Last week I had the scariest experience, it was like my anger button got turned on and there was no way to turn it off. Oh wise women - HELP
It was strange, for 4 days - I was out of control - then poof - I am back to me again.
I am almost 47, have had PCOS, which is bizarre - you only get your period 4 times a year in your youth - at 40 it starts like clock work - however, must be in next phase - missed 2 months for the first time since 40 -

Hello Chaithere -
That had to be a scary experience for you....when your in such a rage and you feel like you can't get control of the anger - phew, been there and done that and your right - it is scary.... When that happens to me - the first thing I do is...recoqnize the anger - then realize that my hormones are fluctiating up and down -I try and go for a walk or get on the computer and check out the Power Surge message boards, there's lots and lots of wonderful ideas from ladies, just like you and me, who have "anger buttons" - I've also started to have my own personal journal and venting out my anger/rage ...this has helped alittle - I'm trying real, real hard not to take it out on the people around me...although - I think some of them deserve it, hahaha..... Also, when my anxiety goes wild - I will take a low dose of xanax - that helps. And finally, talk to your GYN or your family Dr. about your scary experiences - a good Dr. will help you. Best Wishes....

I think Stacy wrote a nice post, I'll add a few points here. For some women in peri/menopause moods can tend to endure and be exaggerated. Those moods include troublesome ones like anger, fear, and sadness. Many women on Power Surge report this. I think that keeping calm is the right strategy. I realise that can be difficult. (Look around the forums for tips and techniques.) I also wonder if you were getting angry because of a serious underlying grievance. Once your moods level out perhaps you could examine what the need or trigger is behind your anger and seek to repair that problem in your life (if any problem exists).

Thanks for your understanding - it wasn't the anger that upset me, hey anger is part of life, it was the fact that the adrenaline like feeling didn't pass for a couple of DAYS! This was the first time that ever happened - so I will take some wonderful advise from here - what do they say in football - the best offense is a good defense - I have taken this as a wake-up call to take better care of myself, as well as make an appointment for a "mental tune-up", so if I have one of those swings I will have less fuel.
Thanks again

Hi, I'm new to the boards. I was sitting in my office this morning and just couldn't get any work done. I saw bits of Suzanne Somers last night and thought -- let me find out about bio-id hormones and started surfing the net -- I found this site. I just started crying when I read some of the thoughts -- I'm not alone, and maybe I'm not crazy. I just don't recognize myself any more. I get in those ugly moods and when the anger comes, it just scares the @#$ out of me... it's embaressing, too. My SO just doesn't know what to make of it and most times, just gives me a wide berth -- he must thinks I'm nuts. It's a good thing we're been togehter a long time, he remembers when I was younger, prettier, thinner and SANER! I am on hormones and a mild antidepressant, but I'm not a drug taker and don't like it. What does anyone think of the "natural" way with homeopathic herbs?

Hi dancer,
Welcome to power-surge, and bless your heart - you are DEFINITELY not alone... Come read thru' the articles and the message boards, and you'll see a truly loving community.
I too hate taking drugs, and after trying to handle some recent depression on my own, have decided to try St. John's Wort. There's a good interview on the site with a man who's written a book about using it for depression.
Hang in there, Sister - we're all with you!

Thank you joliejacq, I'm going to the healthfood store and check out som SJW. I guess most gals "talk" on these boards later at night. For the record (FTR), I'm a little better today, but it's raining here (that always affects my moods.) Have a bright day where you are!

Was sitting on chair a couple days ago trying to put together a puzzle, and just flipped. I got so angry, started shaking and then blacked out. Came to 5 hours later, have felt great since. Don't understand this at all. Dr. has prescribed xanax 3 x's daily, but still can't slow down. Definatly Towanda. Out of control same time of the month, had a total hyst. done in June. ????

Sometimes my rage comes like a "hot flash" -- when I was getting those, I would wake up or stop what I was doing and think "what's going on?" then WHOOOOSH there is came -- well the rages come like that also. MY boyfriend and I could be having a great time, dancin' and socializing and then I stop and and think "what's going on?" , then WHHOOOOSH -- here comes the rage -- it's scary and embarressing....anyone else have that happen??????

Well, it is March now, almost 4 months after my first post. Dancer, I loved your description of the anger hot flash - it is sooooo on target.
Let me share with everyone my trail-
- begain the revival soy - began to sleep a little better
- went back to therapy - so when the "on button" gets turned on it has less fuel
- had an appointment with a psychiatrist to adjust my brain meds - no luck there things became worse
- found a new gyn who is into bio-identical hormones, herbs, holistics, and yuch exercise and eating right - aside from instructions to drink water, exercise, practice relaxation, cut out sugar and those sorts of carbs, she gave me progesterone cream and estradiol cream (she says I should prepare my hubbie as I might get "randy" - what a thought!). I will let you know when that kicks in.
What I found that works (until these silly things stop)-
- accept that this is going on
- accept that is stinks
- try to control what you can during the PMS times - I know you can't control all of life, but that is not a good time to schedule meetings with people you don't like (if possible), schedule in extra rest (when possible).
- let people know - I work with mostly men and thought they would die the first time I said "listen guys - estrogen low - approach with care" or "give me estrogen or give me a gun" - but they are getting the idea - in fact one has thanked me - he is a better hubbie at home...

Chaithere~~I love what you said "give me estogen or give me a gun" funny!! but feel that way at times..lol!! Thanks for the advice you gave~
Hi to the rest of you ladies~~This anger thing is very confusing to me and my hubby..I can see the look on his face these days..he tries so hard to understand..just this morning I was ranting about something and he just kinda shook his head..funny thing is in my next moment of sanity I was asking "why do I do this to him"
I've been doing alot of studying about brain chemicals and hormones. I found yesterday that tryptophan is a amino acid that raises the seritonin in our brains..lots of foods has it..sunflower seeds..bananas..beans..cheeses..fish..eggs..turkey and many more. I don't want to go the HRT way so I'm trying everything I can to find something to be a calmer gal.
I know that "this to shall pass" It's just the getting through it thats so hard...being able to read your posts and feel that we are all in this together has helped immensely~~HUGS~~

Hi dancer~~I don't know if eating those things will help..I'm just experimenting right now..thought I'd just fill my diet with those things and see. I've just always been afraid of drugs and I'm always looking into natural things to try. I do hear that St Johns Wort works well for some people..my daughter took it for awhile and felt good. Wish we knew just what to do to make us feel better..for now I'm just going to try new things..esp..within my diet..I'll let you know after a few weeks if it works..I hope you feel better soon. hang in there..~~HUGS~~

I'm experimenting, too. I stopped taking my hormones, anti-depressant and Centrum vitamins and went on a new regiment of "ProFema" vitamins, Bcomplex, EstroSoy Plus, inosital and progrestrone cream. I know it's a lot of changes at once, but I couldn't take what I was doing (and being). I started all new Tues and have felt great -- no anger or sweat flashes yet!

Hope it continues..........

Hoping it'll all work -- maybe I only need one or two of them, won't know cause I take them all!! It's too soon to tell (but so far, I haven't "killed" anyone with rage)

:D
Have a grand day -- it's beautiful here -- thinking about burning gas with the top down in the T-bird!

Wow burning gas in a Tbird with the roof down sounds like heaven - we are still getting snow where I am....
From my experience with anti-depressants (take it for what it is worth) - when they help you they are wonderful, when they don't they are horrible. But just because you had a horrible experience with one doesn't mean that a different one won't be wonderful.
I remember exactly how I felt when prozac kicked in (it takes a month) - something happened (I forgot what) and I began to react as I always did, rightously feeling that was the "only way anyone could react". Well, all of a sudden it was like a door that opened up, it occured to me that there were a bunch of different ways to react and I had a choice!
Additionally, every so often I try to wean myself off. It is like getting louder and louder "head static" and it occurs to me - why do I want to walk around with all that noise.
Last month, my doctor experimented with a newer, better drug (wellbutrin) and it was horrible, couldn't focus, headaches, sleepy, and buzzy feeling... it all went away when I went back to my old standby.
I hope my experience helps.
