I have been on .75 levothyroxine for 9 weeks now. I had a test after 6 weeks and was feeling great. Now for the last 2 days I feel like I have been put on speed. My heart rate is around 100 constantly, and my hands feel shaky. Is it possible that they overshot on the thyroid med?
Has anyone had similar symptoms? I am going to call the doctor, but I'm sure she'll just order blood work and it will be days before I find out anything.

I would rather feel dragged out and fatigue then this heart racing, flightly, nervous feeling I have right now. And my temper is off the charts, I want to yell at everyone.
Does anyone have suggestions for how to maybe clear some of this out of my system? I heard it can take weeks for it to change levels. That's not a good thing if I have too much in me.

Are you taking anything else? Hormones? If not, then yes, I'd cut back on my dosage. Maybe not stop altogether but half it then third it then go back up the ladder with a third, half then full dosage. But if possible go in tomorrow and have labs ran before you step down your dosage otherwise it will be hard for her to tell.

I take E,P,T & cytomel (T3, I believe it's the same you are taking but not sure). After I increased my cytomel, my E skyrocketed. and I became dragged out and lethargic. I determined this was from having too much E and I think the cytomel may have spurred it on so I stepped down my dosages on both. It's been about 3 days now and I feel better. Should point out that I've never expereinced the racing heart and flighty feelings that you have, so what worked for me may not work for you.

It's so difficult getting things right. I despair of ever feeling 'normal' again. :-(

Did you just find out 9 weeks ago that your thyroid function is low? Why not skip a dose or two, or at the very least, half your dose. It will take awhile for your levels to drop as you are taking T4, which is longer acting than T3. I have no thyroid function due to a thyroidectomy and have occasionally skipped a dose or two without any problems. If you want an accurate picture of what your thyroid levels are, you should get your blood drawn before skipping the levothyroxine. I wonder if your thyroid gland has revved up and is now producing more thyroid hormone on it's own, thereby contributing to your symptoms.

While it's true that too much thyroid medicine can cause anxiety, please do not self-diagnose and start cutting back on your meds. Contact your doctor and let them tell you what to do. They may tell you to cut back, come in for blood work, etc., but let your doctor do that.

I've taken thyroid meds for 10 years. I had increased mine once, and I started to get the anxiety, so the doctor cut it back.

Hang in there, and let us know how it goes.

Please do not change your thyroid medications on your own. I am currently seeing an endocrinologist and she is VERY slowly tapering down my snythroid. You must do it slowly no matter how low you have been on them.
I was taking 1 and half pills a day and now she has only cut me down half pill so I am only taking .75 and am having my blood tested next week. She told me it takes a month for levels to change in your bloodwork once you start changing doses.
It is an extremely complication thing to control and may take different doses and different amounts to get it correct.

My husband flip flops from hyperthroid to hypothyroid like a yo yo. Do NOT skip doses! It can throw you for a tailspin. Get your blood rechecked. Levels can change seeming overnight as in the case of my husband. Now, after six YEARS of dealing with this...guess what? His last test showed his thyroid was working again (no surgeries) and he has been able to stop ALL meds. We know this is probably fleeting and won't last but the cool thing is he's had to take no meds for a month now and is doing well. Weird huh? It's a simply blood draw and you will have your answer. It really can be you are taking too much. When Ken found out he went hypo he was put on levox too. He was told he was making NO thyroid and the doc had never seen it so low. Being that low he was ONLY put on .50 mg and IT almost seemed too high and your on .75???!!! Get rechecked!

Thanks everyone. I did get a blood draw yesterday, no news yet. I am feeling slightly better, and my heart rate has been in the 80s, which is a definite improvement over the 100s of yesterday morning.
And I did take my dose this morning. I was talking to my daughter in law who is also on it, and she had a lot of trouble when she got pregnant last year. Now she's getting the racing heart and it's because her dose is too low. I guess they told her that her thyroid was trying to kick back in because it didn't sense enough T4. So I didn't think it would be good to skip a dose.
Hopefully they will call me today and let me know what my numbers are. I'm beginning to think that good old anxiety had something to do with all of this. I took some Magnesium yesterday at noon and that helped calm it all down.
I'm not on anything else. I was offered a beta blocker last year when I had palps really bad, but he said I should only take it if I'm having a bad day. I guess yesterday would have qualified smile.gif

Well I finally called for my results. My TSH is .90, it was 1.59 three weeks ago. But she said that it's fine, and it wasn't what caused my heart to race.
I do worry that it's still dropping pretty rapidly. I have been fine today, no racing. I'm beginning to think that it bumped up because I was anxious about the meeting or something, and then of course I went into panic mood and couldn't relax enough to get it back down. Good out hypocondria at it's best.
She did say that if it keeps going high for no reason, then I should go see my GP. But I know what that would be - here's an AD, just calm down.
I hadn't had any palpitations since I started taking it, and I was hoping this was the cure. I suppose it could be just the normal menopause heart symptoms coming back.
Thanks for all the support.

I have been taking thyroid meds for about 6 years. I typically stay a LITTLE high but that seems to be right for me because I feel the best there. The one thing I did have to do was to cut back on the cytomel (t4 med) because when combined with the levo-thyroxine it did make me go too high and I was having palpitations and racing heart big time. But, like everyone else, I agree that you should definitely be re-tested and slowly taper down if it is needed.

One thing about thyroid is that is it somewhat variable in how we each feel at different levels. I was told for years that I was not clinically in the low range (but boderline) and therefore was not given thyroid meds. Finally, a doctor saw the need and now I feel so much better. So, just be persistent and you will stablize but you may need several dosage adjustments.
