Just curious Jes, why did your doctor think that Ambien is better for frequent use than Tylenol or Advil PM? Ambien is a prescription drug that is stronger than what's in the other two meds, I think. The thing in the Tylenol or Advil PM that makes one "sleepy" is just an antihistamine. The OTC sleep meds (Nytol, Sleep-eze) are the same thing - minus the Tylenol or Advil. I think the Tylenol and Advil PM work so well because sometimes it's the aches and pains that bother our sleep more than we realize - so they take care of both - the aches and the drowsiness.
One of my friends was told by her doctor to take a Tylenol PM every single night for sleep because it was safer then the prescription meds and he wanted to try that first.
I used to take it every once in awhile, if I felt "antsy" when it was bedtime. It usually worked! But my BHRT doctor said to try melatonin, which I've found works really well for me. I take 1½ mg. about 3 times a week. It gives me really vivid dreams, but they're not disturbing, just weird LOL. And I have those dreams ALL week long, even if I haven't taken any melatonin for a few days (like last night).
My problem became more of not being able to stay asleep once I got there...I was waking a LOT through the night. Peri really really did a number on my sleep, just being able to fall off to sleep wasn't the problem...I needed to be able to stay asleep! Waking 4, 5, or 6 times through the night was really wearing on me.
While the Advil or Tylenol was good to help me drift off, I just couldn't get that all the way through the night sleep.
Aaaahhh, nothing like a good dream to get you through the night too!!
