Full Version: Brain Cancer and Cell phone use?

Sitting in front of my TV this morning enjoying my coffee, I hear the reporter talk about the higher risk of brain cancer with cell phone use. After 10 years the risk doubles. I have been using my cell phone regularly for 14 years and have always wondered about this. In the last couple of years I have had some severe cognitive problems and memory/verbal slips and brushed it off with menopause brain. Now, here I am sitting at my computer having a panic attack because maybe there is more than menobrain going on in my head. I had a CT scan about 18 months ago that didn't show anything relevant but that was then. I am always feeling off balance, forgetful, can't think straight at times, and as I said in a prior post, I feel like I have dull brain. I am so scattered and disorganised and unmotivated that I am now scaring the pants off myself today. Does anyone else feel like they are walking around with brain damage these days....... Any thoughts here ladies.

I feel this way alot of the time and just attributed it to meno. I do not talk on my cell phone alot but have heard about this the cell phones causing cancer. I have to tell you though that this is not the first time I have heard this. I do not know anyone who has had cancer from the phones but this theory has been around for many years.

It would be interesting to see if it is true or not. I would think that you would have to use your phone a heck of a lot to do any damage. I just dont know.

Hope that your panic is over. Big hugs,
Jeaninne

Lizard....I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope he's okay and the meds take care of this. It's so hard to know where things come from these days. I'm wondering if getting a bluetooth would be wise for everyone. I wonder if they have also done any testing with those as well to see if it makes a difference.

My dear Debra
Like Jeanine said I think the jury is out on this one but I also keep cell use to minimum.
As for the scattered and disorganised feelings believe you me I still get plenty of those!Hormones are responsible for lots of our moods etc. so try not to worry too much about this. Also I used to be one of those naturally good spellers -that all the other kids in School hated!-as knew almost instinctively how to spell even the most difficult word! Now?I spend lots of time substituting with easier words as Spelling has gone out of the window.
So please 'little worry wort' relax and know we are all in this together!
And yes I am as 'brain damaged as it gets!Honestly.
God Bless
Elizabeth
P.S. If you shone a torch through my ear,you would find the light shining clearly out the other as there is nothing in between!

To be safe, it's good to use a bluetooth headset or earbuds if you are going to talk on the cell for a long period of time. I just talk for brief periods when I am on the go, but I know that some people are using the cell as their primary phone and getting rid of landlines. There is nothing proven about cell phone use and cancer, but it's pretty easy to just start using a headset if you are going to be using the cell phone a lot.

Hi Jeaninne, Again, thanks for the voice of reason. So many of us here are going through the memory stuff that it's hard to pinpoint anything anymore. I can't even figure out which hormones I need at this point. I guess there is no point in going overboard (as my usual response) to this new info. What will it be next week, the heated seats in my car cause butt cancer? Hugs to you......Debra

DebraD,

Poor thing. I have been squarely situated in your shoes.

When I first started having my peri symptoms, I had nooooooooooo idea peri could be like this. Because I'd lived on the planet for 44 years, I'd gotten good at figuring out cause and effect. You know, what was causing what in my life.

In the case of peri, however, we are so embarrassingly uninformed about what it is that I couldn't have possibly deduced that peri was causing the symptoms. Because I didn't know that it could.

Sooooo, I started grasping at everything else. I was absolutely convinced I had hyperthyroidism--to the point of taking out a stack of books on the subject from the library to learn about the disease I had. (And to the point of storming into the E.R. and demanding they test me for it.)

Repeat this story about 15 times with different diseases and there you have my story.

I've only very recently begun to accept that all of this s*** is peri.

I doubt that cell phone usage is healthy for us. But I have one and use it. I recently bumped my minutes down to the minimum and took a land line plan with unlimited usage so that I would be spending less time on the cell (both for health and $ reasons).

But I suspect your symptoms are peri related. If you're going to worry, then get checked out.

But I saw so much of myself in your post. And I've been checked out--thoroughly. My only diagnosis is anxiety and depression. There is something about the anxiety that comes with peri that makes us really suseptiple to hypochondria.

Once I finally accepted that (the health anxiety as just another lovely peri symptom), it made it easier to deal with it.

But it's a constant monitoring sort of thing, e.g. in the middle of the night I actually thought, "OMG. My crown (tooth) is getting infected. It's going to become infected and go into my eye and I'll go blind."

This is a day in the life of peri!

Peace to you,

Sukie

my sons constantly use their cell phones .. but never to talk to anyone .. they are texting constantly ,, I worry about premature carpel tunnel the way they use their thumbs on video game controllers and the cell phone..

Sukie - LOL!! I loved your comment about infected crown and somehow going blind!! laugh.gif Thanks, I have been there so many times, I can't count, but your remark cracked me up!!

As far as cell phones, I think less is more. I used to work for a company that sold cell phones before they were popular, remember when they were installed in cars??!! That's when I worked for them, and there was talk then...

Take Care,

Sunny~

OK sukie .. I just had to add ,, when I read this "OMG. My crown (tooth) is getting infected. It's going to become infected and go into my eye and I'll go blind."

I just laughed out loud at my desk .. OMG ,, that was so me a year or so ago .. that is hysterical .. yes I was going to die of something different every day !!

You could not PAY me to have a cell phone!!! I simply can not believe that all these 12 year olds walking around with a phone to their ear 10 hours a day are not doing harm. Cell phones have not been around long enough to give us a "what will it lead to" in thirty years! The texting? Seriously screwing up the hands of our future generation! I see carpel tunnel, arthritis and back problems...just from cell phones!!! What I want to know is WHY in the world does a 12 YEAR OLD need a bloody cell phone for in the first place!!!??? We all survived with landlines and managed to call home JUST FINE!

I LMAO over this comment as well.
Now my face does hurt where I had my tooth pulled yesterday but it was worth it!!!!!

So glad I could make you all chuckle; I was aiming for that.

(Never mind that it was a true story and that I really did have a fleeting bout of anxiety at 3 a.m. last night over the crown that would inevitably blind me. I'm getting much better at intervening on my own behalf with the hypochondria, though. I guess I'm a veteran. After a year of every disease in the book, there is a little voice of reason that will meekly suggest to my freaked-out half, "Sukie. PERIMENOPAUSE. Ring a bell?")

This is an interesting topic! I frequently watch some of the weekend news medical shows and this topic came up on one of them this past Sunday. A long and detailed study has just been completed in another country --- sorry, can't remember which, think it might have been Japan --- where cell phone usage is very high. According to the study, constant cell phone usage by children up until the age of 10 can greatly increase the risk of medical problems (ie brain cancer/tumors), as the bones surrounding the brain have not fully formed and are much thinner than those in adults. Apparantly this is borne out by an increase in certain types of cancer/tumors in younger people. I wasn't aware that radiation is actually released by some components of cell phones! This news piece said it isn't a hight dosage, but its still radiation. Scans of the brain were actually shown that indicated how much further the radiation gets into young brains. Some in the medical community said that this might not be a problem with people who've taken up use of the cell phone as adults, but that so many young kids are already "hooked" on them, that it will be a real health problem to keep an eye on in the future.
