Hi everyone I have been a lurker for some time now...have had the feeling that I have been in perimenopause since I turned 35. All kinds of issues....long story that I will get into at some other time. In Decemeber of 2003 I had a normal period. I did not have any period for the months of January and February. My period returned on March 1st, yet it was very different. I bled ALOT with lots of mucous and clotting. The bleeding continued non-stop for 60 days. My OB/GYN did an endometrial biopsy a week ago and told me to start taking MEGASE...for 10 days. I didnt take it as the bleeding stopped a couple of days after the biopsy. She called me today to tell me that the biopsy showed hyperplasia and that I needed to take the MEGASE for 3 months and she will then do another biopsy. She said I was suffering from estrogen dominance. I am very nervous about taking this drug. She said it was a progesterone, that it has been prescribed for a very long time and is pretty well tolerated. I have seen so much about natural progesterone, yet not much at all about this type. Has anyone taken this before??? She didnt think that the natural creme would be benificial to me in this case. I am worried about the side effects?? Sorry so long..looking for anyone who may be able to help me understand better. Thanks for listening! Tracey

I hate progesterone in any way, shape, or form, as it makes me morbidly depressed. Megase is a progestin. Perhaps something like Prometrium, which is oral natural progesterone, would be an alternative to ask your doctor about. Lots of luck!!!!!

I believe the Megase is just a way for your doctor to clean out your thickened uterine lining. My friend took it and did fine with it. I wouldn't worry.

My sister took megase for about 2 months and she said she tolerated it very well. Her doctor prescribed it because she went without a period for 4 months, then bled for 36 days in a row. I would at least try it, see how well you tolerate it, and go from there! There is always the option of stopping the dose if your body doesn't do well with it. But if it DOES help, then it was worth the trip! Hugs! Kleeo

Hey Kleeo My GYN just prescibed Micronor which is a progesterone only pill in order to produce a period (I am still ovulating but not making progesterone). I am taking it for 10 days and then it should bring on my period. Depending upon the next couple of months, I will be taking it in three months time. (I hope it doesn't give me a period for that long!) As my doc explained, if you're taking it to bring on a period, it's because you're not shedding the lining of your uterus. I hope this helps. EJ

Thanks everyone for the replies. I am going to begin the Megase tomorrow. I think that I have been having many other symptoms of estrogen excess for about 3 years at least. Dry eyes being one of the most recent. I have stumped an array of doctors with my symptoms and after reading up on estrogen dominance I believe thats what it has been all about. Thanks again for all of your help. Tracey
