I was just reading something in another discussion area about no PAP Smears after 65 (or 70). What about after a total hysterectomy? My current doctor hasn't been doing them, even though I've mentioned it. Since I had had a cone procedure a few years before my hysterectomy, he may not be sure what to biopsey. What do your doctors do?

Hi Zelma,
I had a partial hyst...During my hyst. they removed the uterus and cervix...but I still have the ovaries.
Yes, I have the pap smears - can't figure out why. I once asked my GYN and he said "you still have the ovaries".... After I came home - I realized I should have ask further questions and what the smears are checking for.
If you had a full hyst.... I would really question what the smears are for? Boy oh Boy sometimes I question what Dr.'s do - and is the procedure (pap smears) necessary if you had a hyst. - it sure is profitable for them. Oops

...who said that

?

I found this on a reputable website- you can google "pap smear after hysterectomy":
"Women who undergo total hysterectomy in which the cervix is removed along with the uterus do not need to have Pap smears, unless their hysterectomy was done because of cervical cancer or its precursors. Women who opt to keep their cervix during hysterectomy still need to continue having Pap smears. It's important to ask your surgeon whether you will still need Pap smears following your hysterectomy.
Whether or not your cervix is removed during your hysterectomy, you still need to have annual or bi-annual examinations at your gynecologist's office. During a post hysterectomy gynecology exam your doctor will examine your pelvic area for signs of cancer, as well as infections. You'll also be examined for signs of breast lumps. Remember to ask your doctor how often you need to return for examinations after your hysterectomy."

Thank you both! I made sure and asked my doctor today during my ann'l exam. (I'm bad about not asking things or forgetting to!) He said unless the hysterectomy was done for cancer - a PAP smear wasn't necessary. Glad to hear he isn't the only one who thinks that way! I'd hate to not have it if I needed it!!!

I had a TAH in April and a BSO in November, my dr told me he will do a vaginal smear when I have my yearly check up, because you can still get vaginal cancer, it is rare he said, but I prefer to be safe than sorry. If I have to pay for it out of my own pocket I will. I guess it just depends on the dr and what they prefer. Sophie

I specifically asked and was told that although I had a TVH and no cervix I still should have a pap smear. I believe the doctor may have mentioned vaginal cancer but she was honest in saying there is a low incidence of it. SInce I have to have US of my ovaries every year anyhow it will be okay I guess.
