I am now postmenopausal with an additional 30 pounds. I cannot seem to lose it with exercise or dieting and it really bothers me alot. Any ideas on how to get my metabolism going again?

Welcome GB Linda: You will love this site for answers to questions and gathering information from others to help you out. Weight Gain ... My weight gain began when I first entered into peri-menopause. WHAM - 25 pounds gained in about 10 months and I was as active as I had always been. Doctors did all kinds of tests - everything was normal including my hormones. I started to execise DAILY and ate only 'good things' and quickly lost it. As you have been exercising, you may want to check with your doctor and get some tests done just to make sure all is OK. I don't believe in over the counter drugs to reduce weight. What I have done on and off when I need to shed pounds is go back to the basics, and what I mean by that is eating mainly foods from the earth. To jump start the metabolism, add garlic, onions, peppers, and some ginger to your foods. Stay away from white flour and sugars for a while and see what happens. Fruits like blueberrys and strawberries are good for your immune system too. Also, drink lot of ice water with a slice of lemon or lime (no sugar). Try to eat lean protein like tuna, eggs, chicken, etc. I know it sounds like the atkins diet but I've been doing this since I had my first son in 1984 after I gained 60 pounds with him. In 6 months, I was back to my normal weight again. These are all things I've learned from Mom. She was raised on a huge farm in PA and knows food and herbs very well. She was also a nurse. Good luck to you, Tina wink.gifwink.gif

Hi Linda: There was a weekly support group chat about weight watching, maybe it is not happening right now. Also there is at least one topic on weight watching where you can read more posts. I also read that green tea is helpful in burning off calories (I think?). I think the post above sounds good and I use some of those principles myself. However I also have a hard time eating well enough, planning, shopping and cooking when I get involved in other things. I dropped some weight but I am also having more symptoms.

Eat less, move more. Staying away from simple carbs. is a good idea, as they really have no health benefits.biggrin.gif

I remember reading an article that mentioned slim people, generally, jitter more than heavier people. Try toe tapping, finger tapping and leg jostling. I imagine sooner, or later weight will become an issue. Metabolism does slow down with age, although I understand it starts to level, somewhat. Well, better get going on my walk.

Sugar is the culprit for me. ANY sugar, or anything that eventually turns to sugar! I'm with you Chris, simple carbs are the enemy! The only way for me to lose weight and keep it off, is to eat fish, chicken, and green vegetables. BORRRING:( What I wouldn't give for a bag of potato chips!biggrin.gif
