Bruce Bekkar, M.D. is part of Power Surge's series, Man To Man..."Women and Menopause" to help educate men on the transition their wife and, ultimately, their relationship goes through. Dr. Bekkar, who prefers to be called "Dr. Bruce" is a gynecologist who has written the definitive guide to women's health. It's written for men. Bekkar says he wrote Your Guy's Guide To Gynecology: Everything You Wish He Knew About Your Body If He Wasn't Afraid To Ask" to help the average man, whom he says is "completely confused" about how women's plumbing works. This ignorance can adversely affect relationships, he says.

Dr.Bekkar became interested in the issue after many of his female patients told him that their husbands or partners just didn't understand. To help guys learn the basics, Bekkar launched a "What's Under The Hood" class at Kaiser's San Diego center. He's been on the Permanente obstetrics/gynecology staff in San Diego since 1989. It's one of Kaiser's most popular classes, with more than 350 men attending. Bekkar used humor to help guys get over the initial anxiety about this topic. Bekkar addresses the typical guy reading the book in this way: "Most of you probably wouldn't know a Pap smear from a reindeer. You probably think a vulva is a Swedish sports sedan. You know your girlfriend's got PMS, but you'd rather join the Witness Relocation Program than learn anything about it."

Both men and women are encouraged to attend this series together to help them better understand their partners' feelings about this transitional experience.
