39 y.o. no children, folloptubal @ 27 after 3 miscarriages, peri symptoms @ 35 for 2 years sporadic, symptom free 2001.  3 weeks ago nights sweats, hot flashes, up every morn at 3:30 am - doesn't matter when I went to bed, crying for no reason all the time.  Med doctor suspects menopause, refers me to my ob-gyn, my ob-gyn says as not - see him when I stop bleeding, says to see a psychiatrist.  Med doc did 7 question survey on depression.  went to med doc cause I thought paxil would help - saw those tv ads with the crying lady, - am I anxious????? have two tests for thyroid and glucose to do but what about the mean time.  I can not work like this.  please any advice would be great.

Hi Shelby....If I were you, I wouldn't go see that Ob/Gyn.Dr. anymore...All that he is doing is adding to the confusion....I would stay with my Med Dr...You can still have your periods and go through peri meno at the same time...What the heck does that Ob Dr mean by "come back when you've stopped bleeding"..Find another Ob/Gyn....There's lots of them out there...That was so uncaring of him to say that....oooooo, some Dr.'s, I really don't know how they stay in business with such attitudes....Anyway, I know what you mean about having a hard time working with meno going on....I don't think you need a psychiatrist....I think that you need a caring Dr. to talk to..Don't settle for nothing less...I hope that you get better..Just keep coming to these boards any chance that you get, and you will see that you are not alone in your feelings at all....Most of us have been there.....Good Luck! And let us know what you decide to do....Remember that we're here for you...Sweetface

Hi Shelby... Ditto from me... dump the dumb jerk ob/gyn and find one who is a little more enlightened.  I am 53, still having regular periods, have been peri for about 5 yrs now, am on HRT, and am finally doing great.

I had a couple of ob/gyn's like that also... told me the same thing...to come back when I stopped bleeding.  They must have all gone to the same quack medical school.  There ARE good doctors out there that understand meno, you just have to look for them.  This doc doesn't know what he is talking about.... night sweats, hot flashes, insomnia and mood swings are common meno symptoms.  Shame on him and others like him!

I agree with everyone else. I went through several doctors untill I found a good one. I started going through menopause at 30 because I had 27 large cyst on my ovaries and they shut down. I had several other problems too and most of the doctors told me that it was my thyroid. I do have hypo thyroid, but that was not causing all the problems. I still had my periods, but they were not normal. You know yourself better than anyone and you have to be stern with these doctors these days. Go to several doctors untill you find one that will really listen and one that will run the test that need to be run.An opinion is just that, an opinion! Even after several sonograms and other test, they never detected my cyst on my ovaries. They had no idea untill they opened me up. Oh, and one more thing. I called several doctors and asked several questions before making an appointment. I told them what my problem was and what other doctors said and asked if they would look at it from another point of view and investigate the situation. Also, I have found that, in my town, there are three networks of doctors here and they don't work together on anything. They don't even use the same hospitals or testing sites. One network sends all their test to an out of town testing site. They work with their network and seem to work against the other. When I finally found the doctor that did my surgery, one question was "Are you in the same network as so and so" I have been to alot of doctors and they all seem to completely dissagree with their rivals. STRANGE PEOPLE!He said no, and gave good answers to my other questions, so I made an appointment. Lucky for me, he acted quickly. I was bleeding internally and needed surgery ASAP! So, make them listen to you. Alot of doctors think they know everything and that we should just take their word for it. I wish doctors should have to post their GRADES on their walls instead of a diploma!Just because they have a diploma, does not make them good doctors.Sorry about the length, but I am just sick of this kind of doctoring. Good luck. I know how fustrating those hotflashes can be. I keep them. I truely believe they will never get my hrt right.
