Hi

I am a newby from Buckinghamshire, U.K
I started to get a metallic taste in my mouth 4 months ago - saw the dentist - no tooth infection or anything.

It faded after 2 weeks - then came back again after I had eaten a chilli dinner the night before. This time it was tingling burning tongue and some tingling of the lips - a burning mouth feeling. It has lasted for 4 weeks so far. Even though I no longer eat chilli!

Doctor had no idea - suggested herpes (which I have never had) or maybe an allergy

Dentist said today it is "Burning mouth syndrome" caused by hormone imbalance - shortage of estrogen possibly. My menopause started 10 years ago and I thought everything had settled down 5 years ago. She said the shortage of the hormone can damage taste buds?

I also have raised red bumps on one side of my tongue (which I panicked about - wondering if it was cancer) dentist said it was just irritated and to avoid acidic foods and drinks

So no more curry or wine at week ends!

Any ideas how to cure the BMS??

Welcome to power surge!I just had a bout of what you describe. It seams to have settled down now after a couple of months of it.I had burning tongue and the little red bumps all over it.It was starting to bother me so much I would **** on ice to calm it down.I also started taking a mouth full of aloe vera juice in the morning. If you've never had it before it tastes a lot like water except mine is gel like,it's very cooling to the mouth[if you drink it it does have a laxative effect].I also had the tingling lips at the begging.I knew it[burning mouth] was on the list of peri meno symptoms so I didn't panic.I still have it a bit but I have other symptoms that frustrate me more. You can also try cooling things like grated cucumber in yogurt that would be soothing too.Hope it settles down for you soon.take care Lumz

Cheers so much for the quick reply - its great to know others have same problem (stops me from thinking I am imagining it) Ill try your suggestion - I may try some of the progesterone cream too- its supposed to promote estrogen production)

and my burning mouth will be a good excuse to eat tons of ice cream.

I have had the same experience as you. Burning Mouth is really irritating. My Dr had no clue what it was even though my tongue was also red and patchy and burning. My dentist was more reassuring - and said that this can happen as we age - and that it was absolutely nothing to be concerned with. It would go on its own and even maybe come back again.

He also said avoid hot and spicy foods as this can make it feel worse! also to eat cold soft things like ice cream and yogurt!

I have had mine since February and some days it is SO irritating and other its just annoying and tingling - I have red spots and red patches too on my tongue. My lips also tingle at times.

It will go eventually - it is just irritating though isn't it?

Does BMS hurt or just feel strange? My tongue has been tingly, and I sense a metallic taste at times. Do you think this is estrogen related?

Thanks,

JC

Thanks for your reply

I have been sucking on a small piece of cucumber (trimmed of rind) about the size of a throat lozenge on and off throughout the day. I change it to a fresh piece sucking on it again especially after food or drink. That has worked better than chewing gum or anything else. The cucumber is cooling. I have also stopped drinking wine/eating spice foods/coffee/ acidic fruit.

The sore on side of tongue seems to have healed and so far the tingling/burning tongue has worn off (after 1 whole month) - whether thats co incidence or not I dont know. Might be worth giving the cucumber slice a try - it is also very cooling and keeps your mind off the sore tongue.
