Hey ladies,

I am soooooooooo upset--maybe I shouldn't be but I was just reading the insert that came with my Estrogel and it said that ESTROGEL IS A SYNTHETIC ESTROGEN MADE FROM A PLANT SOURCE. Okay, I am confused......that sounds contradictory to me. If it is made from a plant source then how is it synthetic--since plant sources are natural. Does't bioidential mean that it is not synthetic. HELP....................SO CONFUSING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
One more question.........how much is too much estrogel. I am taking 1/2 of push of the pump of Estrogel with the understanding that I am getting .37 mg. of estradiol--a full push delivering .75 mg. What is the lowest amount of estradiol that works for some women and what is the highest amount that some women take. Just curious.

I just want to try and answer your question about the confusion related to the Estrogel being a synthetic estrogen --- I'm not entirely sure about this BUT a bio-identical hormone does not mean that it is 100 per cent natural because it needs to be made in the laboratory.... your Estrogen is from a plant source (which is natural) but it is synthesised in the lab... thats what they mean by synthetic.....it's not 100 per cent natural in that case..... thats what I take it to mean---- hope others can throw some light.... smile.gif

Hey there,

I am doing just fine on 1/2 pump of Estrogel. I could probably do just as well with a full 1/2 pump, but I've always only wanted to use as much product as necessary to eliminate my symptoms (which are not as bad now that I am post). It seems that for me, the further away I get from my 1 year mark of no periods, the less E I need. At least that's the way it's going for me at this moment. That could change overnight, I'm sure......;-)
About the Estrogel itself, I understand that it is made from a plant source.

EP is correct. The bio identical stuff is synthesized from yams into a substance that closely resembles an oestrogen. Those who make their living from selling it would love you to believe that it is totally natural and all you are doing is replacing your missing estrogen with an identical substance. Sadly that is a myth and all types carry about the same risk. In fact because the bio identicals have not been subjected to rigorous testing there may be some hidden problems with them that no one really knows about yet. I think that the BHRT is more ethical because it does not contain anything that has passed through a pregnant mare. However, the synthetics do seem to 'do the job' with less hassle that the bio identicals which appear to be very hit and miss. This all remains a very grey area and it is important that everyone choosing to take the BHRT is fully aware of all the facts and is not seeing only 'half the picture.'

Well, the only "natural" estrogen is conjugated equine estrogen, aka Premarin wink.gif
The rest of hormones are made in the lab from phytoestrogens and hormones like substances containing plants: soy for estrogen and wild yam for progesterone to make it simple.
They marketed as "natural" because of identical chemical formula to human hormones, not because it is conjugated from pregnant women's urine, LOL.
There is no identical hormones expect endogenous human hormones made my our own body, everything else on the market is either close hormone like chemicals, made from plants in the lab or conjugated from pregnant mare urine.
If u ask me, we are much close to horses than to soy, at least, we both are mammals. wink.gif
Since our body can't utilize plant estrogen and progesterone in its row form, or at least, does not have enzymes to break it, pharmacetical companies figured a way to synthesize it becomes replica of endogenous hormones.
The confusing word is synthetic, but it just means it is made via chemical processing.

hi ladies,

thanks so much to all who responded regarding the Estrogel being synthezied in the lab. Thanks for clearing up some of the confusion. I guess I was really naive--thinking that I was getting my estrogen in a pure and natural state straight from plants without all the necessary tweaking. Oh well--one more thing I have learned. Anyhow-who knows what is the best way to get our estrogen?

If u want your phytoestrogen, here is the list of plants and food that contains some, it is the healthest way to "eat" your estrogen. Now, it does not mean that plant estrogen or phytoestrogen will turn into pure esstradiol in your body, hence, pharma purifies the phytoestrogens to make it more potent and useful. Tweaking does not mean necessarily it is bad product, the chemical formula makes the difference.
If you want plant estrogen, it comes in herbal supplements as Red Clover, Black cohosh, wild yam, etc. and soy products, milk, tofu, it is very individual how one's body will react to any hormone or suppelement, so u need to try it.
Here is the some information that can be useful:
