I went to the gyn today. I am 49 yrs. in perio. started having severe symptoms one month ago. The dr. said that when your in perio. they do not do hormonal panel yet because of the fluctuations and it would not be accurate because I still get my period but it is irregular. She gave me bcp. Just wondering if the information she gave me is correct. Any advice ?

They do fluctuate and unless you do more than one, it won't tell you much. My doctor tested me four times in two months, but this is something we agreed upon based on my symptoms and treatment, and my periods were still regular. AND I had to pay for all but one.

I personally think women should have a baseline set when young and feeling fine, and then another when we are peri and feeling crazy so we can compare what's gone wrong.

This is somewhat B.S. If your periods have gotten to the point that they are irregular, that in and of itself is an indication that you have insufficient hormonal output. At the very least, she could have had you do a draw when your symptoms were at their worst, measuring FSH/LH/estradiol/testosterone/progesterone AND thyroid.

is correct but its not what we want to hear, i think most of us want proof that its are hormones and not some thing else, but most drs will act the same way yours did....

While it is true that hormones do fluctuate during peri and also true that most docs don't have a clue, it is not true that labs are not informative..enough of them done and compared at various times in cycle or when symptoms are best/worst will definitely start to give a picture. "Normal" is a very wide range..what's normal for you has to be determined....
