Hi,
I've been looking through the many posts here and I can't find anything here related to tingling of the tongue.
I've been experiencing tingling of my feet and hands on occasion and NOW, surprise, surprise! I have a tingling tongue. Please someone tell me I'm not alone. I am so fed up experiencing all these bizzare symptoms, I just need a break from this. One symptom comes and another goes. I can't keep up with this.
Thanks in advance for any support given.

Hi Gez:I have a burning, tingling sensation in my tongue and have for two years--not to say that you will have it that long. At first, I thought it might be due to thyroid complications, but now am thinking it goes with menopause. Everything BAD is related to menopause! One thing that makes mine worse is gum with artificial sweeteners. Any spicy food drives me nuts for a while. I have had every test from MS to allergies and so far they have come to the conclusion it is meno. YUK. Don't worry. It is another one of those things we don't seem to be able to control.GA Girl

I have had tingling, burning sensation in my feet and hands. Today it went up into my arms. Had it since beginning of November. I'm 53 and last summer started missing my period for 4 months, then it came ever 21 days, last month 28 days and lasted 14 days. Now it's been 37 days. Is this related to meno?

I am entering this annoying phase of life and have noticed that sometimes, the whole inside of my mouth tinkles. It's sort of like when you eat too many potato chips, but you haven't!!! Sometimes the tingly, sort of swollen feeling, is worse than other times. My doctor looked in my mouth and sees nothing..no surprise since she only spend a half a second with me...ok..I'm on a rant...another sort of fun part of this phase of life...makes me feel powerful!!!!

Making ourselves feel powerful is a GOOD thing, Marcy!! I've been having tingling tongue off and on for 3 or 4 years now. It's to the point now where when it happens I just figure the ole hormones are out of whack! Also get tingling/numbness in the face/lip area. Hmmmph. Does nothing but irritate me now. Used to scare me......but I guess I'm so used to it now that it makes me ugly instead!! LOL!

Hi Gez,
I have what I believe to be geographic tongue and came down with it at about age 48. It is very hard for a doctor to diagnose. I had several doctors tell me there was nothing wrong with my tongue, but I had heard of geographic tongue and researched it myself and diagnosed myself. My dentist agrees with me.

I suffered for two years with a horrid 'old penny' taste in my mouth along with wierd sensations. All my dentist wanted me to do was see an oral oncologist which I did and $500 later I still had a horrid taste and no answers.
Through this website I have realized it is another lovely gift of menopause.
I have told my doctors and dentists since then to be aware of us gals 50+ with said problems. Not one of them had ever heard of it. (where to they get educated?? then again, we know we are the 'problem' patient!!)
First cramps, then kids, then this!! What a ride!!

I am experiencing the same symptoms. The feeling ranges from a burning sensation to tingling to a strange taste. Has anyone found anything that helps relieve this symptom?

Wow...do I feel lucky. I was googling trying to figure out why for the past year I had tingling on the roof of my mouth or on my tongue. Then I found this forum and read this tread and had to join. I have been going nutz with all the bizarre symptoms.
I was surprised to find, but relieved that all the symtoms spoken about here are due to menopause or peri. I guess I am in peri, but sometimes I do not think it matters, still symptoms.
Thanks for this thread and this great forum....
I will be around. What a great support system and how encouraging and comforting it is to know you are not alone.

I've had the tingling burning mouth and tongue for a few months now. I feel fine in the morning but as the day progresses my tongue will start to burn and is even a bit sore. Sometimes it effects the roof of my mouth and lips as well (numb lips and face ocassionally also). It is annoying. When I look at my tongue the outer edge all the way around looks redder than the rest of it by the end of the day. I've heard that hormones can effect the PH balance in your saliva causing this and I've heard that some people have it all the time or like me it progresses throughout the day. I've read that it can effect your throat as well and make it scratchy and feel as if it has a tickle (which I have had). Isn't all of this just wonderful NOT!!

WoW again I am glad o hear this is yet another symptom as I am fighting hives on a daily basis (some days like today they are the size of a water balloon) I just assumed the tingling tongue was part of the hives thing, sometimes it is in my throat as well and I think I am getting sick , but no just something else to ride with.

Hi all,
another common symptom - very strange.
Does anyone experience an increase in saliva - and strange taste, like you've had too much coffee. I've experience before a change in taste buds previous to a migraine or when pregnant. This seems to be happening right at ovulation time.
Any thoughts?

Hi, I'm new here, and this subject caught my eye because I've been dealing with a burning and tingling tongue for over two months now and it's almost driving me out of my mind! The burning sensation in my tongue (as well as the roof of my mouth) started after I began taking Paxil to help with chronic headaches I've been having (she thought they may have been caused by depression and anxiety); the Paxil made me feel too speedy so she switched me to Celexa, which was a little better, but still the burning sensation and weird pressure on my upper teeth.
So to make a long story short, the drugs weren't helping the headaches all that much so I tapered them off. But still the burning sensation remains, after about 6 weeks of being off them. I have been doing a lot of reading about Burning Mouth Syndrome, and some of you may find these articles helpful:
Buring Mouth Syndrome****
Apparently it happens mostly to post-menopausal women and may be hormone related, however at 40 I'm not even sure I'm perimenopausal yet (though reading through these message boards I seem to have a lot of the symptoms!). I find that excercise or working in the garden helps take my mind off of it, as well as eating and chewing gum. But it sure is annoying, and if I wasn't depressed before I certainly am now because I don't know when/if it will ever stop. I mentioned BMS to my doc and she had never heard of it before. Looks like it might take me awhile to get this diagnosed.
Hope this information helps!

Maybe not menopausal.
My gal is 34 and not menaupausal, she has had tingling toung that wont go away for nearly three years. Here is my conclusion and some possible helpful remedies.
Firstly remedies; she has tried backing soda and that helps, about a teaspoon in a glass of water and gargle. I read that topical capsaicin can be helpful (hot peeper). My own personal solution for mouth problems has always been clove oil. It is amazing stuff I have used it on a tropical ulcer when antibiotics failed and it fixed it quickly. It is an analgesic (great for a toothache)and an antiseptic. A word of caution though it can burn sensitive skin but heals like a burn would. I would suggest diluting it with cooking oil maybe 10:1. and don’t use it regularly.
Being a bloke I just use it neet. my sweatheart's affected by smells, dogs, cats, thinners, bleach and other chemicals and if she smells clove oil I’m in the poop. I personally think that emotions are linked to tongue reactions. I have seen a very rapid reaction (seconds) to any known stimulus such as seeing a dog nearby
Other things of course are allergies that could be causing her (our) troubles. Doctors, homeopathetic (sorry), hypnotherapy and a spiritual healer we have tried. No cure yet.
It seems a good idea to avoid toothpaste( use that baking soda one maybe), mouthwash, spicy food and alcohol while eating a balanced diet. We are mind body and soul and you need to treat all three I believe. (relax, medicate and pray!)
Final: a word of caution every one is different and it may be that these remedies are not advisable to some people so consult your doctor first.
Hope this is a help ……adriani

I was very lucky today to run across this web site in google today while I was looking for what could be causing me to have a tingling tongue for the past several month. I am a nurse and could not imagine what was wrong. I had already been to one doctor thinking I had low calcium since I have had a parathyroid removed and thought I had low calcium. my calcium was normal and did not know what it could be. Has anyone tried R Alpha Lipoic Acid. I read about it on the internet and wonder if anyone has used it and if it is effective for burning mouth symtoms( BMS).
thanks

Here's an interesting article on Burning Mouth Syndrome.
http://www.ohiohealth.com/healthreference/...ategory=diseaseI have had problems with symptoms similar to BMS for several years, they chalk mine up to a neurological problem.
A small dose of Klonopin (.25 mg) seems to ease my symptoms when they get really distracting.
Well, I guess I can add this to the list of symptoms over the past few years. Last night after rinsing w/mouth wash, I thought my mouth was on fire (this was the first time I felt that way). Then today my tongue has that feeling and now the inside lower lip.
All I can chalk it up to is hormones!!!
FUN!

Hi,
I remember posting this thread a long time ago! Thank goodness I dont have the tingling tongue anymore but I do remember feeling despondent at the time, because I couldnt find anything related when I searched the archives.
Sorry that youre having this symptom. If it helps, it does go away, eventually.
Its not a pleasant symptom, but its comforting to know that its likely to be caused by hormonal fluctuations. I hope some of you have found some relief.

Hi Teejay,
Its hard to be exact about the duration but roughly, I would guess about 4 months. It really used to bother me so I know how you feel. I also remember getting this strange cold sensation inside my mouth too and that still occurs periodically.
I hope this helps.

Gez,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I think I am at the peak of my peri symptoms (started peri last summer and had major symptoms around Feb). I think the burning mouth started in May and I still have it. I feel like peri made my nevous system just go haywire. Last month around the time of my period I thought I was going to explode, this month has been much better. I just hope there is light at the end of the tunnel. Have a good weekend!

For those of you that have or have had this symptom, have you tried treatment for acid reflux? How do you tell the difference between reflux and burning mouth syndrome? I have had a sour, metallic taste with occasional burning at the back of my throat and edges of my tongue for several months. The acid inhibiting medicines aren't very effective. I've been assuming it's reflux, but after reading here, I'm not so sure.

Hi,
I've had acid reflux for years and it is quite different than what I am experiencing now. The burning mouth makes me feel like I've scalded my tongue and the roof of my mouth and tongue feel sore. I also get numb lips on ocassion. It's not bad in the morning but gets progressively worse as the day goes on. I also feel more pain (scalding) around the outer edges and tip of my tongue than I do towards my throat. My tongue becomes red around the outer edges. You message was good for thought. I'm sure many people have both and both can irritate the throat and give the bad taste.

I've had a sore mouth (like it had had a skin peel) and burning tip of my tongue but don't suffer from acid reflux (touch wood).
I think Lady B suggested something for this on another similar thread. A mild solution of salt water rinse may be helpful.

Hey Kids!
Do a google for -
* Helicobactor - H. pylori bacteria (very nasty little critter and common) causes all sorts of problems including reflux, ulcers and possibly stomach cancer.
* Espartam (artificial sweeteners - man made poison!) used widely in sweets production including most chewing gum, berocca (daily vitamins), cold and throat lozengers/lollies, quick eze (antacids) etc etc etc - check the ingredients in the products you use and feed your family. Artificial sweeteners in unsuspecting products are a common ingredient. This stuff is very very bad and should be banned.
Also -
* sodium laureth sulphate found in most shampoos and toothpaste - another nasty that causes all sorts of problems including burning mouth syndrome.
Then there's sick house syndrome ~ everything from your carpet, curtains, granite bench tops, non stick cookware, asbestos, etc. Omissions, micro waves, radio waves, radiation, airborn everything, flouride in our water and world war three is in progress......I could go on and on and on.......
*STRESS is another cause of most medical conditions...
as is a lot of medications that your doctor prescribes creating a cycle of never ending illness.
Wanna know anything - google it. Guarranteed to depress the **** outa ya.

Burning mouth syndrome, and stomach too? I am having symptoms similar to those described for BMS, but am also having nasty gnawing stomach aching. I have been tested for H Pylori, nope, but do have excess stomach acid. PPI meds like Nexium have not helped at all. I've dealt with heartburn for years, and this weird burning is not the same. Its going on 4 months now, driving me crazy. I am beginning menopause, so BMI caught my attention, but I have not seen any information about stomach involvement. Anyone else?
Meryl
Nov 7 2005, 11:36 PM
Computrix, I had that too. The only thing that helped me was Reglan, which helps to empty the stomach. It took about a month to take care of the problem, but it eventually went away. You're not digesting your food properly. You might also try a probiotic, which reinforces the good bacteria in your stomach. If you want to know what I use, send me a PM and I'll send you the information on it.

I have been having this problem for about three weeks now, just before Christmas. I had had allergies and sneezing and been sleeping with my mouth open, so I figured it had something to do with that. It gets better then starts up again. Now that I have read this could be a menopause symptom (I am 45), my thought is "You have got to be kidding me!"
This whole perimenopausal thing just keeps getting better and better! I am beginning to think if I woke up in the morning to find my right ear gone, I could blame it on menopause. Ugh, this *****!

Hi everyone
My burning mouth started when I took a green supplement with Lecithin and isoflavanoids as soya products can cause hormone imbalances. I found great relief when I stopped eating things with soya, but since almost everything has soya ingredients it was difficult to do. The other thing that I did that made a huge difference was start a topical progesterone cream/ bio identical progesterone (can get in health food stores) which restores the estrogen/progestrone balance. Soya products can cause very high estrogen levels. A naturopath told me that estorgen is "hot" and causes this sensation in the mouth. It takes about 3 months or 3 cycles to restore the progesterone/estrogen balance in the body using progesterone cream. Not sure if I can mention this on the forum, but Dr Lee.s website is very informative in terms of hormone balancing.
Good Luck!

It's the tip of my tongue that tingles - not really "burns" so much - but tingles. It comes and goes. For me, there is not question it's hormonal. So far, I've not found anything to relieve it but am always grateful when it leaves for a while. Hang in there, Kathleent

Wrote this thread in 2003! The tingling tongue was one of the very first symptoms I had. Thankfully this is a symptom I dont get anymore although I will have weird mouth symptoms when I have a migraine. Try chewing gum or sucking on an ice cube for awhile.
Today I'm dealing with skipped heart beats -- trying to deal with these for the last week. I haven;t had a period for 3 months so wondering if it could be because of that. I am back on the magnesium again
Hope you're all coping as best you can with these crappy symptoms that come and go.

The longer I go without a period the better I feel. I am feeling quite well at the moment although I do have 'off days' or even 'off moments' during the day but I can cope with that! When the period comes again I am back to feeling non-functional and very unwell

It takes weeks to recover --- Strange thing is I went for a transvaginal scan 4 weeks ago and she said I was ready to have a period as the endo lining was quite thick but no period to date - hooray!!

I dont want the lining to build up too much though for obvious reasons and because I will probably have a very heavy bleed....
How are you feeling these days, Snow? You seem to do better too without a period...
