Hi ladies, I've been thinking about posting this lately just to see what the rest of you think. I have a BIG pet peeve! I can't stand the way people have "ruined" perfectly good names. What are young parents thinking? Especially in the last decade, chosing a baby name has become a contest to see just how many ways you can spell the "original" name. It drives me crazy!
Here are some prime examples;
Robin------Robyn
Zachary------Zackary
Daniel-------Danyl
Autum-------Ahtum
Mary-------Marey
Grace-------Grayce
Megan-------Maegan
Michael-------Mykal
Nicholas------Nikkolas
Erica-------Eryka
Jasmine-------Jazzmyne
Anyone want to add some more to the list?

Working in a school I see all sorts of names spelled differently.
I've seen Megan--Meghan--Meagan--Meaghan
Patty--Patti
Jessie--Jesse
Jamie--Jaime
Nicholas--Nicolas
Kristina--Christina
Cindy--Cyndi
........ and so on and so on and so on. It doesn't really bother me as long as they remember to put their names on their papers before they turn them in (lol). I think what bothers me more is when people name their children things like Dallas or Dakota. Aren't those places---not names?

It doesn't bother me at all.....i think it's just a way to be different and/or update old names....
It can get confusing though when trying to send birthday/holiday cards and such....
here's some i've seen: aleesha,alicia....shauna,shawna.....madelyn,madeline.....charlie,charleigh....br
itney,brittney,brittini,brittiney....BriAnna,BreAnna....

HERE, HERE!!! .. LOL! I agree..i can't stand all these "new" names! and yes, Dakota IS a place, not a name! geez!
i'm all for non-conventional things, i am VERY unconventional .... but, this is so ridiculous, it's so OBVIOUS that they want to be noticed , or "different" .... please............think about what the child will live with!

I do have to admit that some names just make you go "WTF"...like hearing that Courtney Cox named her daughter Coco...or Gwyneth Paltrow named hers Apple...or Jason Lee named his son Pilot Inspektor....so changing the spelling of Cindy to Cyndi is no big deal compared to Diva Muffin(Frank Zappa's daughter) or Moxie Crimefighter(Penn Jillette's daughter....(of Penn & Teller)).....or the couple in New Jersey that named their son Adolf Hitler.....which,by the way,the child was taken away from the parents....do you think we should be able to name our children whatever we want or do you think it's right that social servies removed the kid from the home?

Certain ones I find a bit ridiculous. Mostly the celebs that name their kids odd names.

If I could expand on the names that drive me nuts. It kills me when people insist you pronounce their names a certain way. Like Sonya must be pronounce Suuunya instead of Sooonya. Or Katlyn must be pronounced like Cat instead of Kate, or the other day this mexican fellow introduced himself as Artamio and after several tries at his insistance when I couldn't roll my 'rrrrr's' like him and I called him Art, and he said, no! it's Arrrrrtamio!. People call me Anj and Angie all the time, and even say it with accents. I don't mind.

Today was my first day of school. I had a boy in one of my classes named Dayvd. He pronounces it just like David. Go figure.

As a school employee, we come across some bizarre name spellings. For some reason, the female version of Michael has run rampant in our 4-6 building and every one is spelled differently: MaKayla, Michaela, Micayla, Michaelina...
And the unisex names: Jordan, Ryan, Hunter, Dakota, Morgan...hmmmm...been all summer, I know there are more....
I have to help the secretary with the incoming classes to determine if it's a boy or girl every year....
In my day, it was Mary, John, David, Susan, Kathy, Thomas, Barbara, Robert, etc....no one asked "Is that a boy or a girl..."

Hello
It is going to be very difficult for anyone to trace their family tree in the future I think.. if all this different spelling of names goes on. It's bad enough trying to trace ancestors now, what with misspelt surnames etc, but now so many versions of first name spellings will be a nightmare....

In my other post i mentioned the couple that had their child removed from their home for naming him Adolf Hitler.....what do you guys think about that?Do you think we should have the right to name our kids anything we choose or do you agree that the child should have been taken away?I personally think it's our right and if we wanna name our kid "DVD Player" or even "dog poop" we should be able to without social services stepping in...(not meaning it's OK to name a kid dog poop)

I think the PARENTS should have been taken away! I do believe we should have the right to name our kids whatever we want but there has to be a line if names like that start coming up. It's cruel to the child and to all of the people who remember.

I agree sudio....there needs to be some kind of line...but i also don't think a child should be taken away because of a name...

That's a tough one. You should be able to name your kid what you want, but my question is why are people so stupid? Why name your kid Adolf or Dweezil or Scout just because you can? Use some sense people. Think about how your kid will be picked on and teased. Anybody who would do that to their kid was never teased in school. If they were, they would understand. A friend of mine is a foster parent, and has spent a lot of time with Child Protective Services in Houston. She said you can't believe what some of these crack mothers name their children. One little girl's name was Vagina. I kid you not.
My name is Cindy. Born in 1960, so it's spelled traditionally (no, I'm not a Cynthia, but yes I'm a Cindy Lu). These days people have to ask me "how do you spell that?" I get Cyndi, Cindi, even Sindee.
Something else I don't like -- and I know I'm in the minority here -- is naming children after yourselves. It's bad enough to name a son Joe Bob JR., but when a woman names her daughter after her, there's no way to distinguish it. I know a woman named Elizabeth -- goes by Liz -- who named her daughter the same. Now it's Miss Liz and Little Liz, although Little Liz is 34 now. Let your kid have some individuality, although, as noted above, not TOO much. You want them to be unique, not a freak.
And I can't TELL you how much I hate non-gender specific names. A good friend of mine named her kids Jamey Lynn and Jordan Rae. Quick -- boys or girls? They are both girls. I know a lot of women give their daughters names like that so they can better compete in the "male-dominated" business world. I call BS on that. That's a very condescending attitude. If a woman is confident and intelligent and talented and determined, she'll succeed regardless of her name. Who are some of the more successful women in history? Queen Elizabeth, Sarah Bernhardt, Susan B. Anthony, Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinam, -- not a boy name in the bunch.
