Saw a commercial for Estrin-D last night. It's a diet pill specifically for menopausal/peri women. Anyone have any information on this?

I did a quick internet search on this, and found several websites with label information. Unfortunately it wouldn't let me copy any of it (interesting.....)
The main active ingredient is Caffeine.
It also has B6, Magnesium, DHEA, Green Tea, Ginger... and a few other ingredients that have been known to possibly help Meno symptoms.
I don't think it's a miracle pill (oh, but how I WISH it was!!)

That's kind of what I got from the sites. Lots of caffeine. I was hoping someone would say it was a miracle pill, too!

HI All,
I sent for it and tried it. I first started with the regular dosage of 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. Well, it made me ill, lots of stomach aches and I was keeling over. I decreased it to 2 per day and it affected me the same way. I did lose 3 pounds in 2 days. I feel it is mostly water weight. You tend to urinate like crazy. I just sent the company the empty bottle and am due a full refund. Hope this helps.

P.S. I am trying Walgreen's version of Weight Smart by One a Day. I hope this one works. It is a lot easier on the digestive tract.

Yeah - most of these newer "diet" pills contain large doses of green tea which is loaded with caffeine. I say just try drinking green tea - at least you won't have all the nasty side effects.
And really - when you think about it, if these so-called diet pills worked there would be a patent on it for sure and you would need a Rx to buy it and it would probably not be covered under insurance AND would be very pricey.
I think we just hate to admit to ourselves the fact that it takes changing our eating habits and exercising 5 days a week to lose the blubber AND also, at this point in our life, just not to GAIN any.
- Well, have to get my blubbery butt on that treadmill. Oh! How I hate to exercise!

So, like, I CAN'T eat like a 14 year old anymore?! What a revolting development. AND I have to exercise every day? Then do you promise that my stomach won't look like I'm five months pregnant?

Thanks for the input. It always helps to hear about things first hand.

This stuff is an attempt to rip off menopausal women concerned with weight gain. It's mostly based on stimulants:mad:. I got the ingredients off of the Komen.org breast cancer site where there was a discussion of it....go there & check it out. Some women said it made them jittery & sick .Here's what's in it:
Vitamin B6; Magnesium 100mg
Yerba Mate
Caffeine
Guarana
Damiana
Green Tea
Ginger
Kola Nut
DHEA
Schisandra
Scutellaria
Tibetan Ginseng
Cocoa nut
Jujube
Thea siensis complex
I know for a fact that yerba mate & green tea, altho they both conatin antioxidants & are good for you ,contain low levels of caffeine. I can drink both with no problem;less caffeine than coffee.HOWEVER ! There's also caffeine, guarana ( go to guarana.com & read facts), & kola nut which are all stimulants.
Ginseng is also an energizer but I don't think it's in the caffeine family. Damiana is in a lot of "male enhancement" formulas. DHEA
should be used with caution because it's a hormone precursor.
I wouldn't take this stuff at all. If you're worried about midlife weight gain, read "Outsmarting the Midlife Fat Cell" by Debra Waterhouse. You can look it up on Amazon.com & if you click on the book icon where it says "look inside this book" you can read about why we put on weight at midlife. To get rid of my post hyst weight gain I got that book, went back to Weight Watchers( which had seemed to stop working because of too many carbs) & combined it with low carb & South beach. I also gave up all refined carbs, starches ( potatoes, corn, white pasta),high sugar foods( including most low fat items which are loaded with sugar), & anything made with white flour & white sugar. I only eat
whole grain breads & rolls plus the usual lean meats & veggies. No more than about 125-130 carbs/day plus weight training, aerobics & walking .I dropped 20 lbs & have 10 more to go !

I have also been looking inot those pilss and have made the same conclusion-caffeine caffeine and more caffeine. I can't even drink a cup of regular coffee with out getting that panicky, shaky feeling, how can these people take these supplements????? I can't take any of these and the one that I did buy, hydroxycut with NO caffeine doesn't do anything. And put me on the list of 5 months pregnant belly. I have gained 10 lbs since April with exercising AND watching what I eat and it is very frustrating. I rarely eat fast food, no doughnuts or cake at work, I don't go out a lot to eat in restaurants, or eat late at night. I never buy ice cream, make a Dairy Queen run when I have a craving and control that aspect of junk food. I have gained mostly around my stomach. I am going to have my Cortisol checked at my doc's office.I can't even talk to people at work about it. One woman said that I was probably not eating enough!!!!!!!!!!! :mad:Thanks for the tip!But back to those pills, I thinhk that they do work for some people if they take them and DON'T eat like movie stars but you can't have a normal life and get up and go to work every day and function. I don;t how people do it with all the caffeine.I would be bouncing off the walls or in a straight jacket and the way I have been feeling, that wouldn't be too bad of an idea!!!!!Take care! I've gained the weight in my waist, hips, tushie, and, of course, stomach. The week before my period it looks like I'm about to go into labor. Since I've never been pregnant or given birth, I can only guess that this beached, bloated whale feeling is real darn close. I've either got to lose it, or invest in a whole new wardrobe.

P.S. My bra size stays the same, however. Teeny tiny.
What is UP with THAT?!

Sep 18 2004, 02:46 AM
THAT is about the only benefit!!!!I am no longer in the teen bra section!!!!!!

I am getting my thyroid checked just to rule that out and also the cortisol on Monday. My mom takes meds for thyroid and my grandmother had hers out and I know that is hereditary. In addition to the perimenopause, which I am going through, something has to be up.Or maybe not!!! Linda

I too checked into EstrinD and noticed it had a lot of caffeine-related ingredients. However, I've read about another weight loss supplement for menopausal women called Zalestra, which has no caffeine. Anyone had any experience with this?

I bought a bottle of Estrin-D at Wal-Mart. Yippee! I thought.
But got sick after taking the first days' dose.
Jittery, nervous, shaky, palpitations.
Nothing but caffeine stimulants in it.
Very disappointing.

oops, just made a new post about this and saw this thread after.
i didn't get sick at all taking the 4 per day and didn't notice any side affects to bother me. I think it was a waste of my money but I'll finish the bottle anyway, who knows?

Ok, Are you guys jinxing me??????? I took the estrin D like I did in the past and OMG....
I became very hot after a couple hours, thought I was having a major hot flash..maybe I was but then I began to get jittery and my hands were shaking and I thought I would get sick.
It never affected me like that before and I used to take 2 like the bottle says....
I won't go to one and I'm sorry but ANY pill that makes me feel that way goes in the trash.
I'll stick to my sit ups and smaller portions to control my weight. <_<

By the way, speaking of bra size...Have you seen the Oprah show when these women sized themselves and found out they were wearing the wrong size bra?
I was going to order some bras from Avon and they had this page to show us how to measure and I know how to measure but its been awhile. I thought I was always a 34c or 36c so I measure to make sure.

I'm a 38D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm a freakin D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I always pictured D's to be like Dolly Partons or something! I was in shock for like days about it. Of course, My husband is very happy with the size. Like he's won a prize or something! Something he can brag to his buddies someday."my wife is a D"
I'm surprised he don't want to take out a bumper sticker for his car that says "my wife has bigger boobs than yours"
Anyway, I've come a long way baby! I am proud of my boobs. They are still in a semi upright position. No sagging yet!!! hehe
Had to share!

There is a substantial amount of caffeine based stimulants in Estrin-D, which for many people, consuming high amounts of caffeine can lead to elevated heart rate, increased blood pressure, nervousness, sweating among other symptoms. This is an obvious drawback with caffeine based products. (edited)

I've been thinking about trying Estrin-D, but reading this board has talked me out of it. Thank you!
To Dee: I too am interested in Zalestra. There is a post asking about this, but no one has responded in a couple of weeks. Maybe someone will try it and give us some feedback.
In the meantime, I guess I'll just muddle along. I lost those initial 3 pounds of water with a low carb diet a few weeks ago, but then stayed steady without losing an ounce after that. Then I switched to a 1500 calorie diet for a little over a week since I don't want to stay on a nearly no carb diet -- don't think that's healthy. But, still no loss at all.
I think maybe the only answser is a very slow reduction. I play tennis or walk nearly every day, so I think I get enough exercise.

I'll let you-all know if and when I'm successful. I don't have much to lose, and I've been told it is harder than if I was a lot overweight -- don't want to get there to test that theory!
Good luck to all of us!
