I just started experiencing 'cold flashes' yesterday at the onset of my cycle and today. I take a small dose of Prozac since I can't tolerate the NHRT's. Has anyone else experienced this? Thyroid nomral. Thank you! Would like to know I am not alone in this.

I feel cold alot too! Usually it's like a deep chill. I'll sit in the sun for a long time before I realize it's hot ! Sometimes I will actually be too hot, but not experience it like that. I'll all of a sudden be very uncomfortable and nervous. Then I"ll realize I'm too hot ! Wierd !

Thanks for your reply. "deep chill" is a good way to describe it. I feel just like that as I am typing this.Eliza

Hi, It is my first time here. I am 51 and have had those cold feelings for the past week. I can be just sitting watching tv and one comes over me. This usually has palpitations with it. I have had an acho done and they say my heart is fine. This menopause has really put a damper on my life. I found this site and it has been a blessing to know I am not alone!!!

Just this month I've noticed the deep chill seems to be leaving me. Actually , now that I think of it,  it stopped once the hot flashes started. I have suffered with the deep chill winter and summer for 3 years! I was just mentioning it to my hubby the other night how I hadn't been feeling cold for awhile. Oh well, not sure which is worse - the hot flashes or the cold flashes!Suzie

Hi suze, just wondered if your cold flashes raced through you like the hot ones do. I usually get palpitations with it, but it has semed to ease up. i started to drink some ginseng tea and that has a nice calming effect on the nerves. anyone out the have the same thing going on. thanks for listening.

Kademaria and Suzie:  I like to liken meno as:  your thermostat is broken!  I, too, get those cold feelings, especially this winter.  I'll turn the heat up, then I get too hot!  I'm sure eventually it all evens out.  We can only hope!

Hi Girls ,Yes, the cold one used to  sometimes race through, but it seemed like for the most part it was like a deep, constant chill that I had - winter and summer. It was like my whole core was frozen. A broken theromostat is a good way to put it!  Mine has definately been broken ! Now I seem to feel more normal in temperature most of the time until I get the sudden hot flashes that make me hot ! I too sometimes get the palps with the hot flashes. Sometimes they sneak up on me , but most of the time I can feel them coming on - it's like a tightening and nervous feeling I get first or sometimes like a rubber band snapping my head ! Suzie

Have you had your thyroid checked?  That constant cold feeling and inability to handle any cold is a classic hypothyroid symptom.  From what I've read, women are four times more likely than men to have this problem.  It's also common for women in the peri/meno stage to develop thyroid problems AND to be misdiagnosed as having a thyroid problem when they are instead having hormone problems.

For many, many years I have been one of those cold to the core women -- during deepest summer I sit at work with sweaters on!  That has only recently changed -- am now beginning to experience what I suspect are flashed -- but stay cold the rest of the time.  My cold turns to freezing right before my period -- I can ususally tell I'm on the way when I throw on an EXTRA sweater!

My thyroid panels have come back consistantly within the margins of being "normal" -- but my doctor says he frankly doesn't believe it, and we're talking about starting me on a throid regime. (BTW, every woman in my family has thyroid problems, so it wouldn't be a big surprise.)

If you haven't been checked, do so - and make sure they do a FULL panel with both T3 and T3 -- the more standard thyroid panel misses way to much.

Hi everyone.  I get lots of hot flashes and night sweats but in between I feel quite cold.  In bed last night I could not get it right - was awake lots.

I am glad to read that someone is having this cold to the core feeling. Recently, after 6 yrs of having weird symptoms of : burning skin, burning mouth, allergies, continuing chemical sensitivies to drugs and any kind of spice or acid in food, flashes, anxiety etc. I,all of a sudden am cold after I eat, having what I am trying to call "cold flashes" accompnied by palps that last for 1 to two hours, instead of the usual 5 minutes or so with the heat flashes. My hands either go bright red or white with cold. My skin is itching all over and burning. I have had lots of meno symptoms continually(post 5 yrs) but I feel like some kind of damn has broken in the body. This is getting me scared! Also, with the palps chest is getting tight including throat. And sometimes feel bloaty with this. HELP!

seabum.......You indeed have had a time of it.  Wouldn't you think that by 5 years post the hormones would have settled down.  Its mind boggling to me somedays.  When does it *go away*?

So sorry that you are having this issue with palps and cold flashes.  I have not had that thankfully but  I certainly can understand why it scares you.  I would be "Frightened To Oh My" also.

What are you doing to help alleviate these feelings?

I've had a huge number of cascading symptoms since my hysterectomy in April 2002. I was left with one ovary which was just removed (due to more problems) Jan 7th 2003.My whole body thermostat was off doing intense hot flashes and then intense deep cold. in the first few months after my hysterectomy I was put on a como of Elavil and Prozac at 10 mg each. That combo and the regulation of the brain helped to control my body thermostat tremendously. It was also the right combination for post surgical electrical pain. Both medications as a combination are used effectively for Neuropathy. Right now I was just put on estrogen therapy because the Endocrinologist who was doing my ovary removal didn't want to shock my body since I've had heart rate problems since my hysterectomy.I'm still taking the elavil and prozac and I am not having any difficulty from the removal of the ovary a couple of weeks ago.I'm also having a blood sugar problem addressed(not diabetic)that is part of a metabolism problem that is linked with endometriosis (which I had)I am also on meds for that too and that's also contributed to a better stage of feeling well.Blood Sugar ties closely in with our female problems if we have cysts on the ovaries or Endometriosis/adenomyosis.Kamie

Regarding the Palps and the Throat, It could be a link to any number of problems brought on by Menopause.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome ties in w/ surgically induced menopause and I believe also menoause in general. My Gastroenterologist told me that he treats a lot of menopausal women and women who have had hysterectomies.Sometimes throat problems go along with the IBS symptoms most probably due to the function of the Vagus nerve which runs from the throat(aids in swallowing) on down to the colon. He says the problems are becoming more and more common.

Unfortunately, the throat thing is also a warning sign for cardiovascular problems.Cardiovascular problems are heavily linked to menopause.I just read a report on Strokes that lists Menopause as one of the causes of Strokes.I 'm pretty sure it was on the National Institutes of Health Web site under info on the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.Check it out.And last but probably not least, there is the ever mysterious endocrine problems that comeinto focus with menopause, surgically induced menopause and a number of female problems linked to endometriosis and cysts on the ovaries. They syndrome would be called PCOS or SyndromeXif cardiovascular problems like palpitations/tachycardia and high blood pressure enter the picture.I was told by my Reproductive Endocrinologist that 95% of the women who have Endometriosis develop this cluster of symptoms. So it would largely depend on your medical history if you would need to investigate further. He just recently removed my last ovary because of my symptoms and thankgoodness he did because the thing had Ovarian Endometriosis. So, right now, that I should be slipping and sliding along the path of real surgically induced menopause, because I no longer have any of that female equipment at all, I'm feeling better than I have in over a year.I attribute that little miracle to finally getting a correct diagnosis that tied in my female issues with the whole body need.Once the doctors stopped separating the conditions in my body from my menopausal symptoms I found answers to the debilitationg discomfort and real medical emergencies that were happening.Kamie

My husband says that after I eat, the blood is pumping to my digestive system instead of my extremeties, so that could be one reason why I get cold right after I eat.  But the rest of the time, I don't know, I didn't attribute those cold flashes to hormones, but now it does make sense.   Also, a lack of progesterone can mimic thyroid problems, I saw that in one of Dr. Lee's books.

I started keeping my thermostat a lot lower in my house, too, because it helps with hot flashes, but then it makes those cold flashes worse.  I turn my hair dryer on me during those times, when I can, and get warmed up quickly.   I have one of those new ones with negative ions, so that really helps clear my energy field, too.  Talk about alternative therapies!  Makes my hair nice and shiny, too.   LOL
