I have been menopausal for 2 years with no periods. I had been having increased symptoms, hot flashes, weight gain, night sweats and so I went to the Dr. who ran blood test and discovered I was completely progesterone deprieved. He hooked my up with a compounding pharmicist and I have been doing a cream for about 10 days. It has prog, Dhea, testosterone...Yesterday I started spotting. Today I woke up to cramps and I full blown period! So what the heck???? Was it just that my body was in menopause because I had no progesterone, and now that it has here comes the periods again?

I guess I will call the pharmacy on Monday....just wondering what someone here might think....

I certainly would perfer not to have periods again!

Thanks in advance!

I believe that progesterone is the hormone that our bodies make to "shed" our lining. So if you have not had a period in 2 years, taking the P might of just help to shed whatever has built up over time. Then if you keep taking it daily, it works to suppress a period, kinda like bcp.

Many that use hormones take the P only for 10-14 days per month, which cause's a period, but if you take it everyday, then it works differently.

I use mostly estrogen, and can't seem to tolerate the P, it causes me to feel tired and depressed after about a week on it, so I do not use it often. After menopause, we are all very low on the P side of things, by adding it, you probably brought on a period, probably it will run it's course and if you keep taking it, it will work opposite.

But, ask your doctor and make sure this is the case. Good luck!

i too got a period after being 8mo with out one after using p, actually the first mo. i got 2 periods 2 weeks apart, but my dr said p is supposed to suppress the period and its not gonna be an every month thing- we,ll see- ive been using it for 4mo about first mo got 2 periods and then another 4day period 6 weeks later and than a 2 day period following mo.- so id say it is tapering off....

Mom2cody:
You have to have the total hormone picture balanced, and that might mean to add in some estrogen also, which was not mentioned? If you are in menopause for 2 years, then the estradiol is also surely low. Progesterone will cause any lining build up to shed immediately and cause this period, it may or may not happen again in the next month or two? This bleeding is very common when first starting on the hormones, after no periods for quite a while.
