I have certainly had tingling in my face, often down one side, and I have had a friend around the same age (44) who has had numbness. I have seen posts relating to other people that have experienced this.Hope this helpsEliza

I experienced the numbness on my face and lips off and on for over a year during perimeno. I was scared too- kind of felt spacey and light headed with it sometimes. I've read it's another great meno symptom. Thank God for this web site so we all can confirm all these wierd symptoms that would have scared us to death!

Thanks for the replies I really appreciate it, you have no idea how good it feels to know that I am not alone. Wish there were more replies. But I'm very thankful for you two.  Yes thank goodness for this site..don't know what I would do without it.

Moozie I am post meno and still get that tingly feeling around my nose mostly.  Like a cobwebby feeling for me. It is very annoying and disconcerting for sure...but you re not alone.

Blessings.

Madge
Moozie, check out my reply today (April 21) to the topic "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome."  During meno I had the same symptoms, plus tingling in my hands and legs.  They are a lot less troublesome now in post meno, but I still get the tingling in my legs and head, plus lightheadedness,  occasionally. What we girls go through with this meno stuff!  Madge

Frequently, when a person has tingling or numbness, it is the result of hyperventilation. You are not aware that you're doing it, but the next time you get the numbness and tingling, try breathing slowly in and out of a paper bag for a minute or two. It just might help. What has happened is you're blowing off all your CO2 . Hope that helps a little.

Oh gosh...the cobweb description is a good one!  This scared me really bad at first...I thought I was getting MS or having a stroke.  After a few months of having it on and off....I saw that it came and went of it's own accord.  Mine is usually on and around my nose.  It's a wierd tingling sensation...almost like the feeling you have when something has fallen asleep.  As you can see...from all the replies, you're not alone smile.gif

I too have experienced these feelings in my face, they really had me scared also and along with the tingling in my hands  also it got to the point I went into the Cleveland Clinic for a spinal tapp, they thought I too had MS, fluid was clear and I was very relieved.
Madge
And I had the same experience at the Marshfield Clinic in Wisconsin. Same symptoms, same tests, same results. I wonder how many of us go through these tests, and why the doctors don't put two and two together and tell us that the tingling/numbness might just be menopause.  (Seems like a no-brainer to me.)
Lizzy49
Okay here I am.  I also have the numbness on the left side of my face from time to time. Yes It has scared me also. So happy to see I am not alone. Does anyone know if this is accually part of meno? I also have terrible exhaustion this week that is very hard to deal with. I am reading and reading trying to find sanity. Thanks to all.   Lizzy49

My lips have been raw,  tingly and at times burning, for the past year or so.  I have also had a lot of lip peeling, which probably contributes to the burning and rawness sensations.   These feelings are intermittant and are not becomming worse.  I have gotten some relief by applying an aloe gel with vitamins and vaseline, used separately.  I have also developed several cold sores since last November and finally had to use a prescription cream after 6 OTC remedies were not effective.

Additionally, I  have occasional tingling in one of my hands, but have had that symptom for many years.  I had it evaluated by a neurologist and my test results were all normal.  The lip sensations are certainly strange, but do seem to present themselves in some people during peri.

Me Too.  Can we really blame it on menopause?  It's a little scary, not to the point I'd see a doctor, but it makes me wonder.  I sometimes think it's because I'm clinching my jaw or tension in my neck and shoulders that causes it (my own diagnosis).  It was pretty amazing to me to see other women having the same symptom.
bobbibridgers
Me too, me too!  I get this on and off, on different areas of my face and also in my arms and hands.  It unnerves me most when it affects my eyes.  Does anyone else ever get tingly around the eyes?  For me, it feels both tingly/numb and twitchy at the same time - makes me feel like I need to close my eyes.  It always goes away, but it's still very bothersome.

I must say that the idea of this being related to hyperventilation makes a lot of sense to me.  When all of this started for me, by way of a HUGE panic attack, I had a lot of trouble with hyperventilation for quite a while.  I've pretty much conquered it now, but I still have my moments.  When I get tense or stressed, my breathing gets whacky and sometimes I don't even notice it until I start feeling spacey or tingly.

Ugh!  Sometimes I really hate being a woman.

Just found this site, it's 4:30 and I am in the thick ofmenopause, tears are streaming down my face....Yes tingling of the face and tongue are some of mysymptoms, thought I had MS or something. So goodto hear i'm not alone and that other women are going through this.
dreamer
I can so relate to the tingling and numbness...Along with the racing heart, dizzy feeling. What is a girl to do to get relief. I also have a thyroid problem so this hormone stuff is a double dose along with it. When does it all pass? and you feel like normal again...
Cherry
It makes me feel much better to know I am not alone with this horrible tingling feeling in my head, legs and feet. I  am 52, I still have a period but it is irregular. My GP prescribed HRT for me mainly because of the 'crashing fatigue' that I feel but I was never really happy about taking it. I came off  HRT after the last Breast Cancer scare here in the UK a few months ago. Perhaps I should have weaned myself off it gradually, but I stopped it suddenly.
Madge
Cherry, you mentioned tingling in your head. Mine is often on the top of my head, or else my right temple. What was your head tingling like? I get it in my fingers too, and sometimes the front of my legs below the knee. Sure can be scary.

Does anyone feel tingling in their lips as if novocaine is wearing off? I can't tell anymore if it's really there or I'm reading so many of these posts that I THINK I am feeling these things. Have a happy holiday! EJ
moozie
eJ, I have felt that novacaine feeling on the side of my face. Cute !! moozie
nel
I'm so glad I found this topic. I have had this feeling on one side of my face, the cheek, by the nose extending out an inch or inch and a half. It's like novocaine is wearing off. It scares me also, but I would never want to bother with major testing unless other problems developed with it. It's a transient feeling, comes and goes. I've had tons of dental work in my life, and I've wondered if the novocaine shots did some nerve damage which is just showing up now as symptoms because of the meno thing? I'm 51 and haven't had a full blown period in 11 months. Glad I'm not alone, and I'm sure you all are too!
ej
I have already posted, a few responses above this, a question about tingling lips (the sensation that novocaine is wearing off). This seems to be recurring every so often. I've tried to do a search on it in relation to meno but can't find any adequate websites. If you have any info on this, can you please let me know. I am a little stressed out lately. I am particularly curious about why this comes and goes but more importantly why does everything hit at the same time:o Any insight into this would be great. Have a pleasant eve. EJ

Hello everyone - This is an interesting topic for me....I've have the numbness at my lips and tongue... and sometimes I have ALOT of pressure at the face - but it is not consistant with hot flashes or anything else.... It just happens....and it's scary when it happens. Today, my tongue is numb, pressure at my face and on and off hot flashes today. I guess the hot flashes are a blessing today because it's 6 degrees in Penna., haha. The numbness at the face and lips might be another perimenopausal/menopausal symptom when the hormones start flucuating. So many of us have the same problems - Wow - it's a good feeling to know that were not alone and were able to share our thoughts and feelings. Blessings, Stacy

I have that numb feeling today on my upper lip and nose, like I went to the dentist and got novacaine...isn't this fun!!! ARG!!!!!!! A numb hug to ya tongue.gif Moozie

Hey Moozie, I get LOTS of weird numbness's since entering peri: face, mouth, nose, even sometimes my fingers! It's been happening to me off and on for about 5 years now. All tests show I'm 'normal'! Guess we just reach a certain age and turn.......well, numb? lol...hang in there. I have SUCH a toothache today that I wish I could BORROW some of your novacaine numbness!! sad.gif You aren't alone! HUGGERS! Kleeo

I have spots on my back and back of my head that have felt like 'buzzing', but that's been going on for many years. I have had the crawly sensation around my mouth for years, too, so I don't know if it has anything to do with hormones. It seems like there's something always wierd going on with me, so I've never told any doctor about it.
Meryl
Hi all! You might want to read the posts under "Internal Shaking." I think what you have been experiencing is definitely related to a lack of estrogen. I had this six years ago, and it's back now with a vengence!
jillsfolly
Wow - can't believe you all have my symptoms. I'm 48 and experience left side facial numbness, terrible hand pain (just had EMG-waiting for results) and sensitivity to bright light especially when driving. Sometimes I feel like I’m going to have a seizure or something. I find it’s also a stressful time in my life and am being treated for Adrenal stress. The symptoms seem worse when I'm undergoing a lot of stress. I’ve always had trouble staying in the present and quieting my mind in order to meditate. I am using an amazing computer game which teaches you to control your breathing. You are hooked up to biofeedback monitors and go on a beautiful journey. I find I use many of these techniques in everyday life and, yes, it helps. It’s like a mini vacation and basically the only time I take for myself since my whole life revolves around driving and scheduling for my kids! Boy, what women go through.

Hi, jillsfolly! I just wanted to welcome you to Power Surge, since I saw that this was your first post smile.gif You'll find lots of help and support here - on these boards, as well as the main Power Surge site and in the weekly guest chats. That computer game/biofeedback monitor seems very interesting.

Well, I am joining the crowd. I have had tingly numbness feelings for many many years. When I was young I used to have it on either the left of right side of my back, sometimes I would have it on the left or right butt cheek:o... mostly on my back though. In the last few years I do have it mostly in my face around my cheek, lip, and nose. Sometimes I have it around my eye or on top of my head. I know it's really weird. I have noticed when I am really concentrating on a task and having to pay very close attention to what I am doing, I can bring it on in no time at all. Since I have it a lot more frequently now, I do believe hormones play a roll here. Greetings, Angela

I have been having problems with tingling on the leftside of my face. What scares me is that i am only 25 going on 26. is this really due to menopause? I wonder could it be stress because i do have anxiety problems. Sunday afternoon i woke up and it was tingling on the left side of my face. I am scared because i am too young for menopause and since you all are older than i am. I'm wondering should i be cautious about this or not. I know this is an old post but i would love to get some feedback. e-mail me if possible. sad.gif

Hi my name is Nancy. I have the same feelings and although I am going to be 47 & in peri, mine is from the anxiety. Because as soon as I take my Xanax it goes away.
Hope this helps.

Hi blessedo1ne,

Anxiety can cause all kinds of physical symptoms to practically every part of the body. At 25 you are to young for menopause but any age can have anxiety issues. My advise would be to have it checked out by a doctor if nothing more than to give yourself some peace of mind. I have had to deal with anxiety for some time now and have thought at times that I had horrible diseases because of the symptoms that anxiety has given me. But I have had things checked out medically just to rule out any possibilities and even though the anxiety is still here it has given me some peace of mind to know that there is no underlying disease.
There's a website called anxietycentre.com that you might want to check out. It has some helpful info an anxiety and all the symptoms possible.

Greetings! Lots of us gals here on Power Surge have experienced the numbness and tingling in all different kinds of places! It's a common symptom of menopause. Most likely caused by anxiety. If I were you, at your age I would have it checked out by my family doctor. Probably it is being caused by anxiety, but give yourself the benefit of a piece of mind and let your doc know what you're feeling! If you read any of the posts here, you probably already know that our motto is pretty much GET IT CHECKED OUT TO MAKE SURE!!
Good luck to you!

As everyone else writes it's so good to know others experience similar symptons. Try not to let it scare me, but I've hat the tingling and numbness in my face/jaw when have an intense orgasm. The hyperventilation theory does sound like it could be the cause. Can't help but worry it's something more serious like a stroke.
NYLynn
Hi everyone, my name is Lynn. I am so glad I found this website. It has eased my fears about what happened last night. I had fallen asleep while watching TV and when I awoke the left side of my face was numb and felt the same as when your foot falls asleep. But it quickly started to tingle and the numbness started to go away. It scared the bee-geesus out of me and I called my doctor today for a Monday appointment. I've had problems in the past with a pinched nerve in my neck, so I thought this might be another symptom of it. I also take Paxil for anxiety attacks, but I can't say this was an attack since I was sleeping. I hope that he can attribute this to menopause, because I am not likely going through a barrage of tests, including the most dreaded spinal, in order to find the cause...unless this numbness continues to happen. This is my 1st experience with facial numbness. So, like many people I thought it was a prelude to a stroke. Started looking it up on the net, thank god for computers, and thus found this wonderful site. What a relief to know it's not life threatening. unsure.gif

Lynn, Welcome.
You made the right decision. If it scared you that much it is worth checking out. You don't mention how old you are, good luck and let us know what the doc says.
Maybe you just slept on your neck and back crooked.????
NYLynn
Hi Dee,

Thanks for your kind words and for the warm welcome. I am 52 and nearing my birthday next month. Almost in full menopause but thet pesky period poped up just when I was reaching a full 1 year without it. Doc says I'm still ovulating, I think he nuts and tell him he must be reading someone else's chart. Hot flashes and mystery aches and pains are driving me nuts. LOL. biggrin.gif Menopause is not fun.

Hi ladies:

About a year ago I had facial numbness for several days, thought I was having a stroke, called my doc and she sent me to the pharmacy for Ativan. Told me to put one under my tongue to see if it would go away. It did. She said stress was what did it even after I commented on how well I thought I was doing coping with the stress in my life (another story). Anyway, she said, "that's just it, you are doing a great job! Mentally, emotionally and spiritually I was handling the chaos in my life.....the stress just manifested in a physical way". Interesting.

Then about 6 months ago, total numbness on left side of body. Hospital. Every test imaginable....said it was a mini stroke or MS. Talk about scary.

My doc believes I had a neurological migraine. No pain, just numbness.

Sooooooo, at 47 years old, very much into perimeno......I don't panic too much over numbness after what I have experienced but am glad I had it checked out.

These days I think I need to be ready for any curve balls headed my way. The physical ones just really s*ck because I have always been very healthy.

The tingly, burning lips and tongue have been one of the most annoying peri symptoms I have. It started last Oct and hasn't left..except a few times that I attribute to hormonal ups and downs. I also have tingling around my nose and eye. I'm 51, still having periods but only about every 4 months. I also get that feeling of being flipped with a rubber band, that started about 3 years ago in one area of my back, now that's a really weird feeling, isn't it?? Ahh~~the joys of peri, I would think I'm wacko.gif but see that you girls are going through the same thing..so not crazy afterall!!
Lassie
After re-reading all the posts here I just wanted to add a note that any numbness to the body needs to be checked out. You could be having a stroke and I don't mean to scare anyone but numbness in a limb or one side of your body is a classic symptom of a stroke. Nothing to be ignored.

This is posted in memory of my sister who passed away last April from a stroke.

Hi,
I came across this site by accident and I am soooo relieved that I found it. I have had tingling in my face now for about 2 weeks. I thought it might be due to stress but wasn't sure, and I have been worried sick. My doctor is sending me for a CAT scan. I mentioned that I had heard it might be due to menopause but he said no, this was not a symptom. I see now that a lot of us seem to experience the tingling so I am going to let him know the next time I see him. This site seems awesome. It's great to have support and to know that I'm not alone in this.

Hi Vicky, Welcome, I hate to say this about doctors, but some don't have a clue when it comes to menopause symptoms.

I have had just about all the symptoms at one time or another, and like you when I started to get a tingling numbing feeling in my face I was scared.. but I too had scans and everything was fine,

Now it has travelled down my left leg, it is very annoying but it is just the hormones....like you said there are too many of us with the same symptoms to be anything but...

It will ease your mind though to have the scan, but yes, I would inform the DR. that there are several symptoms besides the obvious ones.....

Hi Linda,
Thanks for the welcome. I'm still trying to get the hang of this site. I'm not sure if I've sent in an unfinished message or not. Oh well - I guess I can always say I'm having a menopause moment. biggrin.gif I've also had tingling in other parts as well - leg, foot, hand on the right side. But it's amazing - since I have been reading that other women are experiencing the same symptons, my symptoms have settled down. Don't know if it's temporary or just a preview of what's to come but I'll take the relief!! It's a pretty scary experience to go through.

TO ALL WHO SUFFER WITH FACIAL TINGLING: I have had this tingling in my left cheek and upper lip and tip of nose on and off for many months. It is usually very slight and usually does not bother me. I like the "cobweb" description because that is exactly how it feels. It has been constant for about 2 weeks now and seems to be getting more intense. It is also moving to the right side of my nose tip as well. I have been peri for about 5 years like most of you. I am 48. I started getting hormonal migraines about 2 years ago and they only come on just before my periods start and then go away. Sometimes they last 1-3 days. I have never had a migraine in my entire life until now. I am a Doctor of Chiropractic and this all scares even me. I have never heard of this being associated with being peri. It is usually associated with Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) which is a very painful facial pain which requires injections to calm the nerve and perhaps surgery to cut the nerve to end the pain. It is clear to me that you all are NOT having the pain of TN but merely have the feeling of tingling. The tingling distribution that I am having is the Maxillary distribution of the Trigeminal nerve (there are 3 areas of this nerve). Google "Trigeminal Neuralgia" to see the area of the face that is involved. I have an appointment with a Chiropractic Neurologist in two days. Once I have more information I will post it for all of you to read.

Thanks Bluefin, this is a great list and really opens your eyes as to the physical effects of anxiety. I have had many of these symptoms and have come to realize that they are anxiety related. How do I know? If I take something for the anxiety, the symptoms subside and/or disappear. So I use this to "test" the symptom. Anxiety seems to cause or make worse 80% of what I have experienced in peri. I have also learned that your body can be experiencing a level of anxiety even if you don't feel consciously anxious, stressed, or the like. Anxiety seems to be common in peri, is often "always on", and is a symptom that is not easily dealt with which makes it more important to know what other physical and emotional symptoms it causes. Thanks again - knowledge is half the battle.

Hi moozie! Guess I am late to this thread since I just joined, but I have had this occassionally on and off for the last year or so. It is a very disconcerting symptom but I was sure glad to see this thread and find out that this is one of the symptoms of perimenopause.

When it first started it was my bottom lip or the corner of my mouth that tingled, then it was the upper lip. A few times it felt like it was the side of my tongue or the roof of my mouth. That was so weird.

I do have TMJ so some of my symptoms may be correlated with that, but I honestly believe it is due to perimenopause.

Thanks for the great posts here that sure put my fears to rest!

PHew!!! I was starting to freak out. The right side of my face keeps going numb. It feels like when the novacaine (sp?) is wearing off and it feels fat/weird?? I feel much better after having aligned the weird face numbing symptom with my dry, burning vagina, insomnia, raging mood swings, and incredibly difficult time with losing weight. It is nice to know it will all be over one day.
antique
Hello Najia,
I used to get numbness in my face a lot, but as it seemed part of the tingling pins & needles stuff as well I just ignored it. That has cleared up but I still get burning mouth from time to time, hot flushing to my face ( with a rash:it goes ): that starts with tingling at the back of my neck, it used to cascade down my entire front, but that has stopped. Try looking at the posts in 'Internal Shaking ','Tingling, raindrops etc'
There's some good advice about dry vagina on the website- I'm afraid that's something no-one told me about until I experienced it, quite a shock.
Now what came first, the chicken or the egg?
Anxiety or menopausal symptoms?
You get the symptoms and then you get anxious and it's hardly suprising is it?It is definately NOT the other way round.
It's that time of year for losing weight isn't it? I am going to try Atkins again, that works even if it is frowned on a bit.
Hope you'll feel better soon or less anxious about the symptom knowing a lot of us have the same. smile.gif
