I'm only 34 so I'm not really in perimenopause yet...although the last couple years I've been noticing my hormones changing more than ever, and I do know my mom had early peri....mid to late 30's. I've posted on here before.

Sometimes I get a choking feeling like someone is pushing on the front of my neck. I do have Hashimoto antibodies but my thyroid has been monitored and after a brief period of being low after the birth of my last child over two years ago, its been totally fine (no meds). Even as recently as last week I've had my neck felt by a dr and they felt nothing swollen or out of order.

My dr thinks its related to asthma, and while its been a bad summer for asthma, I do not feel this is a symptom....wheezing yes, the pushing feeling on my throat, no.

Is this hormonal? I'm up right now posting because I can't sleep because of it!!!! It comes and goes...generally lasts half a day to a day when it happens. Right now I'm at midcycle (ovulating) so...?

Hi there,
I can tell you that when I first started in the shut down process I most definitely suffered a strange feeling in my throat and neck area. I note that many women on here have suffered a similar symptom. I will warn you that doctors are clueless about it. I spent many a sleepless night thinking that it was the start of something terrible. unsure.gif
I think that as we go into hormonal decline the thyroid whether it be healthy or even slightly unbalanced, starts to play up.
The problem has passed thank goodness but there is no doubt that my thyroid has been very stressed throughout this process. At times I had a sort of tight wheeziness like pseudo asthma and other times fixated on my ability to swallow. Just awful and if you try to tell your doctor he will look at you with that, Oh dear, yet another hysterical female stare........
As you sit alone at night feeling really scared think of me and countless other women on here who have suffered in the same way, safe in the knowledge that it is temporary and will pass. Do use the search facility and look up lump in the throat /hoarseness type symptoms.

Take care

Also, if you are about to enter menopause at such a young age, I think that it is very important that you undergo hormonal testing for premature menopause. It seems that you have a family history of early menopause and I think that it would help you to confirm that these symptoms are related to that. It sounds as if you may need to be referred to a reproductive endocrinologist especially if you have not completed your family. Have you discussed you mum's early menopause with your doctor?
It may be that you just have a misbehaving thyroid gland.

Well my thyroid is confirmed fine for now...perfect actually. I did have my hormones tested about a year ago (along with thyroid testing) and it all seemed fine, but I'm not sure if they tested the right things to check for perimenopause. I did have slightly off numbers on progesterone but I didn't know if that had to do with my time of cycle, and the dr never seemed concerned about it.

I'm definitely done with my family, hub had a vasectomy, then we had boy number four, then he had another vasectomy. LOL.

Wheezing? INTERESTING because this summer I have had quite a bit of wheezing...I had thought I grew out of asthma but now it seemed to come back. So this week actually my dr is sending me for several tests for asthma and also gave me Advair. I truly do NOT think I have bad asthma but eh I'll humor him and get the tests done so we can rule it out. I do also get occasional heart palps and shortness of breath too. (My last baby was HORRIBLE hormonal-wise, I actually ended up in the hospital around my due date with terrible heart racing and palps.)

Unfortunately with my mom I cannot get more info because she died in a car accident about 13 years ago (just after I got married)...all I have is my dad's word that she started perimenopause around her mid to late 30's...but I know she still had her period because she had a bad problem with fibroids and extremely heavy bleeding, even had to be taken to the hospital one time she was bleeding so heavily she almost passed out. She died around age 43.

Its very possible my thyroid is going up and down but I do not know how quickly the numbers can change? So far my numbers have been perfect this entire past year...ever since they were low after having my last baby, they really did regulate themselves and have seemed steady ever since.
