For the last couple of weeks I have been having night sweats but I dont't feel hot. I am usually wrapped in blankets because I'm cold. Is anyone else having this? I always thought that night sweats would happen because of hot flashes. Any thoughts you have would be very much appreciated.

Cathy,
For me, the two didn't really feel connected. There were hot flashes, and then there were night sweats. I might get them around the same time, or might not.
With night sweats, I woke up cold and drippy - yuck.
I haven't had any in about 9 months now - there is hope!

Yep, I'm with Jacquie. Either hot flashes, or night sweats. Never really saw much correlation between the two. I normally get the flashes during the day and I don't sweat with them, I just get "HOT" from the chest up. My night sweats are usually noticed when I wake up with sweat under my boobs. lol! I don't sweat all over, per say. Just wake up feeling......well, YUCKY is the appropriate word here!!
Sometimes after I wake up with night sweats I'll rip off my pj's, throw the covers off, fall back asleep and then wake up again FREEZING my butt off! LMBO! Ain't no happy medium here!
I'm jealous, JJ! Wish I could go 9 months with out 'em!

Hi Cathy,
I have night sweats either 1,2 or 3x per month. It's always either at ovulation or just before my period or just after. I love the months when I get all three. I hope it doesn't get more than that. I wake up totally soaked. Head to toe. Mainly my chest and neck but my legs are soaked as well. I don't feel especially hot because I'm so soaked when I finally wake up. I feel cold by then and very disgusted. lol. I used to get up and dry off and change but now I manage to actually go back to sleep and shiver. If I get up to change..I can't get back to sleep. So I figured it's best to wake up feeling grungy, rather than not sleep at all.
During the day..I occasionally feel warm and ask if anyone else is hot..no one ever is.. but I can't say it a hot "flash". I just feel hot and am usually fine when I lose a layer. I guess we are all different but suffering the same things in varying degrees. My headaches and mood swings are my favorite.

Thanks for the replies! So strange to be sweating and cold at the same time. It really has helped me since I have found this site. Just knowing I'm not alone and there are people willing to take the time to answer my concerns has been a blessing and maybe I will make it through this rollar coaster ride! Thanks again.

I think we all experience the same symptoms but maybe in a different way. I seem to go to bed freezing everynight lately and wake up in the middle of the night hot - not wet, just very hot and have to change my shirt. When I have a hot flash - which is normally during the day I just get very hot - from head to toe, never sweaty. Who knows what the next few months will bring, it seems like the list of symptoms keep growing. Just glad to be able to communicate with all you perio. pals.

No solutions, just commiseration
I, too wake up with hot sweats, throw off the blankets and am immediately freezing. I pull all the blankets around and am still freezing. More blankets don't help. A friendly body doesn't help, and he gets upset cause he doesn't get it, and he can't fix it!

Hi,
I'm a new member, having searched and searched for forum like this. I am 37 years old and have been having night sweats since I was 28. I consider myself pretty healthy, I eat healthy and am pretty thin (granted, I don't exercise much). Could this really be perimenopause? This week, prior to my period starting, I had to get up and change my sheets and pajamas three times/night. This is fairly common for me; I just get drenched from head to toe. Sometimes, I just put a beach towel down on the bed, so that I don't disturb my husband. I asked my doctor about this years ago and she told me to get a lighter-weight comforter. Which I did - to no avail. I'm not convinced that this is perimenopause, b/c I started this so many years ago. But, I just don't know anymore. I have to also say I haven't had any libido for several years either. Don't know if the two are connected. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I have night sweats right before my period. Oh my gosh, I wake up soaking wet, literally, then I have to change. Then I am cold. Right now, I feel like I am on a roller coaster ride. My emotions are all over the place, and then I wonder if I am going to make it through this horrible time.
I am weepy, exhausted, can't sleep, anxious and irritated, you name it, it seems I
have it.
I really can sympathize with you all about the night sweats. They are
horrible.
I'm on BC pills, been on them for 3 months now, they don't seem to be helping with my symptoms at all. Any advice girls on what I should do?

I get these, too. I'm cold but sweating. Usually happens around my period. I also get shaky and scared. Anyone else feel shaky or anxious during a night sweat??
Also, how long does an episode last? Sometimes it lasts a few minutes for me. Other times it seems like it goes on all night until I get up and start moving around.

[FONT Times] Hi all! I too am dying of night sweats. Mine come on in the early morning hours (dawn) and if I don't get up and shower they will continue for 3-4 bouts. I really identify with the person who said they started when they were 28. That is what happened to me. I am now almost 30. I stopped birth control about a year after the sweating started, as my doctor directed me after conferring with a gyno. 8 months later I am STILL sweating and every night prior to my period and then a few days into it. I feel totally drained like I have worked all day- I so want a solution. You all have my empathy!
Oh my god...do we have to limit them to night sweats...what about just plain old hot flashes. They are both hitting me w/a vengeance. I will get into bed at night totally freezing then an hour later, the covers are off and I'm drenched. This goes on about 2x a night. Then the following day my hot flashes start. I've been getting those on average about 3 - 4x a day. This is new. It comes and goes in phases. I'm in my hot phase.
So, I now only have two settings...Hot or Cold (forget what comfortable feels like).
Stay cool
HAPPY NEW YEAR,
EJ

For me the night sweats come with a pounding heart, which wake me up drenched, anxious and shaky. It's always worse before my period and during.
Lately the symptoms have subsided to the point where I get sweaty, but the heart palps and other symptoms are nearly gone.
I'm not sure how it will be tonight or tomorrow or a two weeks from now because my symptoms are so sporadic, but for now I'm pretty happy things have simmered down. I'm hoping my period doesn't come, it's been 36 days, the last one came at 40.

I started my night sweats and hot flashes at about age 36. My period brought them on and they would last about one week than stop. At age 42, they came and never stopped. I am now 47 and I still have hot flashes. They are not as severe. For 2-3 years, my flashes were awful. They woke me 6-10 times a night, and during the day, I would feel them coming by getting nauseous and not feeling quite right. In 10 seconds, I would be dripping in sweat and feeling so miserable. My heart was be racing and the flash would last an average of 3-5 minutes. Believe me, they were intense. I tried HRT, but just didn't want to continue taking them and I really suffered. Now my flashes are very light. I don't even break a sweat anymore. I just feel hot for a few seconds and then it's gone. I don't have night sweats at all. I am a living witness that it DOES get easier with time.

Last night I had the same feeling, but also woke up with an aching left calf!

It was as if I had cramped up and it hurt. I was trying not to go into a panic over it but I can't help it. I seem to be the worst for wear in the morning for about 2 hours after i arise from bed with a dreaded feeling. I can't stand it sometimes. I try not to think of the worst things, like have I got the initial stages of M.S. or something. I'm fine at other times in the month but for about runs of 10 days I'm at my worst with this peri meno, and I'm just loosing it some days. Then by the p.m. I'm feeling okay and wonder what the fuss was about in the a.m. Am I going loopy. Thank you all you angels for the comfort you bring.

Hi Capers,
Your symptoms are so much like mine I could have just wrote your post. I definitely relate to the hot flashes and feeling anxious, warm/cold feelings especially around my period. I've been on my period..(not really a period, just spotting) since Thursday. My symptoms kicked up about day 3, subsided then kicked up again day 5.
I've also had the aching calves that have gone into a major cramp.

I haven't had them for about a year so hopefully they are gone for good. I also get the dreaded feeling that lasts about 2 to 3 hours and then I start to feel better and better until the evening when I feel almost normal, then the morning comes and I do it all over again!
I hope you feel better soon.. Were definitely not alone!!

I went to my doctors yesterday and she agrees that many of my symptoms are peri! She didn't seem to want to investigate any other nasty possibilities however she wants me to have a full blood test for cholesteral etc. She also suggested I try magnesium for the cramps and twitches and said this is very common. Is this what restless legs is about? Anyhow, I had a mixed reaction last time I took a magnesium tablet and woke up with lead like arms but this may have been a coincidence. Soooooo, I have just been brave enough and taken one today after dinner and hope that I don't have the same reaction I had 6 months ago!
Great to hear from you all and thanks for the support and encouragement.

I also read that potatos are very good for something but for the life of me I can't remember what. Perhaps this post should be on a different board...like foggy-brains?
Anyway, sounds like they do help - keep eating them girls. I don't like potatos - unless they're chips. Does that count?

I went to the physios yesterday and told him about the cramps and twitches and he produces acupuncture needles and says have I done this to you!

Well after thinking what have I got to lose, I allowed him to start the stabbing actually it didn't hurt at all. He said my kidney pulse was not good and proceeded to work with that amongst other things. I think I actually feel a little better,(probably too early to tell), My ying and yang are being finely tuned??? I'll let you know how it goes but for what it's worth I had a good 6 and half hours sleep last night
Say thanks for all the replies girls. I'm trying not to eat potatoes due to the High GI content, but I do like sweet pottys. By the way bp is coming down and blood test results for cholestrol, sugar were very good and the best news is my iron is on its way back up from a dreaded low of 3 back in April it's now 14 but dr still wants me to have an iron tablet every other day! Some good news for a well needed change. This site has been a life-line through the struggles, but it's so exciting to actually feel good for the moment!!

copingcapers: I used to feel the same way after acupuncture...I would sleep great that night. I need to get back to it. Very Stressful Time right now. MIL died last week (while I was holding her, of all things...she bled out...don't want to give anyone nightmares, but it was god-awful)...I've had BAD night sweats and insomnia since that day...I can't seem to get warm enough or cool enough, and yet, I'm too hot and too cold. Part of it is just peri-crap, but I'm convinced that stress makes the night sweats worse.
Saturday night, I actually convinced DH to put the air conditioning on (and we live in New England...it was 28 degrees that night!!!)

RR - stress makes everything worse. We have had a bad time for the last week in our house and I am right back to the dizzies, anxiety, panic...you name it. After being quite good for the past month it comes very hard.
Thinking of you.

I'd like to suggest for anyone having cramps to take magnesium and calcium, usually calicum and magnesium in a 2:1 ratio. Take the magnesium until your stool is very loose and then cut it back to where it isn't loose. I take a dose just before bedtime and I don't have the cramps. I just get very cold during the night and have the hot flashes too. I just went off of HRT after 13 years and am hoping to find a supplement that will help them. I'm on black cohosh, Oona, but so far it hasn't seemed to help.
