I was just sitting relaxing last night and watching TV and decided to check my blood pressure. I used my left arm and the reading was 96/48 - I of course freaked out and checked my right arm, is was 112/72 pretty normal for me. I waited 10 minutes and took my left arm again and it was normal.
I was worried so this morning I had our wellness person at work check it for me. She got 90/70 on my left arm and 117/78 on my right. She said that was very weird, but nothing to worry about (easy for her to say).
She said I could come back later today and have it checked again, but she didn't think it was anything to freak out about.
Has anyone had a similar experience? I was going to chalk it up to my cuff, but not when she got the same thing.
I also think it could be related to my neck and back, I have scoliosis and sometimes when my neck is bothering me I have pains in that left arm.
Oh, and I started thyroid meds 6 weeks ago and was wondering if that would have anything to do with it.
Any advice or reassurance would be helpful. I might have my husband hide the cuff so that I don't become obsessed with it. He just started a new job after 10 months off and is working evenings, so I'm home alone after work until 11:00 when he gets home. That doesn't help the anxiety.

I went for my anual check up yesterday and the nurse took my blood pressure on my left arm. She said lets try your right because your left is so faint I can barely hear it. huh.gif She took it on my right and it was 120/90. Never had anyone tell me they couldn't hear it....my pulse was 66.

4dogkids,
I had to hide my cuff because I was obsessing with my readings. Not like your reading but mine is always low. Average is 90/78 something like that but that wasn't what I was obsessing over. I have a cuff that shows heartrate/pulse. And I was getting readings of 140's. It should be 60's-70's. And the little red heart on it would flash and read get checked out now. Well that freaked me out. It would happen mostly in the mornings when I would have morning anxiety. I did get it checked out and doc says relax. PFFF. So hide that cuff or it will drive you crazy...

I'm actually thinking I should have my husband hide it, since he does use it too. And I would only be able to check it when he's home. But then I might obsess about where it is and not knowing what my pressure really is when I'm home alone. I don't know which would be worse. I never had health anxiety until the last few years, and this really stinks. I just want to be normal again!

It got to the point that I would get high blood pressure readings just hearing the cuff. I hid mine also. I do have "white coat" hypertension, but normal for me at home. There are times I cannot even take it at home because just getting the cuff increased my anxiety. HIDE IT. If you are eating reasonably well and exercising, you should be fine.

Please go to the doctor and discuss it with him and have him check it.

I have a doctor's appointment next week with my endo. I'll ask her about it. In the meantime I went home for lunch and rechecked both arms. They were within 3 points of each other, and both slightly higher then usual.
That makes me feel much better. Now I just have to not pick up that cuff tonight or for the rest of the week smile.gif

I thought I'd let you know that my nurse practioner figured it out. She knows that I have the dreaded palps, and she said that if my heart skipped a beat when the cuff was on that arm, it would mess up the numbers. She also said that the wellness person probably didn't know that I get palps, so she wasn't listening for a skip. The nurse checked me out thoroughly and said that there is no reduction of pulse in that arm, and she checked the blood pressure on both arms and got the same results for each arm.

She said that if you get palps don't count on an electronic blood pressure cuff to get it right. It messes with the electronics if your heart is not beating nice and steady.

Needless to say I feel much better knowing what happened.
