Full Version: Stomach Acid?

MenoMania
Hi Everyone,
I had my last period about 2½ years ago. For the last 9 months, I have not been able to drink coffee or tea without feeling yucky! I seem to have excess acid and (with my doctor's assistance) have tried several medications that do not help very much. It's frustrating, not only because of the ongoing discomfort, but because I've always really enjoyed a couple of cups of coffee in the morning or maybe a cup of tea. Every time I go to a cafe with friends, I can only tolerate a (usually bland) herbal tea.
Could this be menopause related? and therefore just a temporary ailment?
Anyone else having the same problem?
Thanks for your feedback!

I have had a lot of acid reflux in the last 2 years. I am in peri and I take prilosec and so far it helps.

I hope you find some meds that will work for you.

I also take Prilosec. It's been a miracle for me. Although, I've come off BHRT for a short time and my AR became much worse even with the meds.
Since being diagnosed with AR or GERD two years ago, I've been mixing my coffee 1/2 decaf and 1/2 regular and we brew it that way. If I tried to drink a cup of regular coffee, I would pay for it pretty quickly.
Have you tried decaf at all?
How about blending 3/4 decaf and 1/4 regular if you still need the hit from the caffeine.

Hope this helps.

Yes I tried decaf but I switch back and forth so I really don't know if decaf would keep me from acid reflux.

Thanks for your responses!
I have tried both decaf coffee and decaf tea. They still bother my stomach.
I also have a burning sensation in my throat 24/7.
I've tried many over-the-counter meds which do very little (even tho my doctor told me I could take 2x the dosage). I was prescribed Pantoprazole several years ago when I have a relatively brief bout of AR. It worked quite well then but my more recent prescription of it did nothing significant.
I will ask my doctor about Prilosec and see how that goes.
Thanks again,

I love nothing more than a cup of two of coffee in the morning. However, I am refraining for now due to what feels like an ulcer. I have used acid-blockers like prevacid and they help some but nothing is as good as DGL licorice for getting my stomach healed. I like it because it gives me almost immediate relief from excess acid. If you want to try it, you can get it at the health food store. Just make sure it is DGL as regular licorice can cause hypertension is some if it is used on a regular basis.

Thanks gevalia for the advice re: DGL. I would prefer to use something relatively natural than prescription meds if I can.
I'll give it a try!
