Hi all, I am only 39 and going through a second round of anxiety that I thought was related to years of fertility drugs/issues. But now my dr. said I am in perimenopause. Dont ask me how he knows since my 3 day bloodwork all came back normal. Regardless, I am on an antidepressant to help with the anxiety, but am still having my main symptom (which I believe caused my anxiety in the first place), which is the tingling in my right hand and left foot. (Of course to make it more confusing, my MRIs show I have a few protruding discs in my neck and one in my lower back, so I dont know if that is the cause of the tingling). But I was getting the adrenaline surge (& palps) when waking in all extremities, which makes me think it was anxiety related. Plus, Ive never had back problems, so what are the chances of both discs acting up at the exact same time.

I started magnesium and calcium supllements, along with Vit C, Omega and a multi, but it is still going on, mostly when I am sitting or laying down. I see so many of you have this really annoying symptom and for that I am sorry so many of us are suffering. But since I am new here, I was wondering if anyone has had any success with anything and wanted to know if it does go away. My periods were really irregular for the last 3 months, but now since Ive been on the meds, it is back on track. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I cant stop thinking about it, which causes more anxiety and probably more tingling. Thanks so much, Maria

This is driving me nuts too.I get it mainly in my left foot and sometimes hand.Though at the beggining I had it all over including head and arms but it would come and go.I know low iron and B12[or too much B vits] can cause it so I'm working on that. But my husband thinks it's a pinched nerve in my back which it does sometimes act up when I'm doing yoga.Do you find your foot more sensitive?I know there are some creams that are supposed to help with nerve pain but I don't know if it would help this.

It started with my right hand, then I had it in my left foot only when exercising, and now its my left foot all the time. It literally can drive you crazy, but I am trying to not think about it, which I know only makes it worse. I am just so tired of feeling crappy all the time. Good luck to you. Check back in case someone posts a good remedy. I read somewhere about alpha lipoic acid helping with the tingling, but cant verify that anywhere.

hello Maria,
I am in the same boat as you. My tingling started 4 months ago in both feet only when resting or lying down. It has induced a lot of anxiety as I started to google what it could be. sometimes I get it in the fingers but rarely. Sometimes I wake up with some numbness but it goes away. I have tried to find in the Internet some answers but not magic potion! I find yoga (ygentar) helps me even though I am just a beginner especially to deal with the anxiety. Some days, if I am really busy, I don't feel it then I start thinking about it and it comes back. the worse is going to be. I had an EMG done and the doctor thought it might be back issues. I know my back has been hurting on an off in the last 15 years. He does not think it is anything serious because it is positional tingling. In the mean time, I am like you What on earth is this? I don't know about alpha lipoic but will check into it. I was on B12 for a while and have really changed my diet with no refined sugar or yeast or whatever you are not supposed to eat, it did not change. Some days are worse than others but I stopped menstruating 10 months ago so I cannot tie it to my cycle anymore. What helps me is this site and a friend of mine who has had the same isssue for a while now.
I am sorry I could not help but I thought I would share my experience.

Hi all,
I cannot give you a magic cure for the tingling but I can tell you that it is very common around the time when periods cease. There tend to be two types of tingling,
that which is associated with panic and tingling that occurs without any sign of panic. It is important to establish which one you have. No-one seems able to tell us why it occurs but my theory is that it involves a dysfunctional thyroid gland that is very unhappy at being asked to function with greatly reduced oestrogen levels. Indeed, tingling extremitiies is a clear symptom of an underactive thyroid. When your hot flashes really get going you will probably find that they are linked to the sudden surges of mild panic and heat that occur with hot flashes. I often used to wake with numbness and tingling in my hands and would get waves of tingling/crawling ants during the worst period of hot flashes.
This is unlikely to mean that you have thyroid disease, although it is of course possible, it is likely to be a confused thyroid gland causing endocrine and then neurological problems.
Try not to Google your symptoms or you will end up thinking you have MS. (Not a good place to be! ohmy.gif )

Cheers,

Hi Maria- the tingling could very well be because of the protruding discs in your neck, did you ask your doctor?? It's also one of the 34 symptoms of menopause as you know. My bet would be that you are in full swing peri and have this awful symptom. Sigh... it's always something! laugh.gif

I was 36 when I started peri and all my tests came back normal too. All "normal" really means is NORMAL FOR YOUR AGE. If possible get your blood results faxed/emailed over to you so you can actually see the numbers and do some research on your own. You can post your results here on the boards and you will get lots of input from the ladies here.

Try to relax. Peri meno is no joy ride, and you can burn out fast. There is a lot of info here, and not just on the message boards. I encourage you to check out the entire site. You are not alone!!

Hello XIII,
thanks for your message, it makes sense and made me feel better. I had not thought about that. My tyroid results FSH were normal but i know it does not mean much. I don't get much hot flashes so it does not seem to be connected. Anyway, just wanted to thank you for taking the time to answer and bringing us comfort.
I have stopped googling now as it induced always more fear than knowledge to me. Google is really the worse thing you can do when you worry about any symptoms that you don't understand.
take care

I too have had tingling and pain in my left foot, leg and left hand on and off for approx. ten years. I didn't

have any anxiety and was still having my periods then. I used to joke with my family and tell them that I had a "busy signal"

in my right foot because it buzzed in very rhythmic pulses!

I have found relief with the antidepressant Cymbalta (mentioned this because you indicated you were on

an AD) which is also used for neuropathy. Recently, I had to change ADs and my doctor prescribed

Neurontin to replace the Cymbalta. I'm sorry--I know this doesn't speak to the cause, but these meds have really

helped with the pain and discomfort.

I hope you can find relief---

Hi, Maria-- I, too, have been plagued with this tingling/numbness in my hands and feet (mostly hands). I started with it a couple of years ago when I was under a great deal of stress, but then it went away for about a year. Now it is back, but my stress level is much better than it was two years ago, so go figure. I have had no back problems, so that's not the cause of my problem.

I have been afraid to Google this because my mind goes into overdrive wacko.gif . I am 55 and two-and-a-half years post-meno. The only thing I take is calcium supplements with vitamin D. So I don't know what this is all about, but wanted you to know you are not alone. I'm going to keep reading this thread and hoping one of our Power Surge buddies will have more insight. Good luck!

Hey Jan (and all the other poor ladies who replied with this wonderful symptom),
I was wondering why you had to switch off the Cymbalta. I am on lexapro for almost three months and it had gotten a little better although my foot was still tingling at times. Now all of a sudden the last few days it started when I woke up again (burning in both arms) and that caused my anxiety to come back full force. If you dont mind me asking, did you have to switch because it stopped working for you? The worst thing I can imagine is being back when I was a few months ago with bad anxiety attacks from all of this and when my foot/arms tingle and burn it makes me think something is wrong and causes anxiety.

And did they tell you you have to stay on Neurontin indefinutely or will it "cure" the tingling?

Thanks again to everyone who wrote back. This is all so confusing. I keep going back and forth between seeing a gyn and it being a hormone problem and seeing a neurologist with it being a back problem. I just want to stop thinking about it!!!. Take care, Maria

I seem to do pretty well on an antidepressant for about 2 yrs. and then they

run their course and aren't effective any more. You might want to check with your doctor

about the return of the burning/tingling---there are a number of antidepressants, but

Cymbalta seems to be the one that's used for the nerve pain. (For instance,

Effexor seems to stop hot flashes for many women).

No, Neurontin doesn't "cure" the nerve pain, but makes it much more comfortable

while you seek answers about what the cause is.

I hope and wish that you can find both relief and an answer soon...

Thanks again guys,

Leanne, You mentioned I could post the results of my hormone bloodwork on here. Where would I go about doing that? I would love to get some insight. I am taking this antidepressant which was helping for a few weeks, but now that I got my peiod, my symptoms came back full force. So I cant help but to think its related to my cycle/hormones. I asked my gyn if he thought bcp would help, and he said they couldnt hurt. Does anyone have any experience with that? I am back in full force anxiety attacks and its really getting me down (youre not supposed to be down on an ad .lol). Thansk again, maria
