Hello

I am new to the board although I have been reading it for weeks! I am 41 and I think I must be peri-menopausal. I have also suffered big time with heavy bleeding and blood clots. This has been happening for around 2 years, with the last 8 or 9 months getting worse. So i finally plucked up courage to see the doctor who originally prescribed me some transemic acid pills (I live in the UK).

these worked to a certain degree but i was still getting big clots and flooding both the most absorbant tampons and 2 pads on the worse days. Periods are now lasting 14 days on average, with the worse being 28 days (!) and this one then having the next period 3 days later...great ! Well I went back to the doctor after having a bad loss of blood (8/9 largish clots) at one time. He then sent me for an ultrasound. This revealed a number of fibroids, the largest being 3cm, what he considered to be a polyp (again some 3cm by 3.7cm and another number which i can't remember now...ie fairly large so they said) and a cyst on my right ovary, again some 3cm big.

Well yesterday i had an op in the hospital..general anaesthetic ...D & C and removal of the polyp & hysteroscopy. Specialist says he is going to leave fibroids alone. So when i came around, a doctor came and told me op went okay, but the polyp is not a polyp, says sometimes it can appear to be a polyp on the ultrasound...she says it was the fact I have a large womb and quite thick lining. So what is this "polyp", a build up of the lining in one place??? They have sent a sample off to be tested and as far as i can tell (so my husband says also) they didn't actually remove the "polyp". Is is possible this is another fibroid ? The doctor said that the results will be sent to me and my GP so we can discuss further treatment as she said the further two options of balloon abalation and/or mirena coil may not be suitable for me and they may not be able to treat any more heavy bleeding...i have to see my GP about possibly being diabetic and I am overweight (although having now had wake-up call I am going to lose the excess weight). I am aware the mirena coil has progesterone (??) in it and i have read something about uncontrolled diabetes meaning its unsuitable. I am also going to make appt to get that element sorted asap. I don't know why the balloon option would be unsuitable? Is this because I am overweight or because I don't have any children? Or was the doctor hinting that the only option would be a hysterectomy? It was all quite confusing because she was foreign, and I couldn't quite get what she was trying to say to me (plus still a bit woozy at the time) ohmy.gif(

Sorry for the long ramble but thanks for reading.

First off !!!!

I would wait and see if the D&C helps the bleeding. I had one and a polyp removed 2 yrs ago and so far everything has been back to normal! The D&C shall take care of the thick lining etc. Hugs!

Thanks for your response Snowmoon!

Well today I received my results from the hospital and it seems that it was definitely a polyp that they removed. Everything is okay and there is nothing to worry about regarding the polyp - it was benign. Thank goodness!

I have since however had a "period". I was due one week after the D&C and its been pretty heavy with a few clots. I have been keeping an open mind about it and will see how it goes for 2/3 months. If no better, I will go back to my GP. At any rate I am going to get some more transemic acid pills on repeat prescription because they do help.
