last year to ovarian cancer.
I pray for her children - to have lost a father and mother in such close proximity (their son together and step-mother to Reeve's 2 children). My prayers to her family as well. What they must be feeling.
Godspeed, Dana.

Just the saddest news... Keep thinking about their young son being left w/out parents in such a short time!
My aunt used to say, "Only the good die young." Certainly true in this family's case.
Rest in peace to both Dana and Christopher Reeve. And best wishes to that poor young boy.

I'm so saddened by the news today of her passing
She was such a wonderful women. A dedicated wife and mother, not to mention all of the hard work and dedication to the research of stem cell recovery.
She had such a strength about her and always kept such a positive out look. She was a loving soft spoken person.
My heart breaks for the children...They have seen and felt such pain and loss.As you have said Dearest, Its so hard to comprehend a loss like this.
God bless,my prayers are with this family.

I suspect that the son will turn out to be a wonderful person. Look at his parents. I'm sure they have made provisions for him. I'll bet he will use this to work in the medical field, or in some way to help alleviate pain.
Just my guess, my hope...in such a tragic situation.

Was saddened to read of this strong woman's death in the paper the other day
They were an inspiring couple who lifted our thoughts above the ordinary in an often uninspiring world which only cares for self
They are both sadly missed - I trust they are together at rest and peace
My prayers are with the family
