I am so mad at myself, I was taking Climara and doing fine. So went in to get my prometrium (progesterone) prescription after 6 months on Climara. Doctor talked me into changing to Combi Patch and I assumed she had it in my records that I didn't want to use progestin. And like a dummy I forgot to ask and assumed it contained prgesterone, not progestin. I already cancelled one prescription (mail order) to change to this one. I am tempted to try the Combi Patch and see what happens.

Has anyone here been on a progestin? I'm worried about the side effects of taking this instead of a natural progesterone.

Hi Paterd. I'm wondering why you would want to experiment with a drug when you can get Prometrium?

I took out my book by Uzzi Reiss, M.D. (OB-GYN in Beverly Hills), Natural Hormone Balance, because I remembered he had a lot of cautions on the drug.

He said, "Progestins are patented, chemicalized progesterone substitutes. They are not the same as the progesterone your body produces. Unfortunately, nobody tells you otherwise."

"These substances have some of the actions of the natural progesterone your body makes but a lot of disturbing side effects as well."

"Today, growing numbers of cardiologists are openly warning other doctors about Provera. Specifically, the drug is coronary constrictive."

It goes on (and on and on) citing the studies and about how a woman doesn't even need to have clogged arteries to be at risk of an artery constricting.

He points out other risks and says, "So why use the drugs? The manufacturers of these patented, chemicalized hormone substitutes will fund repeated studies to highlight the already well-known benefits, such as protection against uterine cancer. And when the studies are completed, this is what they will publicize and this is what you will hear. I can assure you they will not fund studies to examine the effects of these drugs on the coronary arteries of women."

"Many articles in popular magazines and women's health newsletters express anger at the media for the uncritical regurgitation of medical reports that fail to distinguish between hormones and their chemicalized substitutes. I don't blame the media. Reporters, unfortunately, don't appear to know the difference."

"Many physicians themselves don't know the difference between progesterone and progestins. They haven't been trained to think about options. Many don't even know that natural progesterone is available."

"Until something is done, please don't be confused any longer by the medical reports. Progesterone is progesterone, but progestins, progestomimetics, and selective progesterone receptor modulators, are drugs."

There is also the suspicion that not cycling the progesterone, as in a combined patch or pill, was what caused many of the bad side effects in the PremPro study. Your body doesn't produce progesterone, let alone a progestin, every single day. You only need it 10-14 days per month.

But I'm sure you know all of that!

Keep us posted on how it all works out.

If the progesterone cream will be made by a compounding pharmacy, it will be bio-identical. I'm sure the doctor wouldn't prescribe a synthetic progestin when you went to her for a bio-identical.

The E-2 is estradiol, not estrone, which is the hormone predominantly made by pre-menopausal women.

Don't worry, if the doctor is bio-identically minded, she most likely gave you the right stuff.

HI AIMEE, THANKS SO MUCH FOR REPLYING SO QUICKLY. YES THE SCRIP IS BEING FILLED AT A COMPOUNDING PHARMACY . I HAVE NEVER TAKEN ANY HORMONES EITHER SYNTHETIC OR BIO SO I AM NEW AT THIS. I ORIGINALLY HEARD ABOUT BIO HORMONES FROM SUZANNE SOMERS AND I THINK IT JUST MAKES SENSE TO USE BIO. THIS STUFF CAN GET CONFUSING. SURE HOPES IT WORKS OUT. JUST WANT TO GET RID OF THE PANIC ATTACKS, HEART PALPATIONS, MIGRAINES(WHICH MAYBE CAUSED BY THE WEATHER) AND BEING SO DARN DEPRESSED, YA KNOW. NEXT I AM GOING TO ORDER THE MULTIVITAMINS AND THE EMZYMES PILLS I THINK. NEED TO GET THE NUTRITIONAL SIDE OF THIS COVERED TOO, BUT THAT IS DOWN THE ROAD. WELL I COULD GO ON AND ON ABOUT THIS. LOL LOL JUST WANT MY HORMONES!!!!!!!!!!!!. THANKS . THE ISLAND GIRL

Thanks AimeeDecorates, yes, I knew all that but was trying to save myself some trouble. I hate calling to cancel another prescription, yada, yada, but you talked me into it. The Doctor even said "there is a patch with progesterone in it", that's another reason why I assumed it contained progesterone. I'm mostly mad at myself for not double checking before I went to all the trouble of canceling the Climara.

Island Girl,
Please let us know how you make out . It would be nice to know what works and what doesn't.

I called the Pharmacy this morning and they were able to reinstate my Climara prescription, I am so happy that I don't have to hassle getting a new prescription. I fill my prometrium script, so we'll see how it goes with that. Thanks so much for your words of encouragement Aimee.

I'm glad you were able to change your prescripton, Paterd.

I do know that until women speak up to their doctors about what they will and won't accept, it will never change.

They say the reason doctors prescribe the synthetic stuff is The Golden Rule. He who has the gold, rules. In other words, Big Pharma calls the shots.

Also, I am just the biggest believer in not taking progesterone, particularly progestin, every day of the cycle. The department head of gyn at Duke Medical Center thinks that (not cycling) was the cause of the problems in the study.

Island Girl, since you say you've never used hormones, be sure to start with the very lowest dose possible. I started with just half of what the doctor prescribed. Luckily, it was all I needed. I would have probably quit if I'd jumped into what she prescribed (I was barely into peri and didn't need even an average dose). Good luck.
