I have never posted before but after reading this forum for the past few years thought I would. I can only assume what I've been going through for the past 6 years or so is Peri. I'm almost 49, still having periods regularly, however for the fist time this last one was 2 weeks late. I have experienced a lot of the symptoms, racing heart, anxiety, loss of libido, indigestion, weight gain etc etc. I've been to a few Dr's for it but all they tell me is that I'm depressed and offer AD's, I tell them I'm not depressed but once actually took them for a while and all it did was make me eat and drink more, adding to the weight problem!! One Dr did prescribe Xanax but only once - it helped so much, I only took 1/2 pill occassionally when my shoulders were so tense or I couldn't sleep, Dr won't prescribe it again, just says to see a psychiatrist. I suppose I don't really have a question, just felt the need to say something. I can only assume (or hope) that what I've been putting up with over the years is Peri and that at age 49 I shouldn't have too much longer to go or maybe I should just visit every Dr in Australia until I fing one that'll give me xanax again!

Suzy,

It sure sounds like peri to me! Welcome to the "sisterhood", and post often because this is a great site!
About the Xanax...I've never taken it for not being able to sleep for tense muscles, but I do take it when my anxiety is really bad. I only take half a pill and it helps so much. If your doctor won't work with you, maybe you should find someone who will.

Take care and God bless,
Deb

Thanks Deb

Yes need to find a proper DR - it really did help relax the muscles and with .5 of a pill was asleep for the whole 8 hrs.

I'm pretty lucky (I'm in USA) but my psyche Dr. will prescribe Xanax to me no problem. I never call and ask him for more before I should. He trusts that I won't become an addict. I am a little chubby so I need a bit more sometimes but usually .5 will work and on occasion I will take .5 and 1/2 of .5 depending on the level of anxiety. It really was a life saver for me. Reg. Dr's tend to fear Xanax. I realize it has high addictive potential, however, unless your patient has exhibited those tendencies to you, or the Dr. knows you are a recovering addict, they should trust their patient until they get a feeling he or she shouldn't. Psyche Dr's don't seem to quite as afraid of Xanas. I could be wrong I've only been to one, lol. I just know that my regular Dr.s kept pointing out to me how addictive it was even though I was telling them it was the only thing really giving me peace. Why make a medication that the medical community is too afraid to use? Mine must have told me that 4 times, I was pissed. I emailed her and basically said "have I given you any reason whatsoever to indicate I am an addict of any kind, because I am finding it rather condescending and offensive that you keep going there"... There were a few back and forth emails, I divorced her if you will....

I'm suprised to hear anyone would have a hard time getting a dr. to write a prescription for xanax.....it seems to be the drug of choice in my town.....so you can go in with an ingrown toenail and leave with a script for it....
