I feel like I am losing my mind!
I am 50, and for the first time I have missed my period for three months now. Yah, I have had hot flashes, on and off for the last five years.
BUT NOW, I am HOT-COLD-HOT-COLD , I feel like I am losing my mind! Its soooooo brutal!
Anyone else have this?!?!
Hello Spacemom,
Yeah....... most of us lose our temperature control mechanism at this age. Sadly it is very normal indeed. I sometimes get angry and think that no-one warned me about all this and then I realise that it was probably better not to know. Ignorance is bliss and all that. No-one told me that pregnancy 'morning sickness' could actually last all day!
No-one has really bothered to find out but the theory seems to be that, falling oestrogen disrupts endocrine function and causes the hypothalamus of the brain to have trouble maintaining an optimum body temperature. The fluctuations cause the hypothalamus to keep taking drastic action to get that temp back in range. Hello.... to the world of swinging temperature and hot flashes.........
I do believe that the body, given time, will re-adjust but it tends to take years. I am certainly much better than I was 3 years ago but I still have the hots at 53. There is little doubt that hormonal therapy will mask the problems very readily but what happens when you are forced to come off for health reasons.
There is only one solution...... come back as a man next time!
