Full Version: Could I be starting perimenopause or is this something else?

SCUBAGAL
I just turned 33 so that seems sort of young, but I don't know what's going on. My gyn just retired and I haven't found a replacement yet (I live out of the area so have to travel, take off work to visit so unless its dire I usually don't). My last pap was abnormal..did the colposcopy and it came back normal. For about 6 months now I have been skipping every other period. Sometimes completely, others I will get a tinged discharge for a day, usually not even the whole day just one or two times, but never any more. Then the next month I will have one that is still light but atleast what I can label as a period lasting 3-5 days, although of that only 1 day is what I'd call a normal flow (atleast for what mine have been) the rest are very light to spotty. I have been on Nuvaring for about a year and half now and before that the pill for about a year and a half. Also, I am cold all the time...the thermometer reads normal, its just how I feel. Wearing a sweater all the time, running a space heater in my office. It can be in the 80's and I'll be cold. This is very very frequent. My fiance is always commenting that my "thermostat" is out of whack. There are times that I feel normal temp wise, and in the evening when I sleep I actually feel hot. Every once in a while I get what I guess could be a hot flash where I feel really hot, face burning type feeling but those are very far and few between. Also...have major problems with my weight. I'm not severly overweight..need to lose like 2-3 dress sizes but I work out all the time (was working out before the period missing so its not that) and watch what I eat (1200-1500 cal) and the weight just doesn't go. The only time in the last 5 years I've had sucess was when I went low carb, but it was just to hard to maintian that way of eating for me and I always felt so guilty with what I was eating. Once I stopped I gained back the weight, but not more. Its like even though I don't lose I don't seem to really gain either. I can eat total junk...I mean like chocolate every day and not work out for weeks and then I'll turn around and eat totally healthy and exercise all the time, etc and my weight stays the same. Could this be perimenopause or thyroid or ????? I know I can't get a real diagnosis online like this, but I'd like to know what some possiblities are so that when I do find a doctor I know where to start.

Hi, Scuba - welcome to Power Surge smile.gif Your island is very beautiful and so serene. I don't know if you have access to an endocrinologist on Andros, but if you do, s/he would be the best at sorting out if you have a thyroid problem, starting early menopause or if there are other hormones out of whack. Your symptoms seem to indicate that there's something hormonal going on - you just need a good medical detective to sort it out.
