Hello ya'll, havent been around for awhile cause I was feeling just great, but now.........here we go again.Started perimenopause about 1-1/2  years ago, been on progesterone cream since Dec.  Was working great, then about a month ago, the hot flashes and night sweats returned worse then ever.  Have not been able to sleep more than one hour at a time as the hot flashes and night sweats wake me up, soaking wet. This also goes on all day long, at least once an hour, I get a hot flash and within 5 minutes my clothes are soaking wet.  I also have not had a period in 2 months. Normally I would get the flashes for a few days right before my period and I am wondering if this is why they have gotten so bad, no period to relieve them ???I am taking the cream, black cohosh, evening primrose, and soy, what else am I suppose to do.I feel so drained from not sleeping and I am so sick of sweating and yes, right after the flashes and sweats I am shivering and freezing.  At this point the only thing the cream seems to be helping are the mood swings, at least I dont feel psychotic.Any suggestions, PLEASE.Thanks,Bayou

Hi, has anyone here tried or had any relief with accupuncture..I swear I will try anything..talk about being at my wits end. I did not get along with the black cohosh....anyone else have trouble with it?  It seemed to make me shaky..I KNOW that sounds strange, but I just felt weird taking it...ANY new tips appreciated..GREATLY..in the meantime Im back on a hormone patch which I swore I would not do...SOME relief is better than nothing.  Like others I get relief for a while and then the flashes come back in FULL force :>(...Hope everyone is doing "ok" an thanks so much for listening.

A question for any of you!!I've had hot flashes, and night sweats in the past.  The hot flashes subsided, but I've had trouble at night for many years.  It seems a little different than the night sweats in the past, and I'm wondering if it even has anything to do with hormone fluctuations at all, but have no idea what else this might be.  My problem is that a few minutes after going to bed, a "surge" of heat takes over my body on the inside.  Off go the covers, but the only thing that happens is the outside of my skin is freezing, while my insides are still on fire.  I am hardly sleeping at all these days!  This usually happens suddenly, and always within a few minutes of getting into bed.  It's getting really old.  I can't sleep with a sheet on, but can't sleep with it off either.  Does this sound consistent with "night sweats", or what?HELP!

Debbi:  I think "night sweats" feel different at different times.  Essentially, they're hot flashes at night.  I'm getting so I hardly wake up when I kick the covers off.  And then I'm freezing!  Sometimes I feel what can only be a surge of adrenalin, and that wakes me up.  I've been using progesterone cream at night, so that helps.  What also helps, right now my hubby and I have separate rooms.  That way, he can sleep away while I read or toss and turn.  Makes for a more pleasant day!  Good luck in your journey, Debbi.

Suseyq,

Thanks for your reply.  I've been contemplating the "separate bedrooms" situation, but neither one of us can sleep without the other one---but we're not sleeping that well in the same bed either!  My husband has been so tolerant--I HAVE to have the window open and a fan blowing---he sleeps under the comforter all year long!  He never complains, but I feel bad even though there's nothing I can do!  Anyway--it helps to know that these probably ARE just night sweats or flashes.  Thanks again.

My hotflashes have improved tremendously..thought I was going to die.  I am going natural as many of you are.  Found a great practicioner that gave me some little homeopathic pills to take every 4 hours or when I had a flash.  I could not believe how much they have helped.  I would suggest finding a homeopathic expert and getting these little jewels.  Now, I just keep them in  a drawer next to my nightstand and use them ocassionally.  Progest creams helps too.  Good luck!

I hear all of you!  I've been in menopause for nearly 10 years.  When it began, my doctor gave me Premphase.  Took it for nearly 10 years.  Still had hot flashes with it, but they were tolerable.  Since she took me off Premphase in July of this year due to the fact that I had been on it for so long, the hot flashes returned with a vengence!!!!  I can't sleep, sweat pours off me at work (I work with the public), and I'm FREEZING my family out of house and home.  Can someone please tell me when this will all end????  I started taking New Phase about 2 months ago.  So far, no difference.  Am I wasting my time and money, or will it start helping soon?  Please Help!
Suseyq
Luann:  Did you go off hormones cold turkey?  Seems like tapering would have been better since you've been on them so long!  Cruel and unusual punishment, in my opinion!  I read something interesting recently.  When we take hormones, we don't stop menopause from coming, we postpone it.  When you stop hormones, you go through it.  Not sure what New Phase is.  Is it Black Cohosh?  Natural remedies take awhile.  You could try soy, although I recently stopped my soy and must admit my digestion is 100% better.  It helps many, though.  I read another theory.  Hot Flashes and other symptoms go in cycles, so when you try something and feel better, it might have been just the timing!  Might be why we seem to jump from one thing to another. In your case though, you may be suffering a bit more because you stopped the hormones.  Good luck.

"aNYONE HAVE ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS FOR THOSE OF US WHO ARE GOING COLD TURKEY?"

Yes, in one word -- Revival -- and I'll eat my hat if you don't see a difference in the way you feel.

Further, nobody should go off HRT cold turkey. There's a very informative thread about it on the Estrogen and Hormone Replacement Therapy Forum in the topic "Weaning / Tapering Off HRT."

I just signed into this forum today.  I am in need of help to find something for the hot flash curse too.  But I will tell you all that the only thing I have found relief from has been the Phyto-Estrogen at GNC..it was the only one of all the others I tried that helped.  and I have tried other things with no results at all.  The Posgesterone did nothing for me.  My hot flashes are terrible also like many of yours are.  I hate them with a passion an would love to look for a gun at times. (if you know what I mean) I was having 40 to 60 hot flashes a day.  But this Phyto-Estrogen slowed them down to 10 or less a day and not so bad in the night either...I could finely sleep all night at times.  I take this with just a Vitamin Pill for Women.   Now this is the kicker..after I am happy with this Phyto-Estrogen after I have been on it for about 3 months it seems to stop working as good as it did in the first few months.  So I am looking to find something else that might help as good.  I was just told about the Primrose Oil...so I wanted to know if it has worked for some of you too.  Also would it be possible to add the two together and hope that would keep the hot flashes away even more so.   And YES...I did stop the Phyto-Estrogen for about 3 weeks then got back on it...and it helped just like it did the first time.  And I didn't have to wait a month for results it helps the hot flashes in just 3 days after I started taking the pills.I like having a place to ask questions from all of us with this curse.  Thank you all.

I was just thinking yesterday that I cannot remember when I last had a hot flash. I, too, had them all day and night long and drove me and my family crazy. I read somewhere where 1500 mg natural vit c and 800 IU vit e (natural) daily would help. After about three days the hot flashes and night sweats are all gone and have been for months. As with any other 'treatment' it may or may not work for you.

Hi Everyone~~~well I sure am in the same boat as the rest of you with the hot flashes/nightsweats. I am sooo.. tired from not sleeping... have been having nightsweats for a couple of  years..but only right before my period. In april I had 2 periods that month and now I'm 2 weeks late..hoping it just doesn't come at all!! Anyway for about 3 weeks  about 5 minutes after I go to bed I get that rush of heat ~~just like you described Deb~~ so off go the covers, the night gown..finally get to sleep..then about 2 hours later wake up sweating but also freezing just like some of you describe. I bought natural vitamin E and it made me so sick to my stomach that I just can't take it anymore. I was so hopeful that the Vitamin E would help. I am so cranky..and now usually when my period starts I feel so much better..but no period. I am due a checkup but my doctor is from the old school..HRT..the only way he thinks to go. If I didn't have you gals to talk to it would be so much worse. It's good to see I am only one amongst many going through this. Well. I'm off to mow my yard..the one thing that truly helps me feel better is exercise..guess it just takes my mind off of it. Bless each of you and hope everyone finds a light at the end of all this..soon!!!..

I was getting extremely tired of the night sweats too---losing LOTS of sleep.  I had tried progesterone cream, black cohosh, soy (which helped a little).   I KNEW there were many things in my diet that were triggers to a 'surge', , not just when I consumed them but for up to 24 hours after.  I just wasn't willing to give them up.  They are:

Red meatWine or any alcohol (REALLY a trigger),all meats in generalcheesespicy and overly salty foodnot ENOUGH fruits and veggies

So, basically, I have had to go to a largely vegetarian diet (I don't find too much trouble with fish and seafood) .  It is tough, the family eats things I don't, and I've upped the soy a bit to make up the proteins, and I do miss wine, but I have seen a REAL difference in the way I feel.  Night sweats are cut to about 1/4, I feel more energetic and think more clearly.

I also cut out my (lots of) coffee, and switched to a little tea once in awhile--not much.  Basically, I think this goes along the line of the Okinawan-type diets that everyone talked about awhile back---fish, less or no meat, LOTS of vegetables and fruits (I shoot for 9 or 10 a day) rice, whole grains, water, tea, herbal teas, nuts, some dairy.

Not surprisingly, I have also lost about 10 #.  No hot flashes, weight loss, feel better---I can't think of any drawbacks, except I can't wait until I can have a litlle wine once in awhile. LOL

I am in the same boat.  Went off of Prempro because my doctor would not give it to me any longer.  Nasty hot flashes with sweats.  Soy did not help, maybe I am not taking enough.  Saw an ad on Tv for NewPhase and wonder if anyone has tried it and if so if it works?
Canadair
Hi Janet,

I tried Newphase a while back and my experience with it is that it gave me severe ovary pain.....could have been coincidental but stopped using it and have never had that pain again.

Janet41
Did the NewPhase help the hot flashes and sweats?
MaryO
Besides the NewPhase, there are lots of other suggestions on the Power Surge Recommendations Page

Also, there's a great deal of information on the rest of the Power Surge website. For example, there are some basic introductory articles, such as Power Surge's Menopause Survival Tips, What's A Hot Flash?, About Your Hormones and a simple explanation of menopause in the Menopause Primer.

Best of luck, Janet!

I went off hormones Aug. 2002. I am doing pretty good, but have night sweats and hot flashes. Occasionally I use Ativan for anxiety.......only  4 or 5 a month. I noticed that on the nights that I take the Ativan that I don't have any night sweats or hot flashes. I have tried health food stuff for hot flashes but nothing works for me and I don't take soy as it doesn't agree with me. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this with certain drugs such as Ativan . Unfortunately it is addictive or I would take it every night.

This is my first visit to the site. I have been going through the menopause since a hysterectomy some years ago but lately I have had HOT HOT flushes, all day! I cannot take HRT due to it giving me a stroke, so I am now desperate. Because I take medication for the stroke I am unable to take certain natural relief so I have been told to take vitamin E and evening primrose oil. Does anyone know of a diet that could help? My doctor alluded to one but I cannot find anything like she suggested. Help please!!!! (:mad:sad.gifsad.gif

It's comforting to know I'm not the only one who has tried everything. Vit E, C, black cohash, Revival, progesterone. I'd get a month's reprieve and then back again with the hot flashes. I take progesterone as an osteoporosis treatment and the pharmacist has often tinkered with the percentage only to have the flashes come back again. Finally, by pure accident, I stumbled upon something that works for me. Nzymes, it's a mix of rice and soy bran and 4 vitamins and is like the natural enzymes that appears in fresh foods. I started it because of tendonitis (after putting my dog on the pet version and being astounded at the results) and within a few days the hot flashes were gone. Then I went to website and saw that women who used this and that had menstrual problems saw those problems go away. It's not promoted as a menopause solution but hallelujah, it's the ticket for me....any my tendonitis, knee aches, etc are much better. I was out of town last week and forgot tne nzymes! AAGGHH! Hot flashes were back in 2 days and left again as soon as I got back to the nzymes. You can only get them from ** so I now keep them packed in my suitcase. Worked for me and I'm thrilled!:
