Has anyone ever had a bad sore throat after surgery from the tube in your throat from the anesthesia? I had a hysteroscopy and D&C yesterday. I had a endometrial polyp removed. The surgery went fine, but when I returned to the recovery room and woke up from the anesthesia, I had a horrible sore throat. I had drainage and scratchy throat. I thought how in the world did I get a sinus infection so quick from the time I went in to surgery and out? That is what it felt like. The nurse told me it was most likely from the tube in my throat during surgery. It still hurts today! I have been drinking tea with honey and lemon and taking throat lozenges. I don't have a fever or chills.....just a sore throat and some hoarseness. Has anyone else ever had this? Is this normal after surgery? I'm calling the doctor tomorrow if it isn't better.

I don't know if I would call it "normal" more like "unfortunate"! I think you will be fine in a few days. I had the worse sore throat of my life after general anesthesia year's ago. My husband (RN) told me that some patient's bodies reject the intubation tube more than others, and the throat is traumatized during the insertion. (it could be worse: my uvula was swollen and hanging down on tongue for a few days...awful sensation! ohmy.gif )

I'm glad that your surgery went fine! Take care.

Yes! It's quite common. Sounds like you had an impatient anesthesiologist. My girlfriend had shoulder surgery last week, and her sore throat is just now feeling better. (((kat))) hang in there. Keep with the lonzenges and whatever you do, don't scream!! tongue.gif

Thank you for replies!!! My gyn was very good, and I do not have any cramps or pain at all from the surgery....just some light spotting. He gave my husband some pictures from the hysterscopy to show what the polyp and D&C looked like before the surgery and after. Very interesting to see. But my throat is a whole different story. I had no idea that I would get a sore throat that bad after surgery. I haven't had any kind of surgery to where I needed anesthesia in 30 plus years. The muscles in my neck and jaw are both sore too. If I didn't know better, I would have thought I had throat surgery instead of having surgery on my girl parts. wink.gif
